What I think should be done with your kids is either give them a fixed, small budget(5-6 grand) for their first car and allow them to do their own research or match whatever money they put in for a first car. This obviously involves some level of self sufficiency and good communication, but it makes sure the kids have respect for the vehicle and they’ve done their research about the car itself. Just offer them a bit of guidance like they have to get a pre purchase inspection by a mechanic and they have to look up online the common mechanical issues before they buy a car.

Rebuilt trans for that car should be around $4k installed. If the dealer quoted $9k, that was probably for replacement with a new transmission. At any rate, if you decide to pay $9k, make SURE you're getting a "factory new" transmission. Fancy sports cars, especially those with a turbo, are usually expensive to maintain. Especially, with a young male driver, (they tend to push it pretty hard).

He should have been driving a 10+ year old car that was purchased for less than $5K. But, that particular car model is in fact highly sought after. They can sell it for $15K and wipe the slate clean. The son needs to purchase his own used car after he gets his license back and take care of himself. The veloster comes with a 100K powertrain warranty. Just sell it, might even make money and then let him take some responsibility. This mom needs to step away for this.

Funny, the first car my dad bought me when I was 20, and in college, was a $500 1976 Vega. I did not ding, crash, or ruin anything on it and drove it many many times across state from University to home 300 miles each way. I eventually got a job after college, and then bought a 1986 Nissan truck, with cash, and gave the vega to my brother's stepson. So to say young people will ding and crash cars is stereotyping teens and young people. Of course this was back in 1988. So maybe I fall into the not normal. 🤷‍♀ I do agree about not co-signing, especially something that expensive. My mom did co-sign something with one of my brothers, I don't believe that worked out well for my mom. Again though that was back in teh 80s, and my brother eventually grow up and made amends with mom. But she learned a lesson for sure.

The bank doesn't give money to anyone as you said. I don't want their money either. If I don't have the money then I don't buy simple as that. It doesn't mean I'm not trustworthy as stated in this video I just rather spend cash and have done so for 14yrs now . According to the banking world I'm not trustworthy but if that's the way they want to be oh well I'll just keep using cash and if that's not good enough then oh well don't need it

It's not that they say you're not trustworrhy, but that they just don't have data to determine if you are.

I'm 35....Paid, and still pay cash for everything....If I don't have the money....I don't buy it...Every vehicle I've ever owned is paid cash money......Never missed rent, or electric, car insurance payments in over 17 years....Does it mean anything.....NO....Co-signing doesn't mean you can't make a payment....just means you don't have a paper trail of evidence for them to evaluate if you're responsible or not.....And yes, God does say not to put yourself in the position this lady is in....✌
