Ironically, the mere concept is a great parody/satire of the whole "Mary Sue/Main Character Syndrome" thing. With an ability that basically mind controls/hypnotizes people into loving and worshipping you like a god, you become the de facto (cult) leader of any party and the center of attention in almost any social situation.

In my opinion, mind control constitutes an attack. In that situation if it doesn't work, we're now in a fight. If the cleric dies, problem solved. If I die, problem solved. If the mind control works, I hand over my sheet as an npc and leave since I'm no longer playing him.

I'm not sure what the cleric was thinking? This doesn't sound fun even from his position. Once I realized that the cleric's spores influenced people I would have pointed out that the use of the spores is a evil act and as a paladin I must oppose their evil for the good of the people. Then started swinging that oh so favored great sword that paladins carry.

Yeah, I kinda wonder where the cleric thought his character's story was going to go. 'You're worshipped by everyone far and wide' seems kinda like an endgame goal not a starting point. Tiefling fighter's backstory and goal might've been basic and not particularly original, but at least it had a path of progress... or at least a potential path of progress.

As IRL so in playing a fictional belief. It is up to the PC to ultimately decide what their faith will be. It must be voluntary. It can be discussed freely, challenged, tested too(IMHO) but No DM should force a PC do that. That is a recipe for disaster. Foolish DM. No wonder his players want to leave.

A different character changed my character's faith once. We were playing in a homebrew world where there were no gods, but one guy wanted to play a Paladin. He convinced the GM to let his character to truly believe in Bahamut, even though he didnt exist. So we are playing with this crazy paladin preaching about this dragon god thing constantly. I finally told him in character that I didn't want to hear this craziness anymore, and I would believe it when I saw it. A few sessions later the GM introduced a huge metalic dragon (set up to be a baddie) and I rolled for intelligence. Got a 1. Joined the Bahamut cult. Lol

That's not a D&D game. The DM doesn't know how to DM. The Cleric player doesn't know how to play. If they're not willing to learn... they don't belong at a D&D table, at all. They ruin the experience for everyone there.

Just a note for when you read these in the future, Luke, but to preserve anonymity, people will often refer to the persons involved by their character class regardless if the drama happens in or out of game. Sounds like a new or weak DM and a toxic, bully of a player (Cleric). It's a hard read, but I think the Cleric player bullied the DM into letting them have this op homebrew bullcrap -one of those "well, if I don't get my way, then I'm not playing" type of situations. I think the DM just wanted to play some D&D. They tried to give the characters some space to cool off with that shopping interlude, probably hoping the Cleric would give up on trying to control the other PCs. At least, that's the impression I'm getting. In any case, OP is definitely NTA.

We've had PVP at the beginning of a campaign which actually went quite well. To be fair, one of the PCs was actually our prisoner starting out and he convinced one of the other very low intelligence PCs to let him out of his cell. As soon as the cell was opened he fled and we spent the next few sessions trying to find/catch him which involved several PVP battles and almost destroyed the ship that was carrying us. When we docked, he fled the ship and led into a high speed chase into the city. It took several more sessions for us to find him and a lot of difficultly figuring out how we would actually end up on a team together after that, but it was still a lot of fun. As a result, I put him down on my character sheet as both an enemy and an ally.

My first character was somewhat similar actually, granted this was about 10 years ago (geez has it been that long?) DM said half orcs in that world were frowned upon more than usual, so naturally I rolled up a half orc fighter that wanted to become a knight, to prove to himself and the world at large that he was worth something, meanwhile struggling with his inner demons (especially the anger that is all too common with orcs), died failing to protect the Queen but was knighted posthumously. I had a lot of fun with that character and would do so again. Not original at all, wasn't trying to be.

I would have warned the cleric that he needed to roll up a character that would act as a team player, that DnD is a team game, and that messing with other players agency is very frowned upon before the first session... Knowing players like this I would have probably still had to kick him sooner rather than later but that character would have never made it to the table Side note this just reminds me of how amazing my DnD group is, we've been playing almost a decade and never had anything remotely like this.

Huh imagine that, a player trying to subvert the agency of other players (who would prob fall over dead if another player tried it on them), and for some reason being supported by a weak willed DM. A tale as old as time. Seriously though, dnd is not a system built for PvP scenarios. Even something so simple as pickpocketing another player can cause “the feels”; and so I don’t allow it. I have a world full of NPCs you can rob til your hearts content (til you get caught at least). While many players in my experience do not choose to follow any gods (out of RL distaste for religion) or simply choose a god and forget about them, I would never allow anyone to subvert deep seated beliefs of a fellow player. I do allow in character “challenges” to a PCs belief because that can be great RP. I even study their god as the DM to present “challenges of faith”, interesting opportunities for the PC to either strengthen or reconsider their faith; but I force nothing, just merely present in world. I’ve even created a world where gods no longer exist narratively because my players didn’t want anything to do with “that crap” (again RL views entering into the game world); and that’s fine after everyone agreed to it. It was even interesting to create a setting that has no view on the after life, a purpose to life, or even an overarching moral “code”. So, while I think gods and such in a dnd setting are really freaking awesome; the trend lately has been to remove/ignore them, at least in my own micro-sample experiences lol. /shrug

Truth. DnD is meant to be a group working together which falls apart if each player isn't able to let their guard down to the group since they are competing for treasure/power/magic etc Once they start stealing or attempting to end/control other unwilling PC's at moments that one or more players are severely weakened it all implodes and nothing is accomplished. You'll see conspiring or just right out abandoning party members in times of need, some players will start maxing all builds (if they aren't already) and/or getting creative with grammar gymnastics or loose spell definitions to use spells like Control Water to effect another PC's blood somehow or conjure a Mage Hand inside another PC's mouth to try to suffocate them. Ive seen people argue that they can summon one on a targets heart to stop it pumping since it is summoned at a point you choose. Most TTRPGs aren't meant to be played competitively against other players.

So cleric has what seems to be an at will (command, geas, charm person etc-but not really just worship me and do what I say without question) spell like ability, which seems like he was not very effective at (but being at will does it matter). No one would be excited to be subject to this ability unwillingly even with the so call bonuses/benefits. Maybe a couple players at a session 0 could maybe play some kind of very watered down version together if they want. Definitely no forever worshipers, and probably with increasing hostility when ever the cleric does his "thing" (eg. how the Friends or Charm spells work and when the duration runs out). One last thought too is if the cleric wanted to control multiple characters why not just play with just the DM instead of pretending the other players had any real control of their PC's. The clerics play for control over other PCs and to be worshiped not just by NPCs but by the PCs too sounds like a deeper psychological problem/red flag that probably should be addressed.

Went through the phase where they just like to make characters and roleplay with each other and NPCs, not so much kill monsters. Now thyre a regular part of my group. But i digress. Point is, they were better than this at 5 and 3. Ironically, when my okdest was 14 the worst she did was mess with an NPC and get not only reined in by the NPC turning her into a newt (she got better), but also my buddy and veteran ganer let her know in no uncrrtain terms we dont mess with ither party members, and your Dad isnt running a game where he ecoects you to murder hobo. You have to be the referee between the world and the players. And if your cleric says he casts some shit with spores I'll just would respond he has to shut up because he's not a druid. There is not even one god in the pantheons of DnD you could have a spell from which is based on nature. At least not on plants and trees to be precisely. So there can't be any spores at all! Only if your Charakter ia a mykonide or something, which is not the case here.. so not the roleplay itself is an absolute shit show, also all the technical rules are non existent on this situation.
