Air and water vapor are not the same thing. Breathability means WATER VAPOR can pass through the material. Air passing through just shows that the material is not wind proof. Any material that truly blocks out the elements will not bubble.

A lot of the people here clearly failed grade school physics, bought into the marketing hype and believe air permeability and breathability is completely separate concept. If air doesn't pass through, water vapor wont either!!!! Was that not obvious?!?!?!

Water molecules are larger than air molecules, so im failing to see how these other materials are "breathable" and help "moisture escape from your body" if air molecules are unable to pass through them...

I have tried both eVent and Gore-Tex (including the new Gore-Tex Pro) the difference in breathability is so minor that of you didn’t know which jacket you were using you couldn’t guess. I will say eVent is not windproof, using a thin baselayer in windy cold temps I got colder much faster in the eVent jacket. As far as waterproof goes, they both are top notch. Both are great in my opinion.

GORE-TEX has a half dozen scientific labs spread over the east coast staffed with textile scientists, constantly testing, creating, and developing new technologies for use under the GORE-TEX brand (which I've visited)... but that's probably all just for show. You're right, they probably still use the exact same tech they did in 1976. Calling GORE-TEX old just because the brand has existed longer than the brands you mention means what? It means they've had DECADES to make their product better.

eVent is what Castelli use for their pocket liner jacket that all the pro's wear even if they are not supposed to....

While you may be right in that they aren't the same I think that the fabric has two sides, each with different properties. I may be wrong though.

I believe this is an air pump like those used in aquariums. I have recently been considering the breathable membranes at www.roofingmegastore.co.uk/roofing-categories/pitched-roofing/extras/membranes.html, which will be used beneath plastic roof tiles. I would love to see these tests performed on those membranes, as it demonstrates their value wonderfully.

He has just used an air pump from an aquarium, then some simple plastic tubing.

Didn't realize Gore-Tex had fanboys. I'm going to miss eVent when Gore puts them out of business through dirty business practices and cutthroat, "Us or them" bully licensing.

Awww Scott----That is exactly the point!! Air perm and breathability are indeed COMPLETELY different things......... That is why the newer and innovative fabrics such as eVent, and NeoShell are shaking up the "Old" institutions such as Gore. Do your homework buddy......

Gore tex is BS for a hot and humid city which I stay. But I still can't buy E vent bec no one makes jacket out of it.

Stop misleading people EVENT. Air permeability and breathability are COMPLETELY different things. All this proves is that your product is not windproof.

It is the tiles which will primarily protect from the wind. The membrane simply allows air to escape the roof space and not allow water in. Having considered the breathable membranes at www.roofingmegastore.co.uk/roofing-categories/pitched-roofing/extras/membranes.html, I now want to run these tests myself :)
