Skyscrapers today are controversial - especially in New York - but globally they are getting taller and more numerous. This evening features two authors, an economist and a real estate reporter, discussing their recent books on supertall skyscrapers. The program, which is organized by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), New York Chapter, will be moderated by Peyman Askari, founding principal of PAN Partners and the CTBUH New York Chapter Executive/Co-Chair.
Jason M. Barr, a professor of economics at Rutgers University-Newark, will outline his new book Cities in the Sky: The Quest to Build the World's Tallest Skyscrapers (Scribner Books, 2024). Barr will compare cities with ascending skylines to see what motivates their architectural ambitions.
Katherine Clarke, a writer on residential real estate for numerous publications, including The Real Deal and The Wall Street Journal will recap her recent book Billionaires' Row: Tycoons, High Rollers, and the Epic Race to Build the World's Most Exclusive Skyscrapers (Crown Currency, 2023). Clarke focuses on the real-estate impresarios behind the super-slender supertalls of 57th St. and Central Park South.

Excellent discussion. Im an architect from Puebla city in México It's interesting to hear different perspectives and opinions from experts on the subject. I share opinions from both sides. While it's true that speculation within the financial market plays an important role, where some lose and others win, it's also true that skyscrapers provide a good solution for the best use of terrestrial space. With various technological advances, verticality can function, as JASON M. BARR clearly comments, as completely safe and functional cities in the sky. I would like to mention that thanks to the use of nanomaterials, we will soon see significant advances in the energy efficiency and durability of buildings. Moreover, with the correct application of nanomaterials in the different construction processes, we will undoubtedly achieve important results in height and greater usable space, which will be crucial for the proper development of future cities. Additionally, nanomaterials such as graphene derivatives are environmentally friendly. Thank you very much for such an interesting presentation. Best regards from Mexico.
