I'm old school and I just don't like digital copies of my Dungeons and Dragons books, so I print the ones that I am able to. I do see the value in digital versions, they are mega nice when searching for something super specific, but when I want to do some general reading, I just like a physical copy.
I've been asked a couple of times to show how I print them, and that is the focus of today's video (plus it's always fun to show off what my Ricoh Pro 7210x can do).
Fizban's Vault of Draconic Secrets is by Splinterverse and can be found here:

I've been doing some of this lately with my home printer. The quality isn't as good, but I don't care, it is good enough for me and what I need. I have been printing them on standard letter paper, then trimming the excess. They are small little booklets, but my eyes are fine. Others might find them harder to read. I am excited to actually use some of the OD&D modules with Basic Fantasy RPG, and all of my booklets are printed with a similar technique. I use a free piece of software on Linux to create the booklets so I can verify everything should print out correctly first, then I send it through the printer with the correct duplexing. I print the cover on a lighter cardstock to give it a bit of rigidity, and it also helps give the cover a nice flick when you thumb through it. Finally, I bought a rotatable stapler on Amazon to do the center stapling, and it is pretty handy. I like that its not a long stapler and functions as a normal stapler, then rotates to a 90 degree position for booklets. Thanks for the video and happy printing!

what you are doing is exactly how it works with a larger printer too, well, you saw the video. I love working with printing, so many neat and creative things to do with them.

this system is pretty good, but this Ricoh printer is kinda like Sonic (they have 1,063,953 drink combinations); likewise this printer has menus with sub-menus that have settings with sub-settings; once you calculate in the various paper sizes, temperature settings, paper-feed settings, it's gotta have over a couple million combinations. Thankfully, I use about 30 combinations of settings in any given day, with Duplex Left and Duplex Right being the most common.

Nice video! I have a question as I don't know anything about paper, but do you have any idea what type of paper the old 1e D&D manuals used? For instance, the 1e Deities and Demigods manual, what type of paper was that printed on? I love that paper as it is so much easier on my eyes to view and read, it looks nice too. I am not fond of DTRPG's printing as it comes way too glossy and shiny which strains my eyes when the light hits it while reading.

Most of 1e and 2nd ed used a 70# text weight matte Most of the "books" from 1st edition white box were hand typed on a typewriter then photocopied onto 20# copy paper with an 80# cover stock. I've got 1 book from DriveThru and it feels like 70# text weight, some of it has a gloss finish which is what would make it shiny. I'm not a fan of this as it's heavier, I too much prefer the 70# matte.

@@gamemasters Much appreciated. I have been combing the net trying to find out and haven't found anyone talking about it until you talked about your occupation at a printing shop! Thanks again. One last question: What would the paper be considered? Bright White? Even though the manuals I own are older and the white fades to that aged look, is it bright white or another type? I am just trying to replicate the paper in those old manuals to print up some pieces of those books for my personal use. I use an older HP laser printer that will do just fine for me, just need some decent matte paper.

ROFL if you can find a Ricoh 7210x for $500 USD you should buy multiples! What you saw was likely the cost of just one toner bottle (this puppy has 5 - CMYK + a swapable clear, IR, neon yellow, neon green, neon orange, and white). They retail between about $150,000.00 and $500,000.00 usd depending on various finishing options.

I'm curious, if I wanted to say get some PDFs, I've purchased, printed from a third party for my own personal use, do I still need to get permission from the original publisher? And if so, how, would a simple email asking if I may, be good enough?
@gamemasters
@gamemasters 2 ай бұрын
generally, if you are printing them out at home, that's personal use. If, however, you want a more professional binding and seek the services of a commercial printer (or a print on demand company) then yes, you'll want to contact the publisher. Usually an email works perfectly to contact them, I've done this MANY times.

Sorry to be so direct - Cost per copy? I used to work for Canon, so I could do ALL of it for free!!!!! But out here in the real world..... the cost hurts! And yes, when I was at Canon.... I printed LOTS..... hehehhe. Don't get me wrong - i'd buy them.... if they were fairly priced. £20-30.... ok. over? I'll print my own - important pages only.
@gamemasters
@gamemasters 2 ай бұрын
well that's the thing... someone who works with the machines can kindav get away with "free" copies (color calibration, paper test, etc), but not many people DO work with printers so... yeah.. it's cost per copy. I charge: $0.25 per click (defined as 8.5x11) for color plus the cost of paper, so, for example, a sheet of 11x17 80# gloss text has a cost of $0.09 a sheet, add in the per click cost (and we'll be printing this double sided) and that's $1.00, together that is $1.25 per sheet but gives you a yield of 4 pages, so if you have a 200 page book, that would consume 50 11x17 sheets which would be $62.50. That's also a full color from start to finish. Should you decide to print it all in black and white it would be $0.10 per click plus cost of paper so that same 11x17, printed in black and white only, would be $0.49 per sheet, or with a 200 page book (again 50 sheets consumed) would be $24.50. Of course if someone wanted more than 10 copies then there is a price break, is another price break at 50 copies, 100, 250, 500, 1000, 5000. Most pdfs are not going to be that many pages, but that at least gives a rough idea of the cost.
