Whose Turn?

In this video, Whose Turn? reviews the popular game Everdell. This overview focuses on the original release without any expansion content, so if any issues we mention are addressed in future expansions, please let us know.
Overall, we enjoyed Everdell, but it didn't quite hit it out of the park for us. While we respect and enjoy the gameplay, we think there are other games that do what this game does slightly better. One major downside is the limited ability to draw cards from the "Meadow," the face-up section of the board displaying eight different cards. The cards in the Meadow are almost a tease, as you can't draw them until halfway through the game when you can draw only two. While there are some cards that allow you to draw from the Meadow, they are far from common. Additionally, like many card games, you'll notice that some cards are much more powerful than others.
Stick around till the end to hear our ratings and individual thoughts on the game. If you enjoyed the video, please give it a like and consider following us on our journey. Thank you, and enjoy the video.

I agree with your assessment of this game. I wasn’t overly enthusiastic about the game after my first play, but I’ve warmed up to it a little bit each additional play. I also prefer Lords of Waterdeep, Viticulture, or even Terraforming Mars Ares Expedition (not a worker placement but a tableau builder) to this because I feel like there is a ton of variability in the meadow and draw deck for some really powerful combos that can snowball if obtained early on. That combined with the variable set-up and the race to collect achievements aspects make me cool on Everdell. I’ve played a game where all the other players were into their 2nd and 3rd seasons and a player was still taking turns on his first because of the crazy combos he was able to pull and that just feels bad and isn’t something that you can necessarily prevent. Probably an outlier experience but it doesn’t happen in the other games mentioned earlier that follow an even turn structure and are less set-up and draw dependent. You could argue Ares is draw dependent, but I think there is more overlap between cards with a broader deck of cards in that game. Another nice video.

Thank you again for the kind words! While we played it a little incorrect, as you can actually PLAY the cards from the meadow and they are not just there to tease you, it doesn't really change our scores much. We feel that there are much better engine builders out there, better tableau builders, and better resource management ones. We have Lords, Viticulture, and Terraforming on our docket to play and record later this year, so look forward to those! Lords is a classic, and just nailed everything right with only a few flaws. That being said, we've read that the expansions fix some of our gripes with the game, but 100% agree that it's a solid game, but just doesn't hit the mark like it should. Appreciate the input, and hope you enjoy our reviews of those games at a later date! Cheers!

You know you can build/play right from the meadow?

.......WE DO NOW! Swear I read it as you can only DRAW from the draw pile, so the meadow was just a place to show cards you can get with certain actions. This does make the game better as a whole, and much less frustrating, but we would only raise our scores slightly. We still think other games do what this one does but better, and after researching it, it's a very common issue that people have with the game when they first start playing. Either way, thank you very much for pointing this out, and I promise to MAKE SURE that I cover this in the How to Play and Setup for the game. Appreciate the correction!

The shareable spaces are in the rulebook too. It says on page 7 how to tell the shareable vs exclusive worker locations.

We knew about the sharable spaces, as they give resources too when taken. But we just completely missed the meadows part. We plan to try it out this weekend to see how it changes the game, but like I stated we think our scores will only go up slightly. Thank You!

@@WhoseTurn hope you have a good time. It’s a fun and beautiful worker placement game. I do like others better, so it is middle of the road for me.

What other ones do you enjoy more? We fine that Imperial Settlers and Wingspan are better engine builders, Earth is a better Tableau builder, and Lords of WaterDeep is a better resource management game. There are other too, but those are the key ones in our eyes, and we like to know what other people enjoy play too. Have got a few recommendations from people commenting on videos that we're keeping an eye out for lol. Let us know!
