With the increase in climbers, Mount Everest has become more and more threatening over the years. even on the summit. the guide Vinayak Malla summited Everest at 6 am on the morning of May 21, the busiest summit day, with Elite Exped clients. On their way back, they videoed how the snow cornice couldn’t stand the weight of hundreds of climbers and gave in, dragging a number of people into the void.

I am Nepali and I wish my government wouldn't get so greedy and give out permits to everyone and their grandmother. We need to massively curtail the number of climbers allowed each season to preserve the beautiful mountain and prevent incidents like these.

I know it's not your governments fault that people are stupid... but I do agree that they should be much more strict about who they allow to climb Everest .... a person should only be allowed to climb if they have a certain level of experience as a climber & that should be a very strict high level... otherwise they don't get a permit no matter how much money they have to offer...

I'm not a climber but I've always wondered how those snow cornices hold up under all the weight and vibration of hundreds of individuals. I understand it's more ice than snow but it's still hardly what I would consider structurally rated for large groups of people, especially over and over again. I'm surprised this hasn't happened before on Everest. I've heard of climbers falling when cornices collapse on other peaks and whenever I look at those long lines of people, I shiver and not because of how cold it is. While I have no dog in this fight, it would make sense to limit the number of people on the mountain at any given time but, as hurryingman9071 points out, money drives everything.

The garbage I seen on videos on the various camps on mountain was just abhorrent. It was so disgusting. The climbing teams need to be responsible for removing their garbage. If they do not show that their garbage has been removed they need to be fined and have all future privileges revoked. Safety is obviously not a concern with the lineups strung out on the mountain. The climbing community should work either way the government to come to a consensus on a max number of permits each climbing season.

I always hope for no deaths, knowing full well there will be some. I'm obsessed with mountaineering, though I'm disabled and can't climb myself. Still, I don't think I would ever try for any of the highest/most technically difficult peaks. If there's a zero percent chance that nobody will die, that is too dangerous for me. If permits were limited though, and there were no more bottlenecks, and no more people climbing alone/without sherpa, I think most deaths would be avoided.

That's to be expected; you always fall on the way down. How many people fall/die climbing up a flight of stairs? I only know of one, Joe Biden. Not only is it more difficult on the legs coming down, it's also visually more intimidating. On the way up, you're looking straight ahead or up toward the sky. The treacherous nature of the climb is behind and below you, out of sight. On the way down, you're forced to look straight down. The steepness is evident and overwhelming and must be disorientating to unprofessional climbers.

People don't understand the 2 men climbing up the rope as the rest of the climbers stood still looking away, fell off the cornice that collapsed and where about to fall thousands of feet. They actually did lose 2 lives in that incident. We are seeing the 2 who escaped. So yes, this was bad to see but "shocking", no. Clickbaity- Yes! It just hurts to see all those men starring off as 2 men fight for their lives but I also understand the situation. It's just not an area where help can actually help.

How utterly and totally stupid.I cannot think of anything worse than being in that que. As I write this I look out across the Glen from my house and see deserted unclimbed clearly difficult rock faces. No one has ever been near them yet 40 miles away as I write visitors will be queing all the way up and down Ben Nevis!

OK, I've no experience of high altitudes, but the technical level of these climbers is appalling. They should only do some glacier tours on flat ground, not high mountain tours.

Too many ppl climb Everest without realizing without the Sherpas doing all the heavy lifting and supplying oxygen, they ride on the backs of Sherpas. As for the litter problem i find it disgusting, the Nepalese worship those mountains, too many inexperienced climbers and too many ppl caused the latest fatality recently on the Hilary step. It's like looking at a fairground attraction with queues of ppl waiting. Why don't ppl try K2 or Kangchenjunga or Lhotse or Makalu,? They're all the top 5 highest peaks.
