Channel Stickers, Lathe Compound Nut Repair

Another video that should have been out a couple months ago, but better late than never. Got some channel stickers and a small part to make for my buddy's lathe, a compound slide feed nut. We can't get one from Busy Bee Tools (the original supplier of the lathe) so we had to make one. Hopefully this one lasts longer as the original one doesn't even seem to have been bronze but brass.

Thanks Tony! Steve's my buddy with the truck shop where I work when my wife is on maternity leave, so he has regular projects for me. This one was at least not a panic one like most, lol!

Ahh, Good to see you again Everett. I always enjoy watching you. I've been in the Hospital for 3 weeks from a Heart Attack and then double lung Pneumonia but finally home and laying in bed with KZfaq....I need a couple stickers for the old 1970 ish original Kennedy Box....lol.... Ricko

I've done that stay at home Dad thing too and I totally get what you are experiencing. I learned that trick of using the knee to feed grabby tools in brass from Joe Pie. Regards, Preso

Hi Mark! I didn't know Joe showed using the knee for that sort of thing, had I known proper credit would have been given. If it was a common size I would have hit the cutting edge with a stone to make it a bronze/brass only drill, but not doing that to a good quality letter drill, lol. And yes, I do love my kids, it's amazing seeing them grow up before my eyes. Having adult conversation and visits is amazingly balancing though, as you know, lol!

@@EverettsWorkshop Everett, I think Joe favours using the knee when starting end mills on curved surfaces or when they break through a hole off centre. The only thing I don't like about using the knee is the lack of feedback you get when you put the cut on.

I hear you about isolation as a stay at home parent. I moved to Seattle when the kid was 6mo old and the first few years were hard. Luckily, I found a good coworking space where I could go be around adults for a few hours each week.

It is definitely a challenge for me at times. I love my kids immensely, which is why I am home with them (my wife has a more stable, lucrative career) but will admit that even a couple days a week at a day job is beneficial for my mental health. Sounds like you found a good setup too to allow "thinking outside the box" of your home during the day!

Thanks! I am normally right-handed, but definitely don't want to reach over a chuck. Not worth risking life and limb (literally!) for a home hobby project.

I recently did a similar project. I have a Boyer Schultz 6" X 12" surface grinder. So far the only problem I have came across was the Vertical Lift lead screw was worn down so much the treads were almost gone. I restored the nut and lead screw. I did the nut replacement just about the same as you did. So far so good! Good to see you back in the shop. KOKO!

Thanks James! I've seen those Boyer Schultz machines, they are a good size for a home shop (on the wish list, lol). That sounds like pretty brutal wear on that lead screw, but with grinding dust on everything over the years it sounds like surface grinders lead a pretty hard life in a commercial setting.

@@EverettsWorkshop Oh, I never thought your lack of videos was due to "not wanting to work on things" or "not wanting to film while doing it". We all struggle with the fact that a day has 24 hours, and there are some things that are more important to machining (unless that's how you pay your bills, of course).

Thanks for the shout out, Everett. It is much appreciated. I never quite understood why bronze is so grabby. I learned about that the hard way. LOL! Rather than using the knee, I've started using a hand wheel on the head's power feed to drill into soft materials like bronze. A lot smoother than the quill handle. Besides, I hate moving the knee. HAHA!

Hi Greg, sorry it took so long to get this footage edited and posted. I got my mill used, and apparently the fine quill feed wheel is missing on my machine, so the knee was my option. Will likely be a build project at some point for that too as the "to do" list gets worked through!

Thanks Shawn, we just couldn't get this part through the original tool dealer, and the only other option to purchase was from a similar machine that is sold in Australia. Which is hard to deal with postal service lately anyway. So, making a new one was the only option. I was just surprised at how tight tolerance thread the cheap East Asian tap cut, given the little amount of backlash at the end.

@@EverettsWorkshop It is hard to get parts for some of the equipment sold these days. I was able to order a nut for mine through Grizzly but I found it had a loose fit and more backlash than I had hoped for . Your right I ordered one of those taps as well to make a new one and they are surprisingly tight tolerance.

Great to see you in the shop Everett and a lovely little project to wade back in on. I had to make a left hand internal trapezoidal about that size this summer. Too cheap to buy a tap, I did the trial and error, fiddle about, and a whole bunch of re-grinds until I got one. But it was enjoyable and it was for family, xo yeah. Anyhow, you have a great fall season and we all hope to see you around in future, cheers!

Hey Howie! This is the first experience I've had with trapezoidal threads per se - messed with a bit of Acme threading a while back but not the metric version like this. I can imagine that threading into a cylinder from the side with a single point would be a pain, hopefully yours was at least into a flat face!

@@EverettsWorkshop Actually the tool clearance took a while to work out, but being a LH it was cut from the chuck side out, on another project I was cutting 11 1/2 TPI in a shallow blind hole, that took a lot of thinking, no measuring with wires, just seat of the pants trial and error. Lots of fun!

Lol, thanks Chris! The tap was some oddball Amazon store name, basic East Asian import stuff, but it seemed to cut ok. Has that "Blue Nano" coating stuff on it, not sure if it made any difference at all.

Steve and I help each other out, he's my buddy with the truck shop where I sometimes work. Back part time now, we'll see what he needs me to modify for him as time goes on. The shop here is functional, and I've gotten to use it for a few things now, but it's still a bit of a disaster. Entropy is a force that is constantly working against us and we need to constantly oppose it, lol!

Thanks, glad you like the videos! The mill table is 9"x42", the vise is a 6" unit, and the rotary table is an 8" unit. Hope you're having a great week!

Thanks Spehro! Yeah, had to order the tap from East Asia (got it through Amazon though), and it's got that "Blue Nano" coating on it. It seems like a lot of these little hobby lathes have that thread pitch so should be a handy one to keep around.

Everett what would you do to replace a 9/16 stud bolt that pulled all the threads out of a hub ? I have a 9/16 inch pull through stud but the shoulder is .588 inches before the locking part and a 9/16 drill bit to clean up the damaged thread area , I think the hub is cast iron , any thing you can tell me would help

If you have room either drill out & fit a bigger bolt, thread lock it on, then drill out & re thread to suit 9/16 stud & thread. Or make a bigger stud base with a 5/8 thread, with the stud shank reduced to suit the 9/16.

I would agree with Ted as one good thread repair option, but you might also check into whether a Heli-Coil type or Time-Sert type insert might work too. Might be simplest, but depending on how nasty the hole is, Ted's ideas might come into play.
