Lyrics:
We've all seen a man at the liquor store beggin' for your change
The hair on his face is dirty, dread-locked, and full of mange
He asks a man for what he could spare, with shame in his eyes
"Get a job you fu**in' slob," is all he replies
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in his shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to sing the blues
(Hook)
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Mary got pregnant from a kid named Tom that said he was in love
He said, "don't worry about a thing, baby doll I'm the man you've been dreaming of."
But three months later he say he won't date her or return her calls
And she swear, "goddamn, if I find that man I'm cuttin' off his balls"
And then she heads for the clinic and she gets some static walking through the door.
They call her a killer, and they call her a sinner and they call her a whore
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in her shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to choose
(Hook)
I've seen a rich man beg I've seen a good man sin
I've seen a tough man cry
I've seen a loser win and a sad man grin
I heard an honest man lie
I've seen the good side of bad and the downside of up
And everything between
I licked the silver spoon drank from the golden cup
And smoked the finest green
I stroked the fattest dimes at least a couple of times
Before I broke their heart
You know where it ends, yo, it usually depends on where you start
I knew this kid named Max who used to get fat stacks out on the corner with drugs
He liked to hang out late he liked to get shit-faced and keep the pace with thugs
Until late one night there was a big gun fight and max lost his head
He pulled out his chrome .45, talked some shit, and wound up dead
Now his wife and his kids are caught in the midst of all of this pain
You know it comes that way at least that's what they say when you play the game
God forbid you ever had to wake up to hear the news
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to lose
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like to have to lose

@@RPT_SLIME I understand. But, you don’t want to end up where I did. Alcohol is not the answer. It feels like it is. But, it will take everything until it takes your life. There used be a woman I knew back when I was 20 years old. I liked her alot. She used to hang out with my friends and I but I was super shy. So I found out one night that she loved this song. I also loved this song. Over the weeks I would play this song whenever she was around to get her to come and ask who was controlling the music/who owned the ipod. Eventually we started connecting. 11 years later we are still married and happier than ever. I owe almost everything great in my life to this song. EDIT: 2 years later we are still married and so happy together. This comment thread is honestly my greatest internet memory. Everytime yall comment it reminds of this awesome memory I have. Cheers! EDIT EDIT: TREAT YOUR WOMAN LIKE A QUEEN! Edit 27 March 2024: 500 replies. Can't reply anymore. Glad everybody enjoys my mushy love story about my wonderful wife haha. We are still together for sure and I dont see it ending at any point in the future.

I remember listening to this song with my dad in the early 2000s. He passed away sadly due to an accidental overdose while I was in a treatment center for opiates. I remember leaving the service and sitting down with some roommates of mine breaking down crying. Out of nowhere my house manager comes into the room, picks up the guitar, and starts playing this song. This is the only song I would ever tie to my father especially on an acoustic guitar. It took me back instantly to riding in my fathers truck and him showing me all of his favorite songs. I never believed in any sort of afterlife or anything spiritual until after that moment. I knew that was my fathers way of saying everything will be alright and I will never forget it. I love and miss you so much papa and I hope you're looking down at me proud....

My mom always played this song after my dad passed, she said it had a bigger meaning. I never fully understood. He was a good man that got lost and didn’t have anyone to help him when he needed it. I listen to it a lot to remind myself we all have our own paths and struggles. Him and this song taught me to never judge someone, but to offer my help.

I've heard this song on the radio countless times, but I never listened to what he is saying until just now. This song is actually an amazing way of getting across the point that you should never label someone, or a group of people based on what you think you know about them, You need to try to view things from their perspective, and understand you do not have the full picture of that person's life which has lead them to the state you see them in.

@@vaskylark I think a song, a piece of literature, a movie or whatever, can present or open a person up to a new perspective. After all, some art is supposed to have meaning, not just blind entertainment. However, one song shouldn't be shaping you entirely as a person. What an underrated song. Empathy. Some believe only humans have it because we are made in the image of God. God is love. Yet some of the same people believe that to act on empathy encourages weakness in others. That helping the poor encourages laziness. God helps those who help themselves! Losing your job because your car broke down too many times is simply evidence of some sort of moral weakness, not in fact a lack of the safety-net of money and family that people who lack empathy assume everyone has. You can't afford an apartment? Well, simply get a higher-paying job! So simple! Seriously, God forbid you should ever walk a mile in someone else's shoes. You might actually feel that YOU deserve empathy.

That's very interesting to me, because I always thought he was referencing that statement to his relationship experience... You know...-like if you start a relationship with a gorgeous cheater, after "helping" them cheat on their lover... In the future they are definitely going to cheat on you. Or you on them. Or both. Or the relationship will just end because you can never fully trust each other. But now that I've lived a little longer, I've met couples who started, "dirty" ... And are still together to this day. So, who really knows. But it's beautiful how these lyrics stir the souls of everyone here enough to type about it. 🙂

This song needs to go main stream again with what is happening in the US. Really understand what the people have to go through. Not what the rich and powerful want.

Reading the comments here has touched my heart so much it makes me cry. So MANY people have shared painful stories that were made better because of this song. I can't thank Everlast enough for writing and producing this song. I dare to say it is anointed by something bigger than us. My heart goes out to all the people who have shared their stories here.

I'll never forget being a young boy walking into the record store at the mall with my father who hates anything made after 1985 in the music world and hearing him ask the clerk for the new everlast cassette I thought it was for one of my cousins as a gift until I seen him ripping it open in the parking lot and literally walking briskly to get to his caddy to put this song on I was literally blown away. It just proves good music is good music

This song right here in my opinion is the best representation of life still to this day. We’re all drowning, in over our heads somehow, some of us are trying to pick up pieces which weren’t our fault. We can dwell on it or pick ourselves up and move forward, choices.

You should never forget that you were homeless once and never disrespect anyone that is homeless no matter what they are doing to get their needs met. The homeless population is roughly 90 + percent males and they are the ones that for the most part refused to be pussy whipped and bowed down

This is is a beautiful testimony. 🥺🥰 Truly. It's amazing the impact words, spoken or sung is song, can be to a person. This song means so much to me. It's saved me, and now I live a comfortable life. More so than the average person. I'm 33 and don't have to work. But I don't let this change me. This song is a reminder that we are all people, and all people are worthy of love. It's my reminder to always be the kind, giving, and helpful person I have always been. It's my reminder that I'm no different than the homeless mother with her children barely surviving in their car that barely works. That I'm no different than the millionaire down the road from me. I vowed to always help people when I can, and I do to this day, thanks to the things that remind me to stay true to myself, like this song. ❤️ I love how much you adore your sweet Samantha. You can see it just by hoe you type about her.

The message here: don’t judge or harm people who are down. They have enough struggles as it is. If you can’t help them, pray for them, if you can’t pray for them leave them alone.

Praying is a sad excuse for an attempt to help someone
@lindsaymays7206

T Laut, I agree. Prayer is useless and empty. It never stopped any war, it never miraculously cured any disease or fed any starving children ect. It’s just a way for people to FEEL like they’re doing something without having to actually do anything.

Never look down on anybody because yu never know when yu could be in same situation. I think we all need to help each other- praying?? Ya my praying isn’t going to help somebody who hasn’t eaten in days, or no place to go- maybe it makes me feel better because I think “I’m doing something to help”??

Folks, I think many didn’t quite understand my comment. I stated if you can’t (the key word here is can’t ) leave them alone. I wasn’t encouraging anyone or imposing my view or opinion upon anyone. Prayer is something I do. I don’t judge your methods or principles so chilly chill chill! Lol. Be well everyone!
