Lyrics:
We've all seen a man at the liquor store beggin' for your change
The hair on his face is dirty, dread-locked, and full of mange
He asks a man for what he could spare, with shame in his eyes
"Get a job you fucking slob, " is all he replies
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in his shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to sing the blues
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Mary got pregnant from a kid named Tom that said he was in love
He said, "don't worry about a thing, baby doll I'm the man you've been dreaming of."
But three months later he say he won't date her or return her calls
And she swear, "god damn, if I find that man I'm cuttin' off his balls"
And then she heads for the clinic and she gets some static walking through the door
They call her a killer, and they call her a sinner and they call her a whore
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in her shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to choose
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
I've seen a rich man beg I've seen a good man sin
I've seen a tough man cry
I've seen a loser win and a sad man grin
I heard an honest man lie
I've seen the good side of bad and the downside of up
And everything between
I licked the silver spoon drank from the golden cup
And smoked the finest green
I stroked the fattest dimes at least a couple of times
Before I broke their heart
You know where it ends, yo, it usually depends on where you start
I knew this kid named Max who used to get fat stacks out on the corner with drugs
He liked to hang out late he liked to get shit-faced and keep the pace with thugs
Until late one night there was a big gun fight and max lost his head
He pulled out his chrome .45, talked some shit, and wound up dead
Now his wife and his kids are caught in the midst of all of this pain
You know it comes that way at least that's what they say when you play the game
God forbid you ever had to wake up to hear the news
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to lose
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like to have to lose

The only way to be truly humbled is to walk it. I walked the road of many.. I was out on the street begging for change and I had to figure whether it was going to be beer or tobacco to help me through the next few days. People don't beg for food in the US for the most part they beg for release in whatever form it may come in.... Alcohol, Nicotine, and Illicit drugs are the main escape for 95% of the people on the street. I sobered up and used the same technique to travel anywhere I need to, I'd beg for money to pay for a gas to get a ride or just beg for a ride. What no one EVER understands is that it can happen to you overnight.

This song brings back and old nostalgia I forgot I had. My dad and I used to hit the road together, 5AM, continuously driving for upwards of 180 miles both directions just to get away from this bullshit world we live in; I was 11. We'd drive up to the mountain top and spend the whole day there until nightfall. It was a good time, mostly. We'd have this whole CD on rotation for hours, we didnt talk too much, but it was still a nice moment. Made me realize how much my dad was in pain, mentally. He had lived a hard life before me and music was his escape. I dont see much of my dad these days. I'm 15 now, and I've been in 6 long term rehab facilities since age 13. My dad is not around all the time anymore, and my mom is depressed and has become an alcoholic. I understand how this music helped my dad, because now it helps me. I've been clean from drugs for 6 months, and I have not had a suicide attempt since March this year. It is now August 2020. This song reminds me of the good times I've had with my dad, and it has inspired me to kick my old lifestyle to the curb and try to better myself. Edit: I just wanna thank everyone who has commented such supportive feedback on here, it is all very much appreciated. Thank you so much, guys, really, I mean it🙏

The message of this song is beautiful, always have empathy for others, and try and see things from their perspectives. Walking a mile in someone else's shoes could make someone's day, or even life. Don't be too quick to judge, you'd be surprised by how far a lil empathy goes.

I love this song so much. My son, Mitchell brought to to my attention about 2 years ago. He said "Mom, you'll really like song, you should check it out", which I did. The beat is awesome and I immediately started tappin my toes❣️ Then I listened to it again and really started to listen to the lyrics and man this song touched me. I teared up listening to the words. It's so very true, we will never really know what a person could be going through unless you walk in their shoes. My son & I listened to this song quietly together. It was a beautiful moment. Mt son Mitchell had schizophrenia and just recently struggled with a fentanol addiction. He was turned away many times from hospitals when he was seeking help because they were full and had no place for him. Was evicted from his apartment and on the streets for 4 months. After an altercation with the Police at 4 in the morning in a vacant building he was shot and killed. It could have been avoided, this police officer did not need to shoot to kill my son. 😢😢 It's only been 6 months and I heard this song yesterday while shopping in Winner's (a store my son & I shopped at together occasionally). It just brought back all the memories I had of him, all the beautiful happy memories of him and all the very sad difficult times he had struggling with his mental illness and his addiction. He was only 34 years old and beautiful, loving, talented gentle soul.❤❤

I heard this song many times but it spoke to me as I walked by someone's bunk while I was in rehab in New Orleans, a year ago I when I was 19. I stopped and heard the lyrics and I knew exactly what it meant, having been homeless, feeling rejected and lost for being gay, needing drugs and having been judged by my family, and the ex who abandoned me at my worst. I attempted suicide by overdose but woke up a few days later and this song became one of my biggest sources of inspiration and motivation. Some people just don't know what its like. But if you know what its like... You know. This song is one of the realest I have ever heard, and it is a masterpiece.

I listen to this song, and I hear the stories it tells. I see the pain in all of your lives. But you don’t know what pain is like until you’ve known what life is like without it. Life is short, and y’all can’t think about all the bad things. Sometimes you gotta put it behind you. We’re stuck on a rock spinning around a big ball of fire, but we’re stuck together. And we’re all we’ve got. Look up at the moon, and think to yourself, someone knows how I feel, and sees this moon in the night sky. You’re never alone. You’re just not looking for people in the right places.

I was homeless when I was 11 yrs old. My Mother was on drugs & our house was full of addicts. Most the time I didn’t know where she was. I didn’t want her to get in trouble so I stayed with friends until their parents asked too many questions. Then I slept in cars, a tree house, & more. I was walking one time in winter. Snow on the ground no coat. She saw me, had just made some money & we went to Walmart to get a coat. I don’t remember where she went after. I know that what you did meant a great deal. God bless you for your kindness & thank you ❤️

I raised a gun to my head and was about to pull the trigger, and this song came on... I just sat there and listened, by the end I put the gun down and went to bed... It still amazes me how this song in a way helped that night... Mad respect for the upload brother, stay sane and stay strong...

Venezuelan, 38, an immigrant, starting over again, alone and away from the loved ones. Along this path, I have met a few amazing people and also those to whom I gave my trust and who failed at me. This was another cool song/video on MTV back in the late 90s as a teenager in a different life context. Now it is an anthem for endurance to whatever life brings. When you feel it is getting hard to keep your head out of the water be reminded you are not alone in this. Play it fair. Respect others if you can't be in their shoes.

I grew up going through rock bottom as a kid, this song just reminds me of everything I've seen and how far I've come because of it, we were homeless, my mom married a child abuser, I was assaulted, they both became alcoholics, I spent my life isolated from the outside world because no one understood my life
