Every dave meltzer five star match ranked from worst to best
@Wurzelknecht
@Wurzelknecht 3 жыл бұрын
That would be interesting, but also a long-ass list. Some of the 5-stars Meltzer gave out in the 80s were just confusing to me, and at times it seemed he threw a fiver at a match just for being chaotic and super violent and gory because of the novelty factor. Two matches that come to mind is the Sheepherders vs Fantastics, which in my memory just looked like your average ECW garbage brawl with lots of blood, and the other is the famous first 5-star match of Tiger Mask vs. Dynamite Kid from 83, which IMO is not their best match, and could be summed up as both of them spamming and no-selling Tombstones and Dynamite threatening to kill TM with a broken bottle out of frustration.

My parents got cable in 1997 when I was 9 years old. I'll never forget stumbling upon RAW is WAR on Monday nights on the USA Channel. I instantly became obsessed with Taker, Kane, DX, Austin, the Hart Foundation, Pillman, The Patriot, Shamrock, etc. I found out about WCW shortly after and never understood how anybody thought it was anywhere close to being as good as WWF until just recently lol.

1997 was truly the greatest wrestling year of the 90s. The Montreal Screwjob, The Dawn of The Attitude Era, Hell in A Cell was introduced, Heel Bret Hart, HHH becoming King of the Ring, Undertaker as WWF champion, Kane, D Generation-X, Rock joins The Nation, That year is *GOLD*

It’s really great, I recently rewatched all the Raw’s and PPVs from 97, it’s really great, the only thing that brings it down is the post-Montreal malaise. The Raws between Montreal and Tyson’s first appearance are awful. The only good thing during that time was Austin and Rocky feuding over the IC belt.

Canadian Stampede is by far one of the very, very best PPVs that the WWE ever put together. I remember watching the entire show as well as recording it on VHS, and it never felt boring to me at all, the main event by itself was awesome and it's a shame that it often gets so overlooked. Watching wrestling in the spring/summer of '97 with WWF, WCW, and ECW brings back so many memories.

HBK vs. Undertaker is a fantastic brawl and deserves so much more credit than it gets for being how a grudge match should play out. And while a non-finish is usually groan-inducing, for this match it made sense and gave logic to the need for the Hell in a Cell structure.

It wasn't even a real no finish, ended with pinfall. I mean yeah, distraction, but it is even more significant considering that Brock Lesnar attacked both Reigns and Strowman at HIAC 2018, and the match was called off. At Bad Blood, HBK was bleeding for God sake, yet he won via pinfall.

Possibly the greatest year in WWE history in terms of storytelling. The midcard was mostly shit, but there were some stars on the rise that were destined for greatness like Triple H, Mankind and The Rock, as well as a stacked main event roster who each seemed to have at least two feuds at once, and all were somehow interlinked with each other or led into the next feud. Bret feuded with Austin and HBK, the first leading to USA vs. Canada and Austin vs. Owen, and the feud between HBK/Bret led to HBK feuding with Taker, who at the same time was feuding with Paul Bearer and Mankind, which led to the Taker/Kane feud, which also resulted in a split between Bearer and Mankind, and so on and so forth. And despite all that went down in real life with HBK and Bret fighting backstage, Austin getting injured, the Montreal Screwjob and all that chaos, I don't think I have ever seen another year in wrestling where ALL the pieces fell into each other so perfectly. Well apart from gang warfare and the Junior-heavyweight division. That was shit. But hey, at least it introduced me to Taka Michinoku and Great Sasuke back then. Business-wise and in terms of the overall cards, 97 wasn't a strong year on first glance. But man oh man did it leave it's mark on history!

I think Survivor Series is the start of the Attitude Era. It is the first time we ever see the WWF scratch logo, the first time we get a WWF Attitude commercial (which ironically included Bret Hart), and the first time we ever hear the D-Generation X music (which was used to promote the December PPV). It’s also the last time we see Bret Hart, the man who is the most synonymous with the New Generation Era, and he gets screwed for real on his way out the door. That’s as Attitude as it gets.

Bret vs Taker at SummerSlam is the best wrestling match ever, and shows why you don't need to do 500 movez a minute to have a good match. Shawn Michaels plays the role of referee to perfection. Every single thing that happens in the match matters and makes sense. Bret gives Undertaker by far his best match of his first 15 years. And damn, that finish. I think it’s very telling how many times Michaels main evented over Bret, even when Bret was champ. Tells you all you need to know

U could definitely tell with the hart heel turn too, Vince had already sown the seeds of letting Bret Walk.

Why is HBK the clear GOAT?!?! With the weakest roster ever in the mid 90s you never hear "shawn just couldn't have a bad match with that guy" even the best of the best had their best matches with HBK

Difference between marks and wrastlin fans is marks only care about a ppv's in ring work, wrastlin fans like all the build up before, during and after a ppv.

Only slightly disappointed as I read the title wrong. I didn’t see WWE and wanted to see a ranking of all PPVs including the ECW and WCW ones

I hate beating this horse, but eh whatevs. I fail to see how people can think Vince was in the wrong. He did what he had to do to protect his promotion. Yea, his own fuck up for not getting the belt off Bret before freeing him up, but that's neither here nor there. That's coming from someone who considers Bret his personal GOAT. My all time favorite, and even I'm saying Vince wasn't wrong. I hated it, it sucked beyond belief, but it was a necessary evil that had to happen. Special mention, the DX PPV has Russo's diarrhea all over it.

How Owen didn't become a main event mega face after the screw job boggles the mind... (looking at you HBK and HHH). 1997 royal rumble could of been awesome. Owen and British Bulldog only lasted like 7 minutes if they were 2 of the final competitors with Bret Taker Mankind Vader it would of made it a lot more anticlimactic. They were the biggest stars in that rumble other then those guys so idk why eliminate them so early
