That clip from Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was interesting. No CGI, so they must have done it twice; once normal and again in makeup, and had Fredric do the exact same motions and facial expressions, and then dissolved from one to the other. It's pretty seamless; I was surprised when he appeared to physically transform on-screen. All done in camera and in the edit; real old school Hollywood magic.
@sullfa
@sullfa 4 жыл бұрын
GeneralNerd it was one take. They used filtered lighting and make up to achieve the effect. The camera cuts away from his face only once (for his wig and teeth to be put on/in) but it’s still a terrific effect for 1931.

you can see the start of sudden shift in brilliance in film at the start of '71 with Gene Hackman winning for The French Connection. No doubt Patton was fantastic the year before, and there are of course timeless classics and performances (Paul Newman in the Hustler, countless Brando and Bogart ficks) before. But generally speaking imo, the early 70's really changed film for the better. What a fantastic era.

@30:01 Anthony Hopkin's portrayal as Hannibal in the movie "Silence of the Lambs" was so good especially the part where he will talk for long without blinking. @30:29 Al Pacino's performance of a blind man and his long speech was terribly amazing...His line "This is such a crack of shit!" lol love that line though haahaa. @36:28 Sean Penn's dramatic line "Is that my daughter in there?" combined with his action and crying voice of a father made me cry from the movie "Mystic River". I think Pheonix was fucking terrific in Joker but Adam Driver is at least equally good in Marriage Story. Two very different performances but I’ll be happy either way. Everyone keep in mind that the oscars aren’t all that important in the grand scheme of things, art is all personal opinion :)

Emil Jannings, the first recipient for the best actor Oscar, died in disgrace in 1950 after starring in a number of Nazi propaganda films. He was unemployable after that and often goes unmentioned in Oscar history. Check out the Blue Angel (not a propaganda film) if you ever get the chance because its one of his best performances alongside Marlene Dietrich.

Why would you include a clip from the dubbed version of Life is Beautiful instead of the original Italian spoken by Benigni?

Fun fact: if you watch the full scene from Mystic River, there’s like twenty cops trying to restrain Sean Penn. That wasn’t supposed to happen; the original script called for like two cops, but Penn kept breaking free because he had become so immersed in the performance. Method at it’s finest.

Then again, a lot of peoplei say that the only reason Denzel Washington won, was because at the BAFTA awards Russell Crowe got cut off on the speech he was making for best actor in Great Britain for some reason. It’s a real shame because nobody could’ve done a job better than Russell Crowe for A Beautiful Mind. But he refused to toe the line as far as Academy is concerned. And they didn’t like his attitude about it so they picked the next best thing and that was Denzel Washington. So in my opinion Russell Crowe got robbed of an Oscar because the academy decided to cut off his acceptance speech. It’s a real shame.

There's always years open for debate; but sometimes a performance is so devastating, overwhelming that it just blows the competition away. e.g DDLewis in 'There will be blood', Nicolas Cage in "Leaving LV', McConaughey in 'Dallas B Club', Joaquim Phoenix in 'Joker'. Other times it is really the film that has elevated the actor; other times it is like a tribute to a deserving actor, who has been overlooked, and just deserves statue.
