They're the civ I'd predict to be the most likely new addition in the next expansion. I even made a full high effort ass video on them too - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nL2capx3zsm1Yps.html

They should Call it the Skandinaviens .A Alliance between danes/norway/sweden. Civ based on Aggression/Trade/Raid. Castle Age should be a Splitt. Just like the Mecenary House from the Byz. WEST NORTH EAST. West is for France Normandy ..north for England and east for Russ/varangian .. cuz norway and danes focus more on France and England while Sweden Establish the Kiev Russ and in fact are even the Varangain Guard from the Byz.

@@ChillyEmpire You saying that Byzantines "identified themselves to be more Greek" is misleading. They considered their empire Greek and Roman, unable to remove their Roman identity despite adopting Greek language and culture {this was due the roman pride and significance of roman achievements etc.}. Historical consensus and solid evidence confirm that Byzantines saw themselves as the last Romans, directly continuing the Roman Empire until its final remnants.

The next update either needs to be panamerican civs or maybe a theme of civs like aztecs and spanish. The spanish, the norse and something like the magyars, bulgars, poles are sorely missing from europe's roster. Venice could also have very interesting mechanics. But we can't have an all europe update, because other regions of the world are still very underrepresented.

Alexander Nevsky famously fought with Teutons and Swedes, but didn't fight with Mongols. Instead he had recognized himself as the vassal of Khan and paid him a tribute. Actually in Russian historiography he considered sometimes as a symbol of the Eurasian and anti-Western path. Personally I would prefer Southern Rus variant (focused on Ukrainian land), may be something like Kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia (Kingdom of Ruthenia). Starting from the 13-th century its warfare was kind a mix between Old Rus, European knightly and Nomadic step traditions. Although it's very interconnected with Poland and Lithuania as well.

@@ChillyEmpire he is quite controversial figure in the Russian history. Obviously he was always venerated as an ancestor of Russian ruling house and for his military victories. He considered to be a 'saint' in the Russian Orthodox church. The Golden legend of the Old Rus. According to other view he was a 'traitor', who refused an alliance with the Pope and European kings against the Mongols, and bowed the knee to the khan. And the danger of the Teutons and Swedes, as well as the scale of the battles with them, are exaggerated.

Listened to this whole video in the background and it was really interesting so thanks! My money's on Spanish as one of the next civs added, cos I've seen it requested a lot in the broad AoE community (AoE2 players as well) and the devs saw a lot of success adding two highly requested fan favourite civs in the last expansion. For the second civ, I'm not sure what the devs would choose, but there are a lot of great options. I'd absolutely love to see an AoE4 take on the Aztec military. Your civ concept for the Vietnamese made me really interested in them. Adding a second African civ or a Hindu civ would be incredibly cool. I also have a friend who really really wants to see either the Scots or the Irish (would they be called "the Gaels" in this game?). We're spoiled for choice! It's a shame we only get two of these a year!

I feel there is a distinct lack of central asian civilizations here. The steppes were incredibly important, and there is extensive history between many states of many different steppe cultures that allows the Mongol invasions to happen. The spread of religions like Buddhism, Islam, Tengrism, Christianity and Manichaeism, and the flow of knowledge, trade and technology between these steppes civilizations is big part of the Mongol's advantage in their conquests. I could see these in the game; the Kara-Khanid Khanate, Kyrgyz Khaganate, Qocho Kingdom and the Kipchak Confederations with either the Cumans or the Kimeks. Check them out, I feel you'd find them interesting.

Ukrainians, as usual, come with their alternative history. You are fantasy lovers. In the game Russian tsarstvo = Rus the full historical title of the tsar of Russia (The Grand Duke of Moscow) sounds like this: "Great sovereign, by the grace of God, tsar and Grand Duke of all Rus, Vladimir, Moscow, Novgorod, Pskov, Ryazan, Tver, Yugorsky, Perm, Vyatka, Bulgarian, Tsar of Kazan, Tsar of Astrakhan, Tsar of Siberia and all the northern country lord" All this is united Rus- the game developers absolutely reliably named the faction

I paused before the New Civilizations Section. I did some research and here's my list. Let's see how close we are. Within each region, I ranked them based on how deserving I think the civilization is of being represented, based off of population, longevity, cultural scope, and sphere of influence. Asia --Tamils - the most deserving of all listed; greatest population after Song China in year 1,000; massive cultural development; huge scope of influence; long lasting --Bengalis (Pala Empire, Bengal Sultanate) --Khmer - very interesting design on your channel --Goryeo/Joseon --Vietnamese - most exciting design in any of your videos; love the teleporting hideout network --Majapahit Europe --Spanish --Danes - probably not enough population or longevity; but that Saga system design was cool Africa --Amazigh --Ethiopians --Beninese --Kingdom of Matupa Americas --Maya --Mississippians - the faction I'm rooting for the most getting into the game --Andeans - Wari and Tiwanaku Empires early, Inca Empire late --Toltec - probably not long lasting enough; problems would occur with balancing them and retaining some accuracy --Puebloans - probably not a great enough population, but they're on the bubble and deserve consideration --Aztecs - definitely didn't last long enough to deserve a spot; but wow the design on your website is the most exciting one Variants --Timurid Empire (Mongols) --Liao or Jin Dynasty (China) - during the AoE4 timeline, China had 20-25% of the world's population; they deserve a lot of representation --Ghana or Songhai Empire (Mali) --Solomonic Dynasty or Sultanate of Mogadishu (Ethiopia) --Some sort of reference to the Crusades

About Novgorod. My concept in nutshell to make it more distinctive: - Trading - market buffs; - Administration - unique non-military unit called Posadnik, that buffs villagers and traders similarily to HRE prelates or Byzantine cisterns; - Defense - can build stone walls and towers without need of Spasskaya landmark, unique military unit called Tysiatskii, that can build better defenses and buff built ones. Unlike regular Rus, Novgorod doesn't have warrior monks and has less religion buffs. By the way, Golden Horde also was more Turkic faction. They were Kipachak Cuman, Tatar, Ubzek Turkic speaking empire. that became own thing from Mongols.

Markov, why are you making claims that are not even true? the golden horde was not completely Mongolian I would agree, but they still had a big Mongol presence alongside Kipchak Turkic's, as well as other Turkic's who had served the Mongol empire previously before the conquest of Europe and other parts of the world. the Mongols were not the only people who filled the manpower to cause their mass conquest. so, while the Mongols were not the only big significant ethnic group which ruled the golden horde, they were still big enough to be recognized as a division of the Mongol empire, since there were still Mongols serving the golden horde and just like other Mongol divisions. I would like to contest you on the usefulness of Mangudai. They are a hell to deal with in 3v3 and 4v4 team games, as a single Mongol player can devastate your trade, with the only counter pretty much being walls. It is a very effective surprise attack that will both cripple the enemy economy as well as steal the attention of all 4 enemy players. Granted it is a niche use, Mangudair are not to be underestimated. They just don't fill every combat scenario, which is fine.

With the introduction of variant civs, I'm imagining that they could introduce two civs being "variants of each other". I'm not savvy enough with history, but what I can come off with would be something like: instead of making a "Celt civilization", they could introduce both the Irish and the Scots. They're "variant civs" of each other, effectively introducing two new civs for the price of making one.

Great idea with the whole google map thingy! Really puts into perspective how vast the world is and fun to see where all civilizations are located at. And brings a small tear to eye seeing that some of my flags getting put into good use :> About the Hungarian black armor: Yes they were indeed black, or very dark blue, was due the result of the Acid-bath the steel armor was given add more corrosive resistance to the steel parts. The process is called Blueing. There was different kind of acids, but the one that made them black, or a dark shade of blue was the cheapest one, and the "shiny" acid bath that made the shiny grey steel armor we mostly accosiate armor with. Actually the Cheapest armor, ironically consider the OTD, was the black one used by the Hungarians. And a reasoning for this is that they were often under a tight budget, they were afterall more Mercentile army, that was being personally invested by a Lord or a King's own pocket. Also love the fact that every nation Flags are filled with symbols and simple colors lines. Meanwhile Benin: ""You know what would be a great idea to discourage foreign invasions? In addition to the Tamils, I'd also like to see Rajputs or Odias (the Eastern Ganga Empire and the Gajapati empires) as Indian factions. Rajputs are great for a campaign against the Delhi Sultanate, and would probably be a primarily cavalry civ, with a unique cavalry improvement (fake elephant trunks) to gain bonuses against elephants. The Odias on the eastern coast of India also have a rich history and they were one of the only Indian empires untouched by the Delhi Sultanate. It would be an elephant civ with worker (villager) elephants that don't require dropsites.

Novgorod Republic is very different from the rest of Russia, Novgorod is the largest, most influential and richest city in Rus (It was the varangians who came from Novgorod for Byzantium), Rus began from Novgorod, not from Kiev, democracy ruled in it, decisions were made by the people on the square, and the republic itself lived off trade. Great compilation! Although it’s nice to dream, I think to bring it a little bit back to reality, I don’t see Koreans, Portuguese, Benin, Hungarians, or Amazigh having any chance of making it in. All of them are either overshadowed by other civs in the time period or don’t have enough to distinguish themselves from current civs already in the game, unless they rework current variants into new civs entirely. I also can see New World civs being completely left out because as we saw with AoE3DE, “proper representation” is so much thornier with Native American civs that devs might just want to avoid that headache entirely lest people try to cancel them for giving those civs Bombards (they were even throwing a fit in the comments to your Reddit posts for not coming up with a completely new siege system)

Similar with cavalry, give them a single, semmi-heavy multi-purpose sofa-style horse in imperial. In Argentina (and I believe in USA too), natives are closely associated with horse-riding. romanians have great history too but sadly they were 3 principalities divided as 3 separate nations and i think they couldnt fit them into just a single civ bu it would be so cool

Great Video. I am missing a viking faction that turned into sweden. Cause the vikings kicked English asses a Lot of Times and sweden was a big enemy of the hre in the 30 years war. They would have so much Potential für unique units especially ships

I want to see a southamerica civ before anything else we got so much on the easrtern half of the world we need something from the west side. Aztecs with a human sacrifice landmark where either you kidnap other people villagers or use yours to get buffs or special units

Theyre starting to think the Incans did have a writing system with something called a syllab Quipu. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a5yJdM2rl7rcn3U.htmlsi=k-nmnO40sS2A3F64 The first part and last part of the documentary discusses it.

To my knowledge the Quipu is not a full on writing system so much as a cataloguing system but I'll check out the video thanks for the link!

@ChillyEmpire it's more of a recent hypothesis. There is a Spanish account of some Quipus representing syllables instead of numbers. In that documentary i linked, they sorta go over an odd Incan quipu with the main thought is that it's writing and it's one of the syllable quipus

A little surprised you didn't include a Scandinavian civ to be added. Not that I mind, they're so overdone.

Is stupid to have precolombian civs as they were at the stone age until spain arrive, how could they stand against any other civ without giving them unhistorical staff just because they want to be inclusive? in aoe3 they did the same and they are some of the divs less used by players Also there werent big precolombian empires as the HRE, France, China or others in the rest of the world, as for example aztecs werent an empire but a big tribe that had under his foot the other tribes, always without ruling them, thats why when spain arrived they got the support of almost every other tribe to conquer the aztecs in the USA also werent nothing similar to empires, they werent even like the aztecs. Indian tribes were really small and even if devs add them they would be like mongols but worse

1. I’m generally not a fan of how AOE3 handled the native empires. 2. You literally described an empire. Most other empires had similar issues - one central “tribe” that dominated the ones around them. 3. Read up on the Mississippian civilization. It’s not this “small” forest dwelling concept that American media would have you believe. Regardless, there’s so much interesting flavor here to explore. AOE4 already takes plenty of historical liberties.
