@@switchie9762 you do realize you’re literally watching a video which mentions and rectifies this problem, right? This is literally the case for most historical claims and always has been. Malta was missed. In 1798 when young Napoléon was a Republican general, he was on he's way to invade Egypt, to block British trade from India. He stopped in Malta and conquered it. British invited the island in 1800 and got it "official" in 1814 as part of Treaty of Paris to end the Napoleonic Wars (for now). Malta was a strategic naval base, half way between Spain and the Middle East and it played a key role in both World Wars, later one got more attention. Modern Republic of Malta got her independence in 1964.
@MetalGearMalta
@MetalGearMalta 2 ай бұрын
The Maltese invited the British to come to their aid against Napoleon to free the island. They formally wrote to the queen and invited the armed forces over to Malta and made a treaty with the queen, and the Maltese accepted British forces help, but the Maltese argued that since they've formally invited the empire over, they had the right to severe that pact and part ways with the empire. Eventually the British spent 200 years in Malta regardless, and in the early 1960's then Malta prime minister first tried to negotiate with Britain to let Malta become part of it, but the Brits refused and from then, they pushed to gain independence and eventually succeeded in gaining freedom from the Brits in 1979.

@tobe1207 I agree, I was mostly being silly. If you play a game of Alternate History where you look at the values of a country and what they would do if they had the power of the British Empire or the American hegemony, pretty much every other country would have had worse outcomes for native peoples/ conquered/colony. So you are right about silly apologies unless for a joke. People aren't rational though and find it hard to look at hard bits of history in a sober, levelled sort of way. If you ever want to feel awe at a man's accomplishments despite the hate he gets nowadays- Capt James Cook was a brilliant human.

Arguably, by the 1910's, the Germans had largely managed to present a credible opponent to the Royal Navy, with the 2nd largest navy in the world, even bigger than the US Navy or Japanese Imperial Navy of the time (both then up-and-coming navies and powerful forces themselves) But the Royal Navy was still far larger than even the Kaiserliche Marine.

A lot of my ancestors suffered under the British Empire but I hold no grudges against the modern British nation state, though that may be because I was born and raised here ;) some context for the invasions would always be welcome, however. For example I wasn't aware whatsoever that Britain didn't establish a presence in West Africa until it had to forcibly abolish the slave trade, as it was so profitable that the Warlords of that region didn't want it to stop. That was the casus belli anyway, but they still hadn't invaded before then, so.. All European Empires were competing with each other at that time. Had Britain not ruled over India, it would have been the French, or the Dutch, or the Portuguese, or the Mughals, or the Marathas, etc.. The days of Empire are over thankfully but at the same time the world is still a geopolitical chessboard, whether we like it or not

@@lokki245 I’m confused… literally speaking, no one’s invaded the United Kingdom and I’m assuming you’ve confused it for England or Great Britain. The closest occurrence I can think of was during WW1 when a German battleship attacked a coastal town, sitting directly in their waters. But that’s more of a bombardment… The United Kingdom has never been a victim like you’re implying, but I don’t think that means they’ve always been the aggressor, I also don’t understand the problem with the term “invading”, it hardly means conquest. WW2 Operation Barbarossa is still referred to as an invasion even when it failed. Napoleons invasion of Russia was still an invasion when it failed. In fact, this list could be much bigger if you change the terms to “conflict with”.

@@XXXTENTAClON227 I suspect the reason for your confusion is because you haven't read what I actually wrote.. I didn't mention the United Kingdom and, yes, I am talking about a very long time span. My point about the word 'invaded' was that Britain [sic] didn't invade many of their countries in the way that is implied by this video - or implied by the other videos and books of the same ilk. My point about "Britain , and especially England" was simply that they were invaded (often unsuccessfully) relentlessly throughout history, very often by their closest neighbours (including those within what is now the UK) and often by a combination of those neighbours. I was simply pointing out the very loose way that the word invaded was being used.

I've lived many years in southern Spain at Costa del Sol, specifically in Malaga province (Andalusia) and there is definitely a HUGE AMOUNT of British inhabitants in a lot of towns in that region (for example in Benalmádena and Fuengirola). Not to forget the Canary Islands. I lived for a while in Tenerife, in the southern part of the island in a small town close to Las Americas, and I remember, when I moved in to town and started getting to know the people living there, that a high percentage of the inhabitants were British. Besides that, I have to mention that I have double-nationalitie as I'm French 🇫🇷 and argentinean 🇦🇷, and I gotta add the information that in Argentina (a couple of hundred years ago) the British have tried 2 TIMES to invade the country attacking Buenos Aires (Argentina's capital city) being rejected both times, but they've occupied the "Malvinas" (called by them "Falkland Islands") together with other islands in that part of the South Atlantic. Argentina has tried to get the islands back attacking in April 2, 1982 and starting a war which England won and as a result, the islands are STILL occupied and under the power of Britain and Argentina keeps claiming and trying to get them back (by diplomatic lines and international justice) so far with no success.

The narrator did make a few mistakes, one being "England" instead of Britain. The welsh with their long bows were an integral part of the victories in early days, and the Scots were known to "stand" under punishing conditions to turn the tide of battle. Remember Napoleon was the 1800s Hitler. Many of these countries were invaded to help the people kick out Napoleon (like Portugal and Spain) and others were Napoleon's allies (like the USA in 1812, when the UK burned down the white house)

@@salientsolution5436 Few years ago we had people marching in the streets shouting "death to the British" and we reward them by giving them a free house, free money, free healthcare you think that shit would've gone down like that in the past?

@@salientsolution5436 We are in financial ruin yet we send money to Ukraine, mass homelessness yet we house Ukrainians for money show me when the government has offered money to house British homeless people... Ukraine had nine years to prepare after Crimea they did nothing (join NATO, EU, Warsaw pact, invest in better military budget nothing.) And now I'm paying for their stupidity. FUCKING JOKE

One thing that’s interesting is the even though we here in the United States were “neutral” during the time we actually took over the occupation of Iceland so that the British could focus more on the war. We also occupied Greenland. We had a history of wanting to buy Greenland and Iceland from the Danish, but were refused throughout the centuries. We were like “I’m gonna take them” lol 😂

Malta, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Falklands, Ascension, St Helena, Pitcairn, Diego Garcia, etc - he didn't mention them and they're all still British. Nor the Channel Islands, a remnant of the Duchy of Normandy.

A lot of this was done under sail when it took many months to go any distance, and the journey itself could be as hazardous as the encounter on arrival.
