Every driver ban in F1 history

Formula 1 drivers very rarely get banned from races - in fact, just five times in the history of the world championship has a driver sat out a race due to an official FIA sanction. But, unsurprisingly, F1's history of bans is a bit more complicated than that, so in this video we also look at the other drivers who have served what could be termed as 'unofficial' bans over the course of F1 history.

@@bumblebity2902 Those were terrible knee-jerk punishments, particularly Irvine's being raised from one race to three on appeal. That was simple tyranny from the FIA, serving no purpose other than to intimidate teams into not questioning any decisions. Irvine and Hakkinen should never have received bans or even punishments of any sort, they were all racing incidents. And while Schumacher may have broken a particular rule, a 5-second penalty was proportionate justice, not a two-race ban.

Hakkinen's penalty was quite harsh. The Silverstone incident was more a racing incident, and Mika actually didn't cause the big pile up at Hockenheim. Most cars involved were towards the back. Three cars all going for the same line into turn 1 caused Hakkinen's crash, just a lap 1 accident. 2002 was such a bore of a season, I don't even remember Massa being replaced by Frentzen. Although I do remember him, crashing into almost everything except the safety car that year.

DaveMcIroy No, the extension of the ban still exists in many sports etc where you can appeal a decision after it had completed. For instance if you get a red card for a terrible challenge, you can get a 3 game ban, however if you argue and claim it wasn't a foul, but it is shown that in reality you were wrong, you'll be banned further. I thought Jenson Button was given a one-race ban following his collision with Pascal Wehrlein in Monaco (2017?, I think). However, as that was a one-off race for Jenson (him coming out of retirement to race for Alonso) he'll probably never actually serve it.

'94 was one crazy year. Some of those bans - not Michael's - seem harsh in hindsight. They seem to have become far too averse to bans since though, I'm still amazed Vettel didn't get a ban for hitting Hamilton not once but twice under safety car.

What about Christian Danner? He was banned from the 1987 Monaco GP after causing a collision with Michele Alboreto's Ferrari during the first qualifying session. Danner was in a warm-up lap and moving slowly, he didn't notice Alboreto arriving at full speed behind him, since the Italian was instead in a flying lap. The two cars collided, and the Ferrari was sent into the rails, catching fire immediately after the impact. Alboreto was unharmed but furious, and the stewards were mad too. So they decided to ban Danner from the rest of the weekend due to dangerous driving.

Vettel is slower than his teammate for multiple races now. He wasn't able to compete with Hamilton and Bottas, Leclerc was though. That seems to bother him to the point of him making ridiculous mistakes. Last race the top 3 drove away from him in the first few laps and he ended up spinning. Then he got over laped by hamilton and Leclerc and again couldnt keep up with them after he let them past. Apparently, dudes not on the same level as them anymore and starts to have ego issues.

DJP DJP he won’t win a race or two this year. Looking at the schedule I don’t believe there is a track they can win at. Leclerc is a better driver because Vettel doesn’t handle pressure at all. With Leclerc being the number 1 at Ferrari now Vettel will continue to crack under the pressure.

Penalty points on a superlicence should last for more than one year, like they do on a standard road licence in the UK (four years). We'd definitely see more bans if they did.
