(Ryan) Hey everyone! Thanks for stopping by and sharing in the fun of discovering the Easter Eggs in Modern Horizons. I'm seeing some of the same questions and remarks showing up here in the comments, so I'm just going to address a few en mass: 1. "These aren't Easter Eggs." The designers and developers of the game itself do refer to these type of inclusions as Easter Eggs, so I am following their lead. If it bothers you that much, take it up with Mark Rosewater: magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/making-magic/hidden-treasures-2006-12-11 2. "Fountain of Ichor is Phyrexian Oil!" Multiple WotC staff members have confirmed it is not a depiction of Phyrexian oil, so I deliberately did not read too much into this. 3. "You forgot Volrath's Stronghold!" I'm going to wink and say I did that on purpose so I could tell how many of you watched the whole video (for real though, I feel bad I missed this one and appreciate you guys calling it out lol) 4. "What about the droid attack on the wookies?" It is critical we send an attack group there, immediately.

"Sword of This and That" better be a real card on the next un- set.

Reveillark and Vesperlark are actually both musical references. A reveille is a type of bugle call used to wake people at dawn, while Vespers are a series of bells that call people to evening prayer. So Reveillark = dawn, Vesperlark = twilight. Given that, I don't think Vesperlark is a baby Reveillark - I think it's an *aged and dying* one. You can see that in the lighting of the art, the season in the background (spring greenery for Reveillark, winter for Vesperlark), and how the bright core of Reveillark is replaced by a reddish-orange ball of fire, like a dying star. Alternatively, the two are just different forms of a similar type of elemental, one for the dawn and one for dusk.

Ranger-Captain of Eos is a callback to Ranger of Eos, War Falcon and Knight-Captain of Eos. *Triple* easter egg.

Do you think Bazaar Trademage's text is also a reference to Squandered Resources? "He traded sand for skins, skins for gold, gold for life. In the end, he traded life for sand." -Afari, Tales

Wotc: "Hmm this card effect doesn't fit with this color, lets change it." Blue: *laughs in every color's abilities*

"Those [powerstones] were of great interest to this great guy, Urza!" Yeah, that guy really had his eyes on the prize when it comes to powerstones, too bad he didn't end up with his head on the right place...

I'm a little sad Brian missed the easter egg in Iceberg Cancrix's art; there's a tiny Brine Elemental in the block of ice it's holding!

The effect and flavor text on Hall of Heliod's Generosity, "The stronghold of Theros's light" is a reference to Volrath's Stronghold, which has this flavor text "the seed of a world's evil"

Heliod’s generous gift is a cycle with academy ruins (for artifacts) and volrath’s stronghold (for creature).

Finally I cant wait for more magic arcanum, this is actually what keeps me in magic

For those who don't know, Segovia is an actual city in Spain and the art of the angel reflects it.

Cloudshredder Sliver has similar art and flavor text to Skyknight Legionnaire.

I spotted more stuff on Serra : her +2 is Serra Aviary, -3 is as you said Serra Angel and -6 is Worship (first depicted with a Statue of Serra). Another Triple Egg =) And do you think, as I do, that the name of the expansion, Modern HORIZONS is somewhat linked to Horizon Canopy ? It's like they teased it and we didn't guess ^^

The lore of the Segovian Angel also references the story on the alpha (?) Rulebook and you can see the hippodrome on the background from the planechase (?) plane card for Segovia!

WOO YEAH another Heroes of Might & Magic fan. Nothing like waking up early, listen to that beautiful music and sending your armies to slay the land.

When I first saw Morophon in the spoilers, I jokingly said something along the lines of "Finally, a commander for my coward tribal deck!" Later throughout spoiler season, Pyrophobia got revealed. It's not exactly helpful for coward tribal but hey, at least they acknowledge the best tribe in the game.

nice way to hide Thornling's art. It has nothing to do with every other card in the cycle. What on earth were they thinking?

Recruit the Worthy and Sprout Swarm are actually throwbacks to the original Lab Rats, which creates Rats and has a really expensive buyback. Sprout Swarm is my favorite because it's an Instant, and, in a Saproling deck, at the end of your opponents turn you just tap everything and spam Sprout Swarm. If you have 25 creatures, you can get it in a 6th time by tapping the new ones as well.

Did you skip Nature's Chant? I found that one incredibly clever

Loved the video! You mentioned your “Bounce House” Pauper Deck, which I would love to see! Maybe you could even tie it in with a ‘what is pauper’ video ;)

The card "Urza's Rage" is a subtle reference to the card of similar name from Invasion. Both cards share many properties, such as mana cost, card type and abilities. This is for ludonarrative reasons. It is believable to the players that Urza is capable of the same anger multiple times. It's hard to say which card will end up seeing more play, Urza's Rage (MH1 151) or Urza's Rage (IN 178), but I'll make sure to include both in my Urza-based commander deck.

"Snow-Covered Island" is a double reference to the card "Island", originally printed in Alpha and reprinted multiple times in the early years of Magic. Firstly, it has "Island" in its name and secondly, it shares the subtype Island with the card "Island". Bonus fact: The first half of its name, "Snow-Covered", is a subtle nod to the fact that it has the supertype Snow. Wizards has sneakily put words related to winter, ice and snow into the names of Snow cards. Maybe a few of you have picked up on that already.

"I should probably make an entire video dedicated just to Urza" Dood, that's more like a mini-series. Like you could do a video about the Brother's War; a video about his encounters w/ Gaea, Sierra, the Tolarian Academy & the creation of Karn; a video about The Legacy; & a video about the Phyrexian Invasion & the 9 Titans. All of those things rly need to be explored in detail tbh

Force of Despair's art also refrences the Terror art from 10th edition. While not a perfect reference, the "body coming out of the skin" motif is shared by both artworks

As soon as I get Marit Lage's Slumber I will have my deck just about finished that's built around big "water" creatures. I have foils of Marit Lage token and Dark Depths as well as have Time of Ice. I have got her out once in casual free for all gameplay.

Winds of Abandon is also a reference to Settle the Wreckage. Winds is much more versatile as it is able to fill the roles of both Settle and Path, depending on whether you pay the overload cost or not, but this versatility comes at two caveats. One, the higher mana cost. Path is one, while Winds is 2, and Settle is 4, while Winds' overload is 6. The second caveat comes with the overload cost. While Settle the Wreckage reads "exile all attacking creatures target opponent controls" Winds' overload reads "Exile all creatures you don't control." This is functionally different in two ways. First, it hits more creatures because it hits all of your opponents, not just the one attacking you, and second it can be cast at any time and not just during attacks. This also means it can be used to wipe a board that isn't threatening because of combat (i. e. someone threatening to combo out and win that way) but it is a sorcery so it can't be played on an opponent's turn. I'm very interested to see if this sees play in commander, and I may try it out in some of my decks.

Bonus egg: Return from Extinction is also a reference to Extinction from Tempest, where the Slivers first appeared as well.

Another note, Knight of Old Benalia is a reference to Benalish Commander as well. They both suspend, are both from Benalia, and while Benalish Commander is affected by your creatures, Knight of Old Benalia buffs your whole team. It is also interesting to note that in both of their arts they appear to be walking through portals.

Thundering Djinns brainstorm reference is calling back to prophetic bolt, specifically its reprint in izzet vs golgari. Its even channeling lightining the same way ral zarek is.

I'm surprised that you didn't mention Unearth's Easter Egg when talking about it. The art shows a Phyrexian Negator!

Hall of Heliod's Generosity is now the third card in a cycle. Academy Ruins you mentioned is the blue one, and we have the black on in Volrath's Stronghold now just leaving a red and a green one to be created. Though with artifacts, creatures, and enchantments now claimed, finding cards for red and green to put on top of the library might be harder. If I had to guess, I would assume lands for green and instants/sorceries for red.

Both Munitions Expert and Goblin Matron are callbacks to Llorwyn block, as they have recognizably boggart-like features and outfits. Goblin Matron is also a pretty powerful tutor, and is played in the Legacy version of the Goblins deck.

Hall of Heliod's Generosity is a refrence to Acedemy Ruins(as you said) and Volrath's Stronghold which was was before Acedemy Ruins. There is even a Stronghold mentioned in the flavor text

The last card, Hall of Heliod's Generosity indead is a reference to Academy Ruins, but, those two cards is a reference/cicle to Volrath's Stronghold. And on Rebiuld you can see Mox Sapphire with Volkan Baga art, made for Vintage Masters

The segovian angel art also has been drawn like a tilt-shift lens effect, which is known for making things look miniature!

You can also see Seat of the Synod in the background of the art of Mirrodin Besieged.

i like how the art on segovian angel is also tilt-shifted to make it look smaller.

He forgot to mention that the original art for llanowar elves had one elf but was called elves, so they changed the art to have three elves but it didn't make sense as a 1 Mana 1/1 so llanowar tribe fixes that issue.

While it may be later said for the potential Urza video, his last ability (where you pay 5 to shuffle your library, exile the top card and be able to play said card for free that turn) is Mind's Desire without its Storm component.

You missed one with Segovian Angel. The flavor text references the story that was in the rules for Alpha of two planes-walkers dueling.

Segovian Angel can also giant growth back into Serra angel! Not sure if it fully qualifies as an easter egg, but I found it to be a fun little thing!

Recruit the worthy is more likley a reference to Lab Rat, which is a black version with buyback for 1 more.

I would totally love to have a playmat with Everdream's art. Simply gorgeous.

Mind Rake is also a reference to Mind Rot, which does the same exact thing but without the overload cost.

Also Archmage's Charm is both a reference to Cryptic Command and to the guild, shard, and khan Charm cycles. I'd love it if it were also referencing Archmage Ascension so we could eventually get it as a cycle - Pyromancer's Charm, Beastmaster's Charm, Bloodchief's Charm, etc. But that's just wishing.

Generous gift was also a white elephant reference because it just wastes the receiver's time but might be useful at some point if kept alive.

I started playing in OG Ravnica, which was immediately followed by (Cold Snap) and Time Spiral. So even though i missed all of the references in actual Time Spiral, I am feeling at least SOME of the nostalgia now.

Wall of a thousand cuts have the ability of one well known wall of swords combo rolling stone I assume. I think it was 1 white mana cost spell that was given the ability to a wall to make an attack with it. Cheers m8 I really love your storytelling . Helios from Greece.

Since this is Modern Horizons, it is possible that Rebuild may be a reference to Sram O's / Cheerios deck with the bounce effect and Bonesaw in the background.

Fountain of Ichor also seems to reference Phyrexian Ichor, since the fountain makes Artifact dinos.

The flavortext on Segovian Angel is a reference the first ever mentioned planeswalkers, Worzel and Thomil, who are described briefly by Garfield himself in the Alpha rulebook!

I know there's a ton of story behind Urza, but you didn't mention that the abilities are Dominaria Karn's minus ability, Tolarian Academy (you can add blue = artifacts you control), and Mind's Desire.

The references for bazar trader's flavor have another egg. They are also a mirrored version of squandered recources from visions.
