There is no absolute, theoretical "correct height" except insofar as each person must experiment, trial and error, to see where they are most comfortable. Each individual body dynamics and physiognomies differ. Start with the basics like Craig, then experiment from there to find your "place." I began sitting 4" higher and 6" farther back and my playing improved dramatically. One size only fits all in very rough terms; find where you are most comfortable and have the best mastery. The height at which, viewed from the side, your forearms form a horizontal line (according to Edna Golandsky). How far the bench is from the keyboard also makes a difference to this.

A nutty guy, rather isolated, with overall poor technique, learned from his teacher at his Toronto conservatory, which eventually injured him; piano is a repetitive stress activity. You can't get away with bad elements forever; it's an too oft-told story.

Easy: his choice of chair was WRONG. His bench height was WRONG. And he paid dearly for that terrible choice later in life. Glenn Gould is the perfect example in so many different ways of what NOT TO DO at the piano.

​@@mrsnegy6001Read the booklets from his album releases (The Glenn Gould Collection by SONY). They quote his diaries. He had a lot of health problems since the mid 1970s.

The best bench is made by Hidrau in Spain. I’m not sure this is one, because the Chinese make a cheap knockoff version which is not as good. The Hidrau runs around $700. I’ve had one for years and love it. It can be adjusted immediately without cranking.

It took 15 minutes to set up. The cheaper versions are quite inexpensive, so it’s up to you! It improved my posture and took away back pain I was experiencing with my artist’s bench.

After 15 years piano playing, I eventually came to a point where I raised my seat height about 4 inches and sat back from the keys about 6 inches, meaning my forearm slopes down very slightly, just an inch above elbow to keys. Learned it from Martha Argerich. Takes a lot of experimental effort to find the perfect right height for each individual because we are all unique. Craig's tutorial and a very few others out there are a good place to start, then modify slightly to suit. Too much arguing about opinions.

That is to say "6 inches farther than I was sitting when too close."

@@PIANO_LAB Now that would be an originally great tutorial. The GG cult is active. Very poor posture which got him in the end. GG was a unique and quirky genius, born with unique GG talent. If you are Glenn Gould, nutty Canadian, then you can follow his example and no doubt play like him, which I have no doubt you do. I don't think he would recommend his posture for anyone else. I always wondered how Bill Evans could play with his head hanging down like that; when I studied his life, I found the answer. He was nearly always high on serious drugs. He killed himself with drugs; and left a trail of ruined lives in his wake. Could he play piano? Yes. If you think that's cool, be my guest to hang your head.

@@DavidMiller-bp7et yes its most about the hands. Arms should be in the same vertical position most of the time or atleast when playing scales and arpeggios. Or maybe its just that i have played piano a lot and my shoulder doesnt get tired anymore lol.
