Which Interstate is the weirdest, quirkiest one? While the answer is almost certainly I-70, Todd makes a case for every Interstate being "the weird one." Also, we will be doing our first giveaway contest based on this video! Control City Freak is updated weekly and covers every two digit Interstate Highway in America. I'll be showing control city signs on each 1 and 2 digit (2di) Interstate Highway in the continental United States and will strive to make as complete a record as possible. I'll also be getting into the roadgeek weeds here and there, showing downtown skylines and state border crossings, and making corny jokes. I welcome all to join my geeky tour of every primary Interstate in the country!
All images of roads and signs come from Google Street View unless otherwise specified.

Dude, if you want more viewers, stop being lazy, and omitting a third of the interstate system, in your videos. You didn't even touch on 80, 90, 94, or 69. Let alone the 90 North and South routes And don't say you didn't have time, because you put up very short sections of anything higher than 66. Do better. You're a sham.

I’ll add some Interstate weirdness: I-65 starts in the Central Time Zone, crosses into the Eastern Time Zone, then back into Central Time again! I-90 passes by 4 MLB stadiums: Fenway Park (Red Sox), Progressive Field (Guardians), Guaranteed Rate Field (White Sox), then finally T-Mobile Park (Mariners).

There was talk last fall in Forsyth Co. of getting approval of bringing US 421 between western Winston-Salem and Wilkesboro to interstate standards and designating it a future interstate. Not sure why, as a lot of 421 goes thru rural areas in that stretch. Besides, there's a lot of bridges that would have to be brought up to standard, and Peace Haven Rd and Speer Bridge Rd are the only ones, and Speer Bridge wont be finished for 2 more months.

I-H73 & I-H74 UPDATES: Both highways will use elon musk’s spacex rocket to reach the moon, similar to how US 9 & 10 use ferries. Limon and Lyman will each have their own launch sites, one for I-H73 & one for I-H74, the rockets will each go to the ISS where all passengers will have to get off and board the The 73/74 space shuttle. From there, I-H73 & 74 will continue as one space shuttle to the moon. From there the routes will split up only to meet each other at the American flag.

My laundry list of exit requests for I-41: 1) Exit 113 (especially for southbound) for WI-26. When I lived in Rosendale, this is the exit I would take when coming from Green Bay/Appleton/Oshkosh. Also, for southbound, please mention that if heading to Madison from Green Bay/Appleton/Oshkosh, it's quicker to take WI-26 to US-151 than taking I-41 to US-151 in Fond du Lac. 2) Exit 139 onto WI-15. This is the closest exit to where I live currently. 3) Exit 134b) onto US-10 West. This is the quickest way home for me when I'm in Neenah. 4) Exit 120 (especially for northbound) for US-45 to US-10. Quickest way to Steven's Point/Wausau from Oshkosh is this exit.

Because I-41 is duplexed with US-41 which has its own weird quirks. For example, even though it is a north-south US highway, its starting and endpoints face east and west. I know a lot of people hate on I-41 for its number but I think it is highly appropriate as US-41 breaks a whole lotta rules concerning north/south highways. Despite running between the PA Turnpike and I-80, this segment of I-99 is disconnected from the interstate system. Because of the PTC's aversion to connecting to freeways, I-99 ends shortly before you reach the turnpike and you have to go on a surface road before you hit the turnpike. This has existed ever since the US 220 bypass of Bedford was completed long before I-99. At the north end, the freeway portion ends about a half-mile from I-80. Though, PennDOT is working on a direct interchange on this end. I grew up in Bloomsburg, PA, so having it as a control city on I-80 is nice. The problem with I-80 in PA is that it doesn't pass by any city with over 50,000 people. Hazleton is the largest one mentioned with approximately 30,000 residents. State College is not a control city but has 40,000 plus the Penn State students. Really, the most logical choices are Ohio and NYC. But, I guess PennDOT wanted to have PA control cities. BTW, I-80 near Youngstown, OH has NYC as a control city which 80 does not quite reach and totally ignores PA and NJ! Also, even though mileage-based numbering has been used on 80 since the late 2000s, I had over 30 years of the sequential system. Even now, I still remember more of the sequential numbers than the mileage ones. Even in areas that have always been mileage-based, I have trouble remembering exit numbers. The ones that I remember the best are the 1 and 2 digit ones. To be a little fair to the PTC, the part of the turnpike where the I-95 now exists was completed in 1954 which is two years before the interstate highway act was passed. That’s no excuse. In Wisconsin, that sign with 41-43-894 may have been a carbon-copy replacement. I-894 existed long before 43, let alone 41. With 41 now fully multiplexed with 894, the 894 designation could be dropped.

The weirdest interstate interchange to me is Atlanta 75/85 split. Many lanes, including HOV lanes that continue through to 75. It’s one of the busiest I guess. But the crazy thing is when it was built they had 75 which goes to Chattanooga on the right which looks like it’s going to Greenville by sense of direction and 85 which to Greenville looks like it would go to Chattanooga. Then in the 1980s when they rebuilt it completely and had a chance to fix it they left it the same confusing way. The overhead signs toward Greenville have arrows that are about a 30° angle like I’ve never seen anywhere. I’ve been going that way 59 years and nearly make the mistake any time I go a few years without going through there. Also originally 75 didn’t have nearly the capacity of 85, but now they’re north busy 24/7. Anyway I know they will never fix it now.

I personally have also disliked ordinal/sequential exit numbering ever since I got my first taste of what it was like in Georgia on I-85; I thought, when I saw Exit 59, it would be a quick little jaunt through Georgia, and then into Alabama; nope! Exit 59 was the last of 59 sequential exits for 180 miles. It was the same in Florida, when I was on I-95 in the Sunshine State; I saw Exit 130, and did not realize that Florida actually runs for 380 miles. Fortunately, both saw the light, and both are mileage-based now.

I think that I-238 in California is weird for one mile, it should have stayed as CA-238 in Ashland between I-880 and I-580, and besides there is no parent of I-38. In Western Kentucky Parkway it should be I-50 or I-54 which connect between the junction of I-69 & I-169 near Nortonville Kentucky and I-65 in Elizabethtown Kentucky for 95 miles instead of I-569. @ControlCityFreak What in your opinion, is the least irregular two-digit interstate? (Can’t say normal since none of them are!) For me, most irregular are both I-86s, “I-87”, I-97, and I-99. Solutions to delete these: I-86 East: Make it into a turnpike. I-86 West: Auxiliary route of I-15 or I-84. “I-87” and I-97. Have 97 extended north up MD I-895 to its junction with 95, and south over the bay bridge, through the eastern shore around Salisbury, where there will be a spur north to Wilmington DE, then south over the Chesapeake Bridge/Tunnel, have 97 be concurrent with 64 until it hits US 13, have 97 follow/replace “87” until Raleigh, or send 97 south to Wilmington, Myrtle Beach, and Charleston, replacing 140 and 526, with “87” and 587 acting as new spur routes of 97. I-99: Make it into a turnpike like 86 east. Also congrats on finishing the series! I have been watching your content since I-81, and it was great watching your channel’s evolution over this compilation!

Too bad you didn’t come through Kansas City because we have four major interstates that converge in what is known locally as the “Exit Alphabet Soup” exits of the downtown Kansas City, Mo. loop. What a mess that is if you are not from the Kansas City area. The downtown loop tends to shoot people in all kinds of new and interesting directions they never knew existed. Topeka, Wichita, Des Moines, St Louis, St Joseph and Joplin, what a choice of places to go, not to mention all the local exits in the downtown loop. It’s funny, but they never tell you how to get to the Airport from downtown.

We are New Hampshire, Live Free or Die. We don't mandate seatbelt usage nor motorcycle helmet usage. What makes you think that we are going to follow most of the rest of the country and change to milage based exits? I don't believe Vermont nor Massachusetts does milage based exits either. You HAVE to drive through Franconia Notch in NH it is absolutely gorgeous. It's one one of my favorite places in the state. What you will really find weird are the rope barriers blocking the shoulder. Franconia Notch is the gateway to some of the best hiking in the state and people have a habit of parking on the side of the road. The forget that it is I93.

The next road that should be done is US Route 1. Think I-95 was fun, US 1 is even cooler. You could even do a special version with just the Overseas Highway in the Florida Keys. You could spend a month or longer on US 1. Please do that. Love this channel and love this series.

You could do US Route 41. Not only is it the second longest north/south US highway, it starts out at its northern end as a cul-de-sac in a clearing east of Copper Harbor, Michigan and ends in downtown Miami. So it starts/ends at its northern end going east/west and it ends at its southern end going east/west. In the 1990's its southern end was in Miami Beach at A1A, which meant that it actually went NORTH on US 1 for a short distance before crossing over to Miami Beach via the MacArthur Causeway. Logically US 41 should not end in Florida at all but Mississippi or Louisiana. After taking an extremely circuitous route through Michigan's Upper Peninsula, it then goes through Wisconsin, Illinois, and then Indiana where it takes more or less a straight route south through western Kentucky until the Tennessee line where it turns abruptly to the southeast and maintains that bearing until Chattanooga where it again turns to the south. Once in Florida it is back to the same sort of tricks it played in Michigan's UP, wandering all over the place until finally heading east on the Tamiami Trail through the Everglades and then downtown Miami (or Miami Beach, there is some dispute over US 41's official southern ending). I grew up running around on the north end of 41 and in 1991 decided to drive it from Indiana to Florida. I think it is safe to say that I am rather fond of this highway and think it deserves a lot better recognition than it gets.

Great channel! Here are a few other odd quirks of some interstates that I know off the top of my head... I 40 has some unsigned entrance and exit points controlled by stop signs near the Tennessee North Carolina state border in the mountain pass. I 85 crosses over itself in North Carolina near a veterans memorial rest area. I 85 also has 2 full freeway business routes. One in Spartanburg South Carolina and one in Greensboro North Carolina. Both were once mainline I 85 but were bypassed. I 585 in Spartanburg South Carolina is not only one of a few orphaned 3 digit interstates, but it also has at grade intersections controlled by traffic lights. There is a state freeway in South Carolina that is meant to become part I 73 for Myrtle Beach. It will probably never connect to North Carolina because of lack of funding. Keep up the great content! Maybe do a "Todd Ranks the Limons/Lymans" April fool's video?

Regarding the "End I-8" sign -- Technically, it's the only interstate in California that ends at a level intersection with a surface street (Sunset Cliffs Blvd) rather than flowing into another highway. Even I-10 ends where the ramps to Lincoln Blvd split off from the Santa Monica Freeway. That freeway continues west for another half-mile or so as CA-1 before flowing into PCH. (Also, the section of I-8 west of I-5 was originally numbered as CA-109, so it wasn't intended to be part of the Interstate system.)

I lived in southern California from October 1970 until November 1971. First in Anaheim and then in Oxnard while stationed at NAS Los Alamitos, and then NAS Pt. Mugu. Many of the freeways in the Los Angeles area were originally designated California highways. Since I moved away two of these are now designated as interstate highways. The Long Beach freeway and the Harbor freeways are now I-110 and I-710. I guess it was changed to get federal funds for improvements.
