I don’t know how much Reggae you’ve listened to, but I babysat a collection of almost 200 Reggae albums in the summer of 1999 and Copeland has a ton of Reggae influence in his style. Like, he’ll do things that are not influenced by Reggae, it’s straight up Reggae. Quarters on the bass, and some off beat, funky but consistent rim for 2-3 measures, even if he goes slight off-off beat, because that’s Reggae - they can’t help themselves either. I would say he takes the Reggae influence to the Police by adding extra spaces in the Reggae groove, where the typical response is to add notes. It’s what separates those who can read music and count from people like me, lol.
