Metroid is truly a great franchise. It deserves to leave that niche status behind.

Don't forget that NES Metroid came with a paper map of all areas in the box, so the idea was for you to map your way through Zebes on your own. I feel like that's kind of an important part that tends to get overlooked when talking about NES Metroid

I am almost 40 years old, and owned an NES as a child. I loved classic Metroid and revisited it just last year for my umteenth playthrough, and I still loved it. I absolutely believe it holds up. It is so fundamentally playable, which is not something you can say about a lot of older games from that time. Many NES, Master System, C64, Atari 8-bit, etc etc games are physically taxing to play if you go back to them, but Metroid is not like that at all. Especially if you play it on modern hardware like virtual console or NES Mini and can save state and rewind and the like. Yes, it is crazy hard if you try to rush through it, and yes having a map open (I used Nintendo Power as a child) next to you makes the navigation easier, but I'll still fight to the death over it being every bit as good as Super Mario or Legend of Zelda. I actually find Zelda II and Mega Man 3 to be a far more frustrating games and they're held in classic status. Metroid 1 needs to get some love. And this, btw, is from someone who played Super Metroid (one of my favorite games of all time) and then went back to play Metroid 1 afterwards.

Metroid was nuts back in the 80s. It was basically impossible to complete at my age back then, but we loved playing it. I’m 100% with you on the top 2.

I am relatively new to the Metroid series I got Super Metroid on Wii and had a tough time then I played zero mission which Is a much more beginner friendly game and allowed me to go back and not only play Super Metroid but also Fusion and Dread

I've yet to play the other Metroid Prime games, I played the MP remaster for the first time last year and thought it was a really splendid experience. Other than that, I played Super Metroid, Fusion and Zero Mission, the games were great fun. Dread seems really good, but I genuinely can't get over the fact that there is a creepy death machine stalking you all the time, that is the stuff that fuels 95% of my nightmares. While I'm not very experienced with the franchise, I'm still incredibly curious to see where Nintendo will take MP4. Keep up the great work and God bless you all.

Metroid Other M was mistranslated. I don't know why people ignore that. Game itself is way more fun, than Hunters or any others low-tier Metroid games. I'm defenitely dissagree with this choice. Other M in my Top 3 Metroid games.

How we played games in the 80s without map and everything? Well first thing often maps did exist for these games dans came in the box with the game. Yeah, an actual paper map. Otherwise we just had to search, press on, create our own maps if needed. Be resourceful in a nutshell, which a lot of people today seems to utterly lack. Today seems like younger people wants to play hide & seek and be told where the other person is gonna hide even before he start counting...

I loved the original Metroid playing it as a kid in the 80s. Other than Zelda, not many games let you go wherever you wanted back then and the feel of being isolated and exploring an alien planet alone was amazing. Being able to go left, up, and down as well as right was rare at the time. In fact, my wife told me that when she played it as a kid, she never got past the first screen because she went right, got stuck, and never thought to go left because you only ever went right in games she had played. As for maps, I, and most other kids I knew, kept a pad of graph paper and pencils next to our NES to draw maps, take notes, and record passwords. I still enjoy the gameplay, but it is unplayable to me due to restarting with 35 health regardless of how much health you have.

Zero Mission was the first Metroid game I’ve played start to finish, and I enjoyed it so much I played Metroid Prime, then I really got into Metroid. (BTW, during the Wii U era.)

U talking about Metroid prime 3 trying to compete with halo relates to how I felt playing Metroid prime remastered for my first time ever playing the series. Prime was the closest I've felt to halo since playing the franchise as a kid. Really hope we get prime remastered 2

People miss the point that in Corruption, the Phazon was becoming more known to everyone in the galaxy, the federation has always had their sights on the space pirates, and the pirates were using phazon so the federation responded and samus saw an opportunity to get information from them about all that. The phazon was a huge threat, everyone was involved, it had nothing to do with Halo, Retro Studios did a good job on that game, they weren’t interested in Halo.

I have been only played 2 Metroid games Super Metroid on Super Nintendo mini and Metroid Prime Remastered on Nintendo Switch. In my opinion Super Metroid is the worst experience of Metroid for me but Metroid Prime Remastered is the greatest Metroid game ever made. Metroid games I haven't never played but I want to are Metroid Prime 1 and 2 what I hope to see Remastereds too or Nintendo Gamecube to Nintendo Switch Online System, Metroid Samsus Return on 3DS and Metroid Dread on Nintendo Switch. Defienitily Metroid game what I want to play the most is Metroid Samus Return on 3DS what is in my opinion the best 2D Metroid game. Nestroid I think the top 8 games can be arranged in any order and it would still be a solid list. Those are the games I feel best represent the franchise and are very close to each other in terms of how much I like them. On some days I'd think of Prime 3 as better than Prime, or Zero Mission as better than Fusion but this is about the average. Except for the last 3 I love all the Metroid games even if they might have some flaws. Not ranking Pinball because it is way too good for a list like this :P

I played Super Metroid as my 1st Metroid game and honestly... Meh i prefered a lot Megaman X. Godamn... I was so wrong 😅 Now i prefer a lot Super Metroid, what a masterpiece. I was too young to appreciate the level design. My first Prime was the third (i had no GC) and i absolutely loved it. To this day i made every main Metroid excepted Prime 2 (and spin-off), i love this franchise. I hope a remaster for Prime 2 and Prime 3 since i prefer Prime to Classics.

If Prime 4 does better you'll have the 2 best selling games come out recently, a (pardon the pun) prime time to capitalize. They should release all the Prime games (hopefully) but I also wouldn't mind seeing the previous 4 2D games redone in the Dread engine. I imagine it as if it takes place after Dread, on her way to where 6 takes place, Samus remembers her previous adventures, recounting everything she went through to that point. But anyways, more Metroid, it doing better, is just good

One of the things that I liked about MP3...was the motion controls! 🤷‍♂️ I felt it was one of the few Wii games that used it successfully.

Also, the first 7 on my list are nearly equal other than Echoes, which is absolutely the best. Other M is different, and it had obvious flaws, but the good far outwighs the bad IMO. I actually think 3rd person is the ideal style for the series vs FPS or 2D. If executed better, a third person Metroid could absolutely be the best game the series has ever seen.

I have replayed Dread three times, more than any other video game. Might be my favorite game of all time.

My personal ranking: Federation Force < Other M < Hunters < Samus Returns < Dread < Metroid II < NES < Prime 3 < Zero Mission < Prime 1 < AM2R < Prime 2 < Super < Fusion - Not saying Fusion is objectively the best, but it was a very formative game for me and I adore its feeling of mystery and tension. - Having replayed Prime 2 and Prime 1 Remastered recently, my opinion of Prime 2 went up and Prime 1 went down. I just love the aesthetic and puzzle box design of Prime 2, whereas I found Prime 1 a lot more tedious to replay - I've never been that big a fan of MercurySteam's games. They're fun action-wise (especially Dread), but to me they're severely lacking in other design aspects. It feels like they don't really understand the soul of Metroid series, stuff like atmosphere, exploration, tension, and discovery. I know that my opinion on Dread is an outlier, though. - The NES Metroid is pretty underrated, imo. It has some terrible parts, no doubt, but it creates this minimalistic alien atmosphere that's truly unique. The tension I felt beating Tourian as a kid with no save states is still a high I've rarely felt in any other game.

I’d numb other M from an 11 to more of a 10.5. I really liked the combat and movement and agree it would benefit from a better control scheme. I wouldn’t mind if a new Metroid game with other m’s controls/combat.

I'm surprised Nintendo hasn't done a remaster/remake on the Switch for: Metroid Zero Mission Metroid Samus Returns Super Metroid Metroid Fusion ...and a Switch port of Metroid: Other M.

I love Metroid so seeing this made me happy! My list is honestly quite diffeent from yours, but aside from Metroid 2 ive beaten and enjoyed the others several times (albeit Metroid and Super the least for things like aging poorly in Metroid's case and how impossibly miserable Super is to 100 percent since the game doesnt keep track of when you collect an item in a room). I do feel not as good towards Echoes and Dread compared to you (Echoes sky temple keys are somehow worse than the chozo artifacts, one way portals and beam ammo sucks, and poor visibility in the dark world makes it a pain to to traverse at times along with there being too much waiting in light bubbles due to the health drain. Dread and Fusion's Adam segments not being skippable makes repeats rather annoying since it breaks the pace, and honestly i dont like how Samus' character was presented in Dread compared to Fusion, plus the game handles the endings badly and the finale felt very rushed), but I still consider them great games that I revisit. Prime is near perfect with the only real issue being how bad some of the backtracking can get, and Zero Mission is short because its a remake of the very simple first game but Samus has never felt better to control for me. Dread improved the usability of the speed booster but also has by far the worst activation controls

Other M is crazy underrated (except the first person segments). It’s an excellent Megaman X game, but just doesn’t play like what you’d expect a Metroid game to play as. And that’s okay. It’s different and fun, and I’d take that over Prime 2 any day. It’s also the best looking game on the Wii

As some who doesn’t really play Metroid games The only ones that interests me are Super Dread And maybe the prime remake, but there isn’t any advertisement for them Put her face everywhere, you need real ads in the real world

There is more to like about other M. Sure the story telling is messy But has good atmosphere, epic bosses and decent control movement. In my opinion its better than Federation Force.

Really good list and I agree with just about everything except Prime 1. The backtracking and map design killed that game for me tbh
