The hate on MK4 is SO unfair, given many of the staples of Mortal Kombat started with that game, including interactive stages, bone-breaking specials, visible move lists, training modes and even the multi-layered towers. We wouldn't have the huge titles of today if it weren't for Mortal Kombat 4.

I like the nrs games and their gameplay, but the storyline in each game is a mess everytime, and they keep rebooting the story. The Midway games had good stories but the gameplay was messy. I wish one day they would make a balance between story and gameplay.

You know that's a fair list that I can't argue with, for me personally I do like Shaolin Monks, Deception & MK11 the most as their mostly my favorites. 1. Shaloin Monks was a true adventure game that I played on PS2 back in the day. 2. Deception was one i really do like for its other single player mode with Puzzle Kombat & Chess Kombat. And 3. MK11 while not the greatest in NRS lineup I still think it relatively fun to play and has a good lineup of characters especially guest characters featuring Cary Hiroyuki-Tagawa & Christopher Lambert reprising their roles from the 1st movie that hit me with nolstagia of why I love this series.

Honestly mythologies needs a “sequel” based on the new timeline for any of the characters or based on one of the endings of mk Armageddon.

MKX is my absolute favorite, i love how brutal, serious and impactful the fights are, the designs are also great for (almost) all of them, it also introduced Takeda, Triborg and Tremor, the coolest characters of the franchise!

I truly believe that 1997 was the worst year for mk. The sub zero mythologies game came out, which obviously is one of the more hated mk games. Also, that mortal kombat annihilation movie came out. Great video btw!

Great list. I think the best MK games are MK2, UMK3/Trilogy, Deception, and MK9. I feel like they were perfectly balanced with a great story, characters, and fatalities. My personal favorites have always been MK2 and MK Trilogy. I guess if I had a pick a #1 it would be Mortal Kombat Trilogy since it has more characters and stages. It's a much better MK Armageddon IMO. Those games also have Shao Kahn as the final boss, and he will always be the best final MK boss! Then Deception has a great story, Konquest mode, the stage death traps, Chess Kombat, and especially bringing back characters we hadn't seen in a while like Jade, Sindel, Nightwolf, and Kabal. The Dragon King was also a great final boss as well and I'm still hoping they bring him back in the next game. The worst games for me are the original MK3 and MK4. MK3's roster is so bland and disappointing. I still remember when the game first came out basically being like "WTF is this?" I was extremely disappointed seeing many characters from MK2 not return and seeing a lot of other characters I didn't know. Don't get me wrong, I do think the Cyber Ninjas, Sindel, Sheeva, Kabal, and Nightwolf were the best original creations to come out of MK3 but it was just blah at first. Then of course everyone rages that Scorpion wasn't in the original MK3. That's no big deal to me considering besides that game, he has literally been in every single MK game (While some characters are rarely seen or forgotten) It's not a big deal lol. UMK3 is what they should of came out with first. MK Armageddon is a bittersweet game. I love that EVERYONE shows up in it and the Konquest mode is nice (Not as good as Deception's Konguest though) but they dropped the ball on everything else outside of that. Especially not giving everyone unique fatalities. I still hope they bring Taven back, I see potential with him and it's really crappy they threw his storyline in the trash by writing him off and giving Blaze's power to Shao Kahn. They made his entire quest pointless. Then games like MKX, MK11, and MK1 (2023) just keep regurgitating the same thing with rebooting the storyline in worse ways over and over again. MK9 has been the best NRS game with the rebooted storyline and fatalities. The others have been lazy and messy when it comes to that IMO. When it comes to Mk1 though I do love the fatalities, them finally putting some respect on Baraka and Reptile's name, and all the endings apparently and finally being canon! Oh, I also don't get why they stopped doing The Krypt with the newer games. That was the best thing about the second generation MK games. Also glad you brought up the death traps list still coming, I didn't know if that was forgotten, cancelled, etc. but still looking forward to it lol.

I like this narrator. I was in college when Deadly Alliance came out, and I played it a great deal with my friends as well. My older friends bought the original MK1 for Sega Genesis when I was 8 years old, and my parents let me go over their house to play it. We would play Tommy Lasorda baseball as well. Pretty cool video overall.

My favorite will always be Deception. It had the best game modes, best story, best stages, death traps, no overbloated Krypt. I think it also did an excellent job with the roster.

This might be a hot-take, but I hate what they did to Reptile in MK1. In MK9 and MKX, he was pretty much the only true non-human, IMO, (Well, actually, MKX had Alien and Predator, but that's not the point) and I really liked the true reptilian take on him especially since it helped him stand out among the other races, that always had a somewhat human-esque appearance. ...And then they runed him by mmaking him a human shapeshifter. Sure, his reptile form is cool, but now he has that human element that makes him feel WAY less creative and took away from him what helped him stand out so much. In a day and age where EVERY FRICKEN sympathetic character needs to look like a human or have a human form, this really grinds my misanthropic gears.

Sadly, the art style and camera choices on Fatalities repelled me from MKX. MK1's Invasion is not only repetitive and tedious but it's also tedious and repetitive. MK9 is fantastic, save for the waistlines of just about every kharacter.

Hottake but i honestly prefer vanilla mk3 over umk3 because the ai in single player is way more tolerable and it has those secret fights with smoke and noob saibot (aka black kano). Sure you could make the argument that umk3 is the better multiplayer game because of its bigger roster but you minus well just play trilogy if thats the case. Then again this opinion might be a little biased because cyrax is my favorite character and hes playable in all versions of mk3. (And he apparently plays better in vanilla mk3).

I would have put MK1 way lower down the list. The core gameplay is good, sure, and the Kameo system is nice (for the most part), but the game has a ton of problems that just drags it down. MK1 is so ridiculously monetized to the point where it's just downright predatory. The game nickel & dime's you around every corner. The costume designs are by far the ugliest of any MK game ever. I don't know what the developers were thinking, but the costume designs in MK1 are shockingly bad. There are also characters missing from the main roster that should have been in the game. How can they do a reboot without Sonya, Kano, Goro, and Jax? It's especially dumb that they left out Sonya, since she is the original MK female character. The game is also extremely lacking in single player content compared to the other NRS games, and what little single player content the game has is not very good at all, with the main single player mode (Invasions) being boring, dull, and frustrating to play. The story mode also has issues. The tournament part of the story was way too short, and it's dumb that they pull a bait & switch near the end of the story where they bring the whole alternate timelines and multiverses nonsense back. MK1 is also very lacking in online features and functionality. And, I can't stress this enough, I HATE how everyone looks in the game. Not because of their character models but because of the ugly costume designs. Almost every character in the game looks like they belong in a circus. The costume designs in MK1 are terrible. I also hate some of the changes they made with the MK1 reboot. Such as Johnny Cage not having his green energy powers any more, Tarkatans no longer being a race but rather a disease (WTF?), Raiden now being mortal, the whole thing with Kuai Liang now being Scorpion. Also Smoke having the dumbest looking hairstyle in the history of dumb looking hairstyles. And what's with all the open toed shoes and pointy shoes in the game? Does Ed Boon have a foot fetish? It's also completely unacceptable how much storage space the game requires. 140GB for a fighting game??? As a PS5 player I don't appreciate the game taking up almost half of the storage space on the system. I can't imagine what it must be like for Xbox Series S players, who have even less storage. I don't want to have to buy a super expensive SSD or delete all the other games on my system just because modern day game developers are too lazy to compress their games. No fighting game should be that stupidly large.

Mk9 was the only MK game I played competitively....so many great memories. Stopped playing MK after that, but I was a big fan of the 3d games and MK3 and MK4 being my first mortal kombats. No, I never played MK Vs DC haha
