Man people keep saying they don’t know why the Hawks moved on from Carrol but it should be obvious, he’s a defensive coach who’s had a bottom five defense for nearly a decade, just can’t do that 🤷🏽‍♂️

I really like the Seattle move and understand the Pete Carroll firing/departure. The team is going to need a new identity as it's building up after the mini rebuild post Wilson trade. Carrol is 72 and probably going to retire anyways in the next 3-4 years anyways which would be right in the middle of a long term team identity change. With the team potentially drafting a new QB in the next 1-2 years it makes a lot more sense to start the coaching change now while you're in that drafting building process, instead of in 2-3 years when you just got your new assets and are developing them. It wouldn't make sense to draft guys Pete wants on his defense, then hand it over to someone else who then has to make use of a different group of assets than they're used to/want to use. I'm sad to see the way it ended, I'm a big Seahawks fan, love Pete Carroll, and am a fan of defenses so like his style as well. But I can't say that I'm not excited for this move.

I'm excited about the Panthers hire. tepper finally realized he sucks at hiring and hired a group with a good track record to help him. I know some Panthers fan sites were complaining they hired too quickly (whatever that means) but I view it as the Panthers picked someone that checked the boxes, comes with a great background and honestly was the best option (they were never going to get Jim h and I think tepper was smart enough to know he couldn't control bill b)
@unc54

The fact that Ben Johnson ended up staying only makes the Panthers decision to hire "quickly" look better. Otherwise we'd have to panic hire someone, which I have a suspicion might have happened last year given Tepper's alleged affinity for Ben Johnson

@@DanielleBaum That situation was so bad that it made Reich look like he aged about 15 years in the half season he was our coach. I don't doubt that it had to do with how overly involved Tepper is with making player personnel decisions. If Tepper wants a successful team, he has to learn to let the coaches and gm he hired make the player based decisions.

One thing you didn't mention about Canales is that Tepper used Sportsology to help him hire a HC. The last first-time HCs that Sportsology hired were Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay. It doesn't mean anything for Canales but it shows that Sportsology can find good guys to promote to HC.

As a Falcons fan, i know the Falcons are gonna Falcon. Another overrated coach fans pin their hopes on cuz of the confirmation bias. His resume is trash. if he needed the players, what makes anyone think it will happen with this administration?
@kylescott9529
@kylescott9529 4 ай бұрын
To not hide any bias, I say all of this as a Commanders fan. Harbaugh: Jim is basically at the top of the “hot/crazy” scale. He will bring them to relevancy. But he will act fucking batshit crazy while doing it. And he may not elect to stay there long. Morris: I think he will do good things for the Falcons. He is well liked by pretty much every player he’s ever encountered. I think Tampa was a no win situation for him. He was WAAAYYYYY too young and inexperienced and those teams were not set up well. I think he’s had some time to mature and he should do some good in Atlanta. Canales: Im not feeling this one. I don’t think he’s ready to be a head coach. I think this is Tepper knowing he can’t do better. And honestly I think this is the only place he would have gotten a job. Speaking of Tepper. It doesn’t matter who coaches that team; so long as he’s owner they’re doomed. Take it as someone who suffered under Snyder. Canales might breathe some life into Young. But I don’t see that team going anywhere. McDonald: I can see the logic just because he’s as energetic as Carrol was, but you’re going the opposite direction in age. I think he’s gonna love their home field advantage. Quinn: You’re not gonna like my response to this, and I might sound like a homer, but I’ve warmed up to him. Admittedly this is an advantage of following the team. None of the main guys reporting for the team were actually pushing the “Johnson -> Washington” line. None. Only National media people (except for Shefter which should say something). Johnson was A top candidate. But not THE candidate. He, Quinn, McDonald, Glenn, and Weaver were all really well liked. Quinn apparently annihilated the interviews. While Johnson withdrew and McDonald went to Seattle, they were actually quite fine with this. I know that’s hard to imagine. But I can kinda understand why. 1. You might not want to pair a first time head coach with a first time GM and a first time owner. That has all the makings for stuff to blow up. Somebody in the room needs experience. 2. Quinn is not Rivera. Rivera immediately jumped from Carolina to Washington and did not remotely reflect on why he failed at the end in Carolina and just hired mostly people that worked on the same staff in Carolina that failed. The same actions led to the same outcome. Quinn spent three years in Dallas re-establishing his career. He took an absolutely crap Dallas defense and made it top 5 three years straight and led the NFL in takeaways each season. Since we hired him, he’s put together a pretty overall great and diverse staff. Which was a criticism a lot of our fans had about hiring McDonald; how would he do hiring a staff when he’s only ever worked for the Ravens? Rivera also had final say on all player personnel decisions. Quinn had some of that in Atlanta and failed too. Here he will not have that power; it all goes to Adams Peters. I’m sure as a Pats fan, you are aware of how the “Coach is the GM” model doesn’t really work particularly well. Belichick used to be the exception, but towards the end of his time it became clear that he wasn’t particularly good at being a GM; Brady just covered a lot of that up. 3. Until his final year, Quinn was overall really successful in Atlanta. He was not the only reason the Falcons blew that lead. Arguably the biggest culprit for that debacle has managed to take the 49ers to the Super Bowl twice in the last five years. Even after Shanahan left, they still made the playoffs the following year. It’s just unfortunate he never had a great replacement for Shanahan long term and that’s what really did him in especially as his defense started to regress. I’m giving him a chance. He could bomb; but I like what I see so far.

And Kyle did play a huge role in why they blown lead. I live in Florida so to hear someone have a good take about our team is so nice to hear, Thank you.

I still don’t think I’d hire a defensive head coach just because of offensive continuity. Even for a team like the Bills, who got a really good head coach in Sean McDermott, that just means to maximize their franchise QB they’re going to do to constantly be cycling through OCs. Ken Dorsey didn’t work out, and if Joe Brady continues to look better, he’s going to get hired away and then they’re back at square one.

The defense was the doing of Patrick Graham. Yes he failed as a HC for the Giants but he has been one of the best defensive minds even through that, and was a competent offense away from getting that team to compete before he was fired (which is why Daboll overachieved originally). This year, a lot of Graham’s guys left NY and the Giants defense sucked for the most part. And now he’s doing the EXACT same thing in LV, and if he manages to churn out a good defense (despite that it’s quite literally Crosby and no one else) he will be a HC in 25

Pete’s thing was more of him being stubbornly stuck in his ways of this is how things are done, will be done and there isnt any other way they’re going to be done. The offense severely stepped back from the previous year the team had. The defense was the same crappy defense it had been and when trying something new he refused to give up parts of his scheme so melded it with the new things. Players started checking out and making business decisions trying to avoid hitting, which is a first ive seen under pete so the time to leave was close. Tbh i also checked out half way through the season because there was a long trend through the whole year where it was clear things werent changing and the results were predictable so watching was a of a waste of time. very excited for the new higher and the hawks swinging for the fences, i think they’ve come at it from a very smart standpoint and cant wait.

I was so thankful Atlanta didn't hire Bill B that I don't even care how things turn out with the new guy. Any front office with half a brain knows that Bill B is done as a HC. The only reason he still wants to coach is to break Shulu's record. Also thrilled to see Quinn gone from Dallas and to one of their most hated rivals to boot. Given the fact that Dak, Mike and Jerry are still there to effe it all up it's a tiny win but it's still a win.

I believe that Dan Quinn will be more successful in his second time around. After the fiasco in Atlanta he talked to many players and his old staff asking why he failed. He took those lessons to heart. The staff he's brought in are diverse and successful coaches and teachers. My only worries are the OC and OL coaches. Hopefully, Anthony Lynn will ensure that Kingsbury runs more and puts the QB under center more.

Do you honestly think he's going to talk to the Dallas Defense and ask why he gave up 40+ points to Green Bay? Dan Quinn changes up his entire strategy that he used all season in the most critical part of the season.

I feel like a lot of people forgot that Eric Bieniemy was on Washington's staff as the OC and could've easily become their Coach if they wanted him to. I know he's 54 but the guy has never had a chance at it even but he coached Patrick Mahomes to 3 Super Bowl appearances and two MVP's. I can't believe he got completely overlooked for that job.

I remember people speculating that Dallas was going to hire Bellechick, but I never believed Bill would go there... Can you IMAGINE him butting heads with Jerry for control behind the scenes? Even if I thought a team was a good fit for him, he's too used to being the main man behind the curtain. A team would have to be comfortable handing him full control.

Commanders had several options they wanted, but got turned down each time. After Ben Johnson turned them, they called and made an offer to Mike McDonald. He picked Seattle. Their third option was Bobby Slowik, but he went back to Houston too. Dan Quinn was literally a fourth option.

The Commanders back up plan if Ben Johnson didn't bite was Mike Macdonald. But Seattle boxed them out there. Both the Seahawks and Commanders were gunning for Johnson/Macdonald. When Johnson chose to stay in Detroit, Washington was unable wrangle Macdonald before Seattle did.

I think that the Jerod Mayo process was better than you think. The reason why Mayo was the written successor to Belichick was because he had other opportunities that he turned down because the Patriots promised him that he'd be the next head coach. If Mayo didn't have that in his contract, he'd already have been gone. The Patriots liked Mayo well enough to put that succession plan into writing. Following through on that was the smart thing to do. All sorts of questions about the stability of the Patriots without Belichick would be swirling around them if it ever got out that Mayo was the written successor and they went with someone else. The Patriots were planning for a future without Belichick, it just came sooner than everyone expected.

I agree that Dan Quinn isn’t the best coaching option. But he isn’t calling any of the plays. I have faith in our coordinators to do that stuff well. Quinn’s job is to be a motivator and attract high-level players to the commanders. He is a very respected and player friendly coach, which gives me hope it might not be all bad.

While true, the point stands that having your top options be literally the two most sought after candidates in the cycle was dumb-especially if you're only going to excessively (at least publicly) court one, making clear the other is the backup. You don't do that when his phone is ringing off the hook too. I gotta say, it's a fumble that was unbecoming of all the hype Peters had as a GM hire.

@@natem1579 well there weren’t many teams left that still needed a coach by the time he was available and it’s not like he chose a different team he just stayed where he was and if you really want a guy why would you not try everything to get him? Most were saying that Ben and Mike were the top 2 options and we offered to them both and they both declined, he did everything he could to get one of the top candidates it just didn’t work. They still liked Dan Quinn, there were rumors about Dan being the guy before the playoffs started. Adam has still done a fantastic job so far in my book.

Hot take. The commanders getting Quinn is NOT a bad hire. I think the short term stability is something this team desperately needs, and no matter who they picked up, this was never going to be a team that could contend. Building a culture of not being garbage is the best case scenario for them, and Quinn is probably the best bet for that out of the coaches that would’ve realistically considered going to DC.
@troycooke5590
@troycooke5590 Ай бұрын
Hahaha the guy who got too much credit for legion of boom, when he took over as DC was the year they lost and clearly Gus wasn’t good either. All Pete and the talent. Then he gets a great falcons roster. 28-3, rest is history. Flames out. And after the cowboys get dismantled by GB he’s a good hire? We have a track record on his team building. He’s clearly not a good DC just been lucky with talent from other good team builders. And it’s an offense driven league. If you couldn’t land Ben Johnson, why not go for Mike Lafleur or Frank Smith? Or big splash Lincoln Riley. Dabo is known for his positivity and team building. Oh wait, all these guys are under contract. So you have to pay their employer when you poach them. No Quinn was hired because the NFC east is obsessed with each other and he had a 1 year 5mil deal that had expired. Bet Jerry wishes he had that money back to spend on any FA. My mom could’ve coached that defense with all that talent. Cold cut take, Quinn will be tossed in the trash like I do the turkey I forget about every week by 2026 after never winning his division or having a top 12 defense.

@@troycooke5590 I think this team benefits from the stability of being mid. Quinn I would say is NOT good enough to take this team to the playoffs. But I think he is good enough to not be garbage. I think the commies need the consistency of that bc so far they’ve been high and low. They’ve been a bottom 5 team every year and then boom outta nowhere they have a good season, flame out, lose all their players who get overvalued bc of that one good season, and are ass again. The consistent mediocrity that Quinn brings I would argue would benefit this team more than anything else. I’m NOT arguing Quinn is a good coach. I’m saying he was the least bad option. I don’t see why lafluer would go to DC, he’s HC for the packers and they’re a good team. I don’t see why Frank smith would leave Miami for DC. Lincoln Riley is a major question mark. Urban Meyer was one of the best college coaches in the ncaa. Terrible nfl coach. We have no idea how Riley would perform. With Quinn, I think we’re basically guaranteed mediocrity. They won’t win their division. No coach can bring this team to a division title rn. They won’t make the playoffs. They won’t have a top 10 defense. But they won’t have a bottom 10 defense either. They’ll be somewhere in the middle. They won’t be having top 5 picks every year. They’ll pick somewhere between 7-15 every year. (Barring trades)
