Ahead of MLB at Rickwood Field, SFG Productions traveled down to Birmingham, Alabama to learn more about the history of the Negro Leagues and the impact of baseball on the community. The San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals will play at Rickwood Field on June 20th, 2024 as they celebrate the legacy of the Negro Leagues, including its legendary players like Willie Mays.

This video was beautifully presented and I'm so glad I watched it. The love put into honoring the Negro League, it's players and this field...just wonderful. I didn't want it to end. Loved the Dusty choice as Narrator. Well done Giants!

Tremendous , excellent production values throughout. Born and raised in San Francisco I now live in New Orleans and when I saw the ticket prices for the MLB game, I thought I would stay home. Making my Birmingham hotel reservation right now. I will be bringing my "Willie Mays Flame Treated Adirondack Big Stick 302" bat, all 34 1/2 ounces of it.

I played state playoff games in Rickwood my junior and senior years in high school in 09-10. It’s a crazy feeling being in that park. I still drive by it all the time while I’m working. So much history in that place. I just hate that it’s in such a bad neighborhood

Willie played but a scant 13 Negro League games, but it doesn't stop them from using his name as the centerpiece for the documentary. Whatever works I guess.

“I wish I could come out to Rickwood Field this week to be with you all and enjoy that field with my friends. Rickwood's been part of my life for all of my life. Since I was a kid. It was just ‘around the corner there’ from Fairfield [the town where Mays went to high school], and it felt like it had been there forever. Like a church. The first big thing I ever put my mind to was to play at Rickwood Field. It wasn't a dream. It was something I was going to do. I was going to work hard to be one of the Birmingham Black Barons and play ball at Rickwood Field. That's what I did. It was my start. My first job. You never forget that. Rickwood Field is where I played my first home game, and playing there was IT -- everything I wanted. I'd like to be there, but I don't move as well as I used to. So I'm going to watch from my home. But it will be good to see that. I'm glad that the Giants, Cardinals and MLB are doing this, letting everyone get to see pro ball at Rickwood Field. Good to remind people of all the great ball that has been played there, and all the players. All these years and it is still here. So am I. How about that?” was willie mays literal last public comment.

Willie Mays Played in about 125 games for the Black Barons between 1948 and 1950. He's only credited with 13 games in the integrated stats because they only count games they have complete boxscores for. But from newspaper accounts mostly from black newspapers Mays played about 23 games in 1948, 80 games in 1949, and 22 games in 1950 for the Black Barons before he was signed by the Giants.
