Photobooks are so damn important ! The other day, I found a jewel of street photography at the bookstore. I didn’t knew the name of the photographer and the book was under plastic so I couldn’t have a look but I felt called to it. I took it, obv. When I finally discovered the photos, I was so moved and in awe. Eugene Atget was a French photographer and this book is a collection of photos of Paris before WWI. As a Frenchie, seeing historical street photos of the capital before the war… gosh! Those photos are beyond everything that I’ve experienced before. I can only encourage people to try historical street photos, it’s a wonderful treat for the eyes ✨

@David Lopez Me too - Also an avid photobook collector (Verging on an addiction!) - If you like that then have you seen “Early Color” by Saul Leiter? That’s also a beautiful book. His compositions of New York in the 50s are really lovely. Worth a look if you haven’t already seen it. 😊

I'm glad you mentioned the library! I've checked out tons of photo books from the library. You can see so many more than if you had to buy them all yourself, and branch out by picking up books you may have been hesitant to spend money on.

Photobooks are one of the best ways to enjoy photography and learn from other photographers, like you said. In Social Media there is this focus on the single frame, the bangers. While book people have their stand out images it's so much more about the composition, the long form, the story that unfolds over several pages.

“André Kertesz”, Princeton University Press, 2005. Happens to be my favorite. But probably more inspiring, (and awe-inspiring), plus a lot cheaper, is Taschen’s edition of “Camera Work”, which includes every photo from all the issues of the magazine by that name, which was created by Alfred Stieglitz more than a century ago with the express purpose of demonstrating that photography was an art form the equal of painting. By the way, I second your suggestion that lots of fancy photo books can usually be viewed for free at your local library. If they don’t have a book you’re interested in, ask them to get it from another library. That’s what they are there for. 🤓

A lot of the great classic photo books by Winogrand and others that are incredibly rare and incredibly expensive to buy if you can even find them are available to look at in the NY Public Library, the International Center of Photography and the Los Angeles Public Library main branches by appointment. I’ve even handled old prints by famous photographers like Stieglitz at the NY Library. It’s under supervision of course and you wear white gloves but it is a great opportunity to see rare out-of-print books you can’t otherwise see.

I’ve always wanted to start a photo book series. As years go by trying to post for social media felt more soulless. There's something very intimate about paging though a photo book. It's one of my best sources for inspiration. I also thumb through art books of all kinds, just to a tactile experience that lasts. So glad I saw this. I can't get enough of having a book of photos to inspire me. As the new year dawns, I'll be putting more work into publishing my own work. I can't wait to drop my second photo book in a month or two.

I guess I'm old school, plus my wife would kill me if I bought a bunch of them, so I use my library card and either look through them there or bring them home for a short while. Allows me to see so much more. Hard to say favorite as a lot depends on my mood at the time and what I feel like I'm missing in what I'm seeing around me. But it's a great idea and fully agree disconnecting from media and having something tactile is very enriching.

True, photo books are important, not only for photographers but even for others (if possible), it’s the best way to show the past, coz now we take photos and burry them to our hard disk where even those who took it and the subject forgets…or we sometimes over share too much to social media.. it’s always nice to see something and be able to touch it somehow… what if suddenly the site decided to shutdown and you won’t have a copy anymore… (haha friendster days)

Do you know of digital alternatives to these? I took up photography to help me remember things in my life, but I have yet to find a good system for keeping my photos. I can save my photographs in folders on my computer, and sort them by dated folders, but it doesn’t really feel the same. I don’t have a way to just ‘browse’ my previous memories or accurately find a memory by giving the photographs tags or something. I would appreciate a recommendation if you happen to know of any good systems!
