There are plenty of fantastic magazines out there, of course. It's just that every now and then there are a few that...think rather highly of themselves.

Super accurate, except I was waiting for the part at the end where they finally say what kind of writing they want "We want all types of writing....just not any genre stuff, none of that sci-fi, horror, fantasy, romance, historical drama, mystery, comedy, action adventure crap...ya know...just the good stuff."

I have read descriptions where it literally said "We accept all Genres" and immediately after "No Sci fi, Fantasy, genre romance or Mystery" lol.

I remember my college lit course had this massive collection of works, called the Bedford. It included it's own screed against genre fiction, as it was bad for being "made to be sold" Fantasy, sci fi, horror, romance, mystery, action, adventure, westerns- all crap according to the author. They even included an excerpt from a longer romance novel, specifically to show how crap all genre fiction was. Contrasted with a depressive, bleak and utterly joyless, work about a mother committing suicide. Oh, but the Classics^TM don't count. You can have Oedipus and Antigone and they don't count as fantasy... cause reasons.

University flashbacks, we had to find a literary magazine, read it and then write a short story aimed at submission to that magazine. Except 99% of all specific genre magazines are paid only and the majority are vague like this. I am sick with remembering

The gripe with my university's literary journal: Was told in the creative writing club that submitting to it was a great way to start getting your work out there. Was told this by several members of the committee on said journal. Come to find out that the journal has not published fantasy or Sci fi stories in YEARS - ie, the genres most people in the club were interested in writing. Even fiction in general had a difficult time getting in, most of the entries apparently being poetry and non fiction.

@@WasatchWind how on earth did a creative writing club justify publishing non fiction?

@@The_Blazelighter I have some major misgivings about such low ranking fiction. How does it appeal to the general audience?
@The_Blazelighter

@@christopherbroms2508 You'd be surprised at the quality and brilliance of low ranking fiction. If it recieved more promotion, then general audiences would definitely be on board. Even watered down fiction is quite admiralable in how it can gather together dedicated fans (Especially shippers. Whatever floats your boat I guess).

Where's the part where they turn away SFF stuff cause "that's not real literature"
@genericallyentertaining

You can send in SFF stuff, but you can't call it that; you have to say "magical realism" or "myth-inspired" or something.

@@genericallyentertaining Ah magical realism- it's like fantasy, only the magic is chaotic and not understood. Just like real life and the chaotic eldritch nature of the laws of physics. Or biology. Or geology. Yep, we know nothing about those.

Hey man im new to the literary magazine world. I have been rejected 11 times and currently have 9 pieces pending. I love the sun, carve, and The Paris review. ( even though i find the reviews poetry.... not that great alot of times) But i was wondering if you could give me some advice on which magazine to send like a Poe-ish, kafkaesque, short story to. Preferably print issue. Hope your well, thanks..

One time I went to a writer's workshop and there was a writer who talked like this for every single critique he did. He went on to create a literary magazine. I'm not totally surprised. (He mansplained literature to literally a group of people that were in the top 7% of 10,000 applicants!!!)
