Some classics really get shredded here. I think this is the first time I've heard that Revenge of Shinobi, one of my favorites of the generation, was a horrible game.

Right off the bat I knew I wasn’t going to agree with this list as he put Sonic Spinball second last. I frickin love this game. The game is fantastic and Sonic as a pinball is a perfect spinoff title. I get that not everyone loves it, but c’mon!

Alex Kidd over Phantasy Star IV guys? Love you but come on!

Opinions are subjective... BUT Phantasy Star IV is still one of my favourite/best RPGs I've ever played and still beat it once in a while. The story is actually really good and the art style holds up, cut scenes are gorgeous and it has genuinely impactful moments. Finally I'll say the music is REALLY good from top to bottom.

Toejam and Earl should ABSOLUTELY be in the Top 5 1991, Split Scren Co Op, Rogue Like. Low replay value? The game has UNLIMITED replay value. Its a freeking masterpiece.

Revenge of Shinobi was amazing

Eternal Champions was one of my favourite games on the system back when I was a teen. The characters were great, the fighting fun, and it had a decent story (that the Mega CD version expanded on).

Vectorman was a masterpiece.

How is Vectorman not higher up? Its visually beautiful and outstanding.

Gunstar Heros was my FAVORITE game on the Genesis. It just was so much fun and great to play with other people.

Since when does Phantasy Star IV have one sidequest? Did you miss the, oh, entire list of them in the Hunters’ Guild? And the story’s still pretty good. Definitely structured and detailed for its day, and while it’s not exactly as fleshed out as your average contemporary RPG, and a remake would no doubt get meatier in a hypothetical modern remake, it’s aged far better than many of its contemporaries. As for the translation, I lived through the 90s era of not caring, and PSIV aas much better translated than many games of that day-even better than other games in its own series. It even bothers to rationalize a translation flub in the previous games. I certainly don’t mean to come off as a fangirl, but it demonstrably doesn’t have the flaws you say it does, or at least not to the extent you say it does.

Streets of Rage not in the top 10? Heresy

You seriously ranked _Phantasy Star IV_ lower than _Alex Kidd, Virtua Fighter 2,_ and this barebones version of _Tetris_ that we all got. Even as someone who didn't grow up with this game, this is laughable. "Only twenty hours" of content? Not only are you prioritizing quantity over quality, but you're also harshly judging the game by modern standards. There were hardly any JRPGs in that era that were forty hours or more. "Exactly one" sidequest, huh? Well, fuck all of those Hunter's Guild missions that you can take, because those apparently don't count. I'll give you that the plot isn't especially stellar, but what *is* there is well-paced, with most every story beat being relevant to the overarching narrative. The only other game of the era that I can think of that matches its tightness is _Chrono Trigger,_ and that's a pretty high bar. This isn't even factoring in the multiple references to the previous games, of which you need to know precisely none of to enjoy the game. If you're playing the game in a bubble, you can just think, "Oh hey, that's some nice lore;" if you're familiar with the series as a whole, then it serves as a very nice shout out that fits in with the game being a celebration and the climax of the original series. And this isn't even talking about all of the good points that you ignored: the fantastic graphics; the numerous animations, which were quite the rarity even in late-era SNES games; the fact that the sound designers actually knew how to use the Mega Drive's sound card; the magic systems, which even include team attacks (not as good as _Chrono Trigger_ due to the way they're implemented, but still solid for what they are); the macro function… Hell, I'm sure there are more that I'm neglecting to mention. But hey, this is still ultimately your opinion, even if I feel that multiple aspects of it are suspect and flat-out incorrect. Do what you will.

Oh come on Alex Kidd isn't that bad, sure he's not as good as Mario but he was a big part of Sega's history and does deserve to be on the mini.

I like TripleJump but I really think they aren't the target audience for the Genesis Mini. How Phantasy Star IV got a lower rank than Virtua Fighter 2 Genesis speaks for itself. "Treasure can do no wrong." *literally says Light Crusader is a bad game minutes ago* And, Monster World IV also came out on the Xbox 360 in the West as well and there is a Streets of Rage 4 coming. Yup, not the target audience.

You got the sentiment towards alex the kid wrong - one of the Alez Kidd games (Alex the Kid in Miracle World) was a fun game, and it was the built-in game for MSXII, so about 20 million people have strong nostalgic feelings towards it.

12:50 the Spiderman cameo was actually licenced at one point on the original hardware due to them having the rights for him at that time (they even added the copyright info for him in the boot credit screen and changed the sprites to be _more_ like the character), but in all rereleases of the game, the IP was lost and they had to make the sprites and such more like a parody of Spiderman

There's a MegaMan Maker project where people make an engine and level maker for MegaMan. People publish and play levels. I'm proud to say my youngest son absolutely loves MegaMan games.

Landstalker deserves so much higher. The controls are weird but the game eases you in so gently that by the time you have to do the really tricky jumps the review complains about you should have little trouble. And complaining about the censorship is weird considering it amounts to one 30 second scene being cut. The combat isn't the best but if anything it's too forgiving.

I absolutely do not agree with the majority of this list. I love these longer lists from you guys, but I miss the ones actually written by Peter and Ben. Still enjoyed this immensely though!

Revenge of Shinobi at 54! Smh, you’ve got to be kidding me. Earthworm Jim in the 40s: BS. It feels like anyone at triple jump old enough to have played these games when they came out must have had Super Nintendo’s. Absolutely appalling.

I am the one person on the Earth who loves Altered Beast! ^^ Probably one of the best bland mediocre games of that time. :D Still very playable, despite being short and so formulaic. And I gotta say, I don't agree at all with the order of the list! Very entertaining nonetheless ^^

I absolutely LOVE Kid Chameleon, and I'm upset that it didn't make it higher. It is not only one of my favorite platformers on the Genesis but one of my favorite platformers of all time. I've had it in emulation form on just about every computer I've ever had, and in fact, have it on my mobile phone right now! The masks let you do far more than just shoot projectiles. One let you climb up a wall, turn into a tank, fly like a tornado, turn into a fly and fly, and (i believe) stick to things, shoot sound waves, and so many other things. The moving, wall of death, levels were hard as hell, the backgrounds and diverse levels were gorgeous, and it all still holds up fairly well today. This sounds like you guys simply played the first couple of levels and just gave up on it. Because the farther you go the better it gets. The ONLY thing I really ever had a problem with was that with 100 levels it didn't have a save mechanism. Not even a code to put in. So, if you died... and you would die... you had to start all over again. I've never beaten it to this day. I can't get past the windy city level.

I can forgive Shining Force being so low on the list (even though the Camelot-era games are my favourites of all time), but I can't forgive the awful new 'Shining' games being referred to as good news for fans of the series! I do love these really long form lists tho - awesome job! :)

Sword of Vermilion got pretty good reviews at the time of its release in Magazines. Very good game in my opinion and a good alternative to Phantasy Star II.

You can play Puyo Puyo here in the west as well !! All you have to do is change the language to Japanese in the settings menu of the SEGA GENESIS Mini. Do that will make ALL games on the mini turn into the Japanese version !!

Thank you for introducing me to Yu Yu Hakusho Makyou Toitsusen. I'm a long time fan of the show and yet I did not know about this game (along with most of these unlocalized games), what a treat!

OK, I almost stopped watching after they mentioned "Eternal Champions". smh. And yet, it's highly ranked on so many "hidden gems" lists. Also I highly doubt you two actually played this when it got released. Otherwise you would talk and think differently. Actually I preffered this game over Street Fighter 2. Also a lot of other entries you mentioned I merely could roll my eyes.

Monster World IV was also released on the 360 as part of the SVC Monster World Collection and on PS3 at the same time it was was released on the Wii's VC..

Revenge is better than Shinobi 3 because of the level design. The on rails levels are quite dull on repeat play. I find choosing games you can't play because they're in Japanese over classics a bit of an odd choice. Landstalker is really well written and the puzzle design is great. Rent A Hero may well be interesting in theory but the combats pretty awful in practice.

Not gonna lie, I love Shining Force. Me and some buddies used to bunk off college, partake of the devils leaf and play Shining Force for hours on end. I'm not saying you're wrong having it so low down, just an observation of how rose tinted our nostalgia glasses can be.

I think you were a little harsh on Vectorman since I'd say it's still a fun game to play. But I do agree it's practically criminal that Alien Storm, MUSHA and Sonic 3 & Knuckles are either foreign exclusives or missing entirely. Those are three of my favorites

Madou Monogatari is only the remake of the first PC98 game, 1. 2 and 3 were remade for the Game Gear and that was it, it's primarily a Japanese PC series. Pretty good game, with a few different endings, depending on the number of points you gather. Lord Monarch has a fun story mode, also, I quite liked it - it's funny and pleasant to play through, not 'too' hard either.
