Thank you so much for your insights and analysis. I am a mechanical golfer who can do every kind of mistake over the course of a round (and, like many, shoot bogey golf in a thousands ways) and who needs to understand why I’m trying to do whatever as I work to think less (which often leads me to completely forget one thing as I focus on another) and create more body memory in my swing.

Bruh I can relate to being mechanical. I recommend Golftec or anywhere you can practice with a trackman. I’ve learned feel is not real. I got my backswing very, in to out and now feels like I’m doing a huge slice swing, but it’s 3 degrees in to out. Without a monitor it would be borderline impossible to know what’s actually happening when making swing changes

Hi Russell. I've been watching your videos since 10 months ago and I can say I improved a lot my golf swing. Now I'm able to hit the ball much better, just need to practice direction 😉😉

Maintaining width is really key - makes a huge difference in the swing plane when the downswing is initiated. As long as I remember to keep that width, keep the head relatively still and keep those arms in close when starting the downswing...well, good things tend to happen. Thanks for these tips/reminders, Russell - always appreciated.

I’ve watched many dozens of swing videos. It only took me four of you videos to totally change my golf swing for the better. I even helped a 73 year old totally change his distance and dispersion after watching these videos. I wish you could have seen his face that day as he hit shot after shot 190 yards carry drives in a tight pattern. I’ve stopped watching other swing coaches except one other. You not only understand the swing, you can effectively communicate the why it works.

I just subscribed, I will be trying this out tomorrow on the course, right now, in my living room I tried it, however, have difficulty with the right-hand part as I can't feel my right hand like others can or use it to any great effect. (right arm 75% weakness and no muscles in wrist) What I can utilise was stretching and bringing my left shoulder into a better position, lets's see what happens. Thanks very much Russell.

Thanks Russell for providing different ‘thought’ perspectives to the backswing and downswing - (a la feeling ‘the stretch’). I feel that thoughts of turning shoulders and / or dropping arms often causes me to lose my width and / or swing path….so looking forward to thinking and trying something different👍

You have also explained this in another way that works too… that most beginners apply the speed wrongly at the beginning of the downswing. When you apply the speed through the ball and beyond, then naturally the beginning of the downswing involves dropping the hands until it is time to accelerate through the ball.

I have been watching quite a few KZfaq videos and go to just a few key sources these days. Russell you are one of them. And this video just might be my aha! moment. I have always had trouble releasing my downswing early. I should caveat I am a solid 4-7 handicap, but lack distance in my shots due to the early release of my hands. This video explains perfectly how to move the downswing correctly. I have understand using the trail hand, but it was more of a drive down with the index finger which promoted the release. This has me forcing down with the heel of my hand and keeps the wrist flex longer for more lag. Wonderful stuff!!!

Another classic video of yours that puts so many myths to rest about pulling the arms down in the downswing (pulling on a church bell rope as Jack Nicholas used to describe it in his instructional missives of the 1960's- my era of introduction to golf) . I think the idea of the right hand pushing down and outward on the left hand to the ground in the downswing as one simultaneously rotates and brings the upper arm close to the body. The lead shoulder and lead hip should move progressively together to lead ankle. Maintaining the stretch/tension/ activation in the lead arm and maintaining the distance between the sternum and the hands for "width maintenance" are also spot on concepts. Yet another new idea for me is to get the top of the back swing you do not need to turn the body per se to complete rotation but rather it is the stretch of the lead arm that will bring the shoulder around to complete the rotation. A lot of info here on the backswing , transition/downswing and body rotation but golf is a complex game when analyzed. Well done.

As promised you posted a video that may right my wrong i sometimes struggle with. Concentrating on maintaining width is where I'll start. I'm also guessing maintain width provides for more room to clear the hips and get to your left side ? I'll test drive it and report my results. Thanks Russel

Love this lesson , thank you! What about the drill a lot of instructors have of putting a towel under your right arm when swinging. This can’t be accomplished if your trying to think width in the back swing.

i like the left arm push instead of over rotation of the body however I prefer to let the weight of the club on the down swing dictate speed and rhythm

Russel, as soon as i tried extending my left arm away from my sternum, like you are showing in this video, my god that was a HA HA moment for me! My arms were probably to close to my chest, and now, i crush the ball so much better, and straighter! It even fixed my transition, no more casting, it simply fixed everything whitout even thinking about it! Thank you very much Russell!!! Dennis from quebec Canada🇨🇦

Is the push out initiated with the right hand or left for width?

This seems to work nicely as long as my right elbow stays "inside" (or the feeling of 'inside') of my right hand on the way down.

Would be great to see you hit the ball with what you were teaching, visualization would be so helpful. I hate it when guys just talk technical and technique without showing the full swing at the ball with the ball flight. Not too helpful I’d say, wasted time.
