My favorite of all time has to be the New Super Mario Bros Wii one, simply because its one of the first Mario games i've played in my life and it's just so menacing and brilliant sounding.

When I was younger, I played smb 3 all the time, then around 7, I played smb galaxy, and the theme was an immediate hook. I'm 15 now, and I'm glad that one of my favorite themes is still being remade from time and time again

Even though its fine to not fix what's broken and I love the original, the changes made by the Super Mario Maker tracks are so refreshing after so many iterations of the same short theme.

Luckily the two themes that had it kept it, mario world got the motif again, and mario bros got a banger. Though with mario worlds motif the jungle theme has a unique theme despite it not getting one in the game Nad 3 had non in the game and it also didn't get it

I was NOT expecting it as a kid and it was honestly kinda scary - it felt like after beating all 7 of his kids to reach his doorstep, Bowser was finally taking Mario seriously and literally sends an entire army at him. Like it's the game's way of saying 'The first 7 levels were the EASY part, kiddo.'

My faves are the SMB3 one, Galaxy, Paper Mario, and NSMBWii I think that it's based on Mars the Bringer of War from Holst's song of the planets. I recommend giving that a listen if you love this :)

Fun fact. The Timpani drums of SMB 3's airship theme in NTSC regions are out of sync to the main melody. PAL regions have this rectified and is in sync. Judging by this, this video includes the NTSC version of the song.

Super Mario All-Stars is clearly the best version of the theme. The subsequent ones may be more bombastic with their orchestral arrangements, but they trade in that ominous quality for something that sounds more bright and adventurous.

I agree. It is the quintessential Airship Theme. While the … original? … one laid the groundworks, but lacks in many ways, the All-Stars-version is “it”, not too little, not too much, it is exactly right.

SMB3 NES will always be the best one. Something about the NES soundchip that gives it a hard dark and suspenseful atmosphere rather than a loud orchestrated holly wood film. Mario 3 was a dark game with a surreal feeling surrounding it, not a loud silly CG film. The NES all the way forever.

Even though I’m born 14 years after SMB 3 launched in North America I got to play the all stars remake which I think the levels of the airship/tank/boat was better than the newer Mario games and has the best music

They all technically sound the same instrument-wise. You got the aggressive bass drums and the brass for the melody. Well except new super mario Bros Wii which uses organs for the main melody.

Unpopular opinion, the New Super Mario Bros one sounds the best to me, yep I prefer it over the galaxy version. It adds more to the melody and the extended part was done the best out of all of them.

I feel like thats the idea of the whole song, no matter which game it is, the airships are a looming threat and mario has to go and take em down, and the song just embodies that scenario perfectly.
