Great video Marcin, I’d only add one thing.. as a mastering engineer, it’s an old way of thinking to add -4db etc headroom for the master.. as long as it doesn’t clip, we can manage the overhead in the mastering stage.. good video.

Thanks man! Yes, that -4db may be irrelevant today (as you can just turn down the volume yourself before mastering if the mix isn't clipped anywhere), but this habit in mind keeps your channels from redlining on the other hand 😜 Makes things easier in the long run

But what about crest factor? If you overcompress the kick, as you do in the video, likely that kick would not sound punchy, especially in club

The "right" crest factor will vary from genre to genre, depend on the kick drum style, producer's preferences and so on.. I'd say that the crest factor is just one of the few factors that dictate the kick drum's punch. Of course, if you listen to old schranz techno for example, the kick there is going to sound punchy mostly because of the crest factor. The low-end "thump" is audible well, and that gives the punch. But with time, we met the obsession of having the track sound as loud as possible (loudness war), and also new genres with more aggressive kick drums emerged and developed (take speedcore or uptempo for example). In these genres, the punch comes more often from high-end or mid frequencies transient, and the low-end thump can be sometimes even non-present (so, it indicates the multiband compressor was used). A techno example of such a kick could be the "Skin" track by Dostroic. The kick is still punchy, but it's not the low-end that gives the punch. Because of that, you can push the limiter harder. The crest factor is in theory smaller, but that's "fine".

Awesome tutorial🔥. Is this conclusion right? In order make the kick has more presence, you need to pay attention to mid frecuencies. I produce techno, so I always follow the processing chain that you used on the Klangkluenster tutorial (limiting + distortion and saturation) however. I've seen that I need to boost the 1k area to increase punch. Or at least add another layer to increase the click. (, Same kick with an LFO).

"I've seen that I need to boost the 1k area to increase punch" Yea, boosting 1k area with an eq often helps in kick sounds, though it's different than controlling the dynamic range of these mid frequencies ;p

14:53 why can’t i put it to 1:20ratio? mine only seems to go 1:10.

Telling the Ratio in Multiband Dynamics is kinda broken.. To get the ratio of 1:5, you need to type "0.2", since 1/0.2 is equal to 5.. Following that logic, you should type "0.05" in the Ratio field to get the Ratio of 1:20 XD
