For those who dont know, theres a guidebook to Gems and it describes Opal as "Achieving a balance neither Pearl not Amethyst could achieve on their own. However balance takes focus and the slightest mistake causes Opal to fall apart" Being Opal is essentially a balancing act.

Yes! I love it and it's so perfect for her character. It's canonical that Opal is so forgetful because Pearl and Amethyst are at complete and utter peace when fused, so they forget about anything else easily.

I feel sooo sorry for opal. In the original serie (excluding the movie, in which she actually just sings) i think she's the fusion who ever talked less. She only makes 4 appereances in SU and talks only in her debut episode, saying less than 15 words... she deserves justice, she's so pretty and powerful...

Something cool I just noticed is that in Opal’s first appearance, we don’t hear Amethyst or Pearl’s signature instruments while she’s punching through the bird. It’s only when she’s revealed that we hear the familiar drums and piano, subtly telling us that we already know exactly who Opal is

Opal should’ve received more screentime. Especially since this was our ACTUAL introduction to the concept of fusion. It would’ve been so cool to see it from Opal’s perspective and how well Pearl and Amethyst can really work together despite their opposite personalities. There was so much potential there but it was lost unfortunately :(.

The fusion is interesting being the product of two gems with opposing personalities. Almost feeling like some form of equilibrium. That's what's probably contributing to her silence. But she still has attributes of both gems that occasionally shine through like Amethyst being forgetful.

She says so little because shes using every ounce of concentration to maintain her form! Any time she does any action that isn't related to the reason pearl and amethyst fused, it increases the risk of that concentration breaking and the fusion coming apart. Thats my headcanon!

ok steven and opals first interaction was too perfect. Its like she wanted too make a good first impression by using what a certain tighten lacked PRESENTATION. Then when she finally talked too steven shes so gentle too him, she looks back on what pearl and amythest heard from stevens song and does a reprise for steven, we see pearls uptight personality clash with amythests laid back one acheiving balance...Although its unfortunate that being Opal is a balancing act for Amythest and Pearl so she rarely gets too have her own personality shine before the 2 fall apart. (remember stable fusions ARENT the 2 different gem consciouses both taking turns in speaking its a third separate personality meanwhile unstable fusions like malachite have the third personality repressed because its components are fighting.)

I get why they made opal really stoic and calm because amethyst is really laid back and pearl very orderly but it also makes no sense when you think about it Pearl and amethyst are both very insecure and as we see with smokey quartz, a fusion of 2 insecure gems makes their insecurities show even more, i feel like she should be really insecure and Amethyst's insecurities project out of her theough her acting like she doesn't care and also pearl seems to try to be very orderly because she always worries about things, I don't think Amethyst's personality should counteract this, I feel like Opal should be a mix of the worst part of both of them, maybe even be a symbol of how they've both grown (Opal's personality changing as the seasons go by) it seems like such a missed opportunity Either way if that doesn't work they could've still kept her as calm but make her secretly insecure and also they really should've made her talk more, she seems so interesting

I think the nature of a fusion is predetermined by the gem they become. Because I remember it’s established in universe that a fusion can still exist as an individual gem, somewhere, it’s just they are rarer. And Opal is described as a balance Pearl or Amethyst can never achieve, and that’s also why it’s hard for them to speak, because they have to be hyper focus in the process. There were still characters development too, as for before Pearl and Amethyst struggle to just fuse but now they can do it willy nilly

Amalgam (the fusion dance song for Opal) is so good-- I've been playing it on loop. I like how it is actually very reminiscent of Pearl and Amethyst's themes in the soundtrack. Also Opal's physical features give me Gerudo vibes with the height and the hair and the sharp nose and the lips. She is so damn cool.

I would have loved that they kept that same mystisism and weight fusion had in that first appearance. it's a super cute moment, this is in the Diamond Authority's ballroom, and they operate under strict hierarchy, and fusion under a Diamond's court is strictly forbidden and inappropriate, so when the main characters fuse during the ball, that other fusion felt seen in an environment where fusion with other gems is unheard of. they also risked their lives for that fusion in that moment since the Diamonds were in the room, and fused anyway for solidarity :) truly unmatched energy

I've never seen that last short about fusions. Kind of wish they'd done more than say "human stuff like growing is sooo cool" because it's kind of lame. Connie is super smart, hard working and great at swordplay, and all of this makes her a great teammate for Steven. When they fuse, that teamwork is in perfect sync and they pretty clearly become something more than the sum of their parts.
