I think my favourite thing I heard about this was from my dad. Played Halo 1 and 2 all the time. And he always told me you didn’t see his face because “you” are the master chief. Hearing this as a kid was awesome. Sparked my imagination like nothing else. Pretending to be a bad ass Spartan was definitely a blast. Now I look back and simply enjoy the many memories.

@@thegooseshow2691Chief was always a generic hero, it's why you could project yourself onto him (and by extension The Rookie and Noble Six) in the games. If you're implying 343 made him generic when his character got fleshed-out in 4, they were just catching up with the books.

You might also remember the glitch that was around back in the halo3 beta. Where you could get the camera angle to go through the helmet revealing his visor-face area

Masterchief's face is the player's face. You don't play AS Masterchief, but you ARE Masterchief when you play Halo. That's why it should never be revealed

That face texture was not found in the halo 2 files. It was found in the CE anniversary files, and it’s Carter’s face.

@JamesTDG I'm trying to think if it was another game. All I remembered was, "Wasn't his identity supposed to stay hidden?" The only other game me and my brother played was Doom 3 but the Doom Marine's face was immediately revealed. So, the chief's hair was brown or dark blonde kinda uneven, almost jagged looking, pale skin like the lore. It's odd as it was some time AFTER the Longsword scene in maybe a hanger? With crates? And some other characters. Anyway, I was shocked when I played MCC and thought it was changed! I first played Halo:CE on PC in 2004 after my brother (RIP) insisted I play it. Although I first played it with my then wife, I remember watching him play on Legendary, and that was the ending, NOT THE JOHNSON SKIT! I even played the maw on legendary to confirm.

Chief is not bald. He has very close-cropped light brown hair and piercing blue eyes. He's also unnaturally pale due to the amount of time he's spent in his MJOLNIR armor.

The last face is actually a texture used for multiplayer spartan skins in halo 2 where if you tried to look closely to another's player visor of their helmet you would see a glimpse of a face

I'd love if it became part of Canon that the reason we never see his face is because of his own beliefs. It was always supposed to be so you could see yourself as the chief but as they give him more of his own beliefs and personality, I think his helmet should become part of his beliefs. He is aware of the Morale and Legend he brings, and while he doesn't like it, he deeply cares for and respects his Marine comrades. So he leaves the helmet on so the legend survives, knowing that if he ever was seen with it off, the legend is broken and the Morale is gone. He goes from Myth to Man.
