The passenger cars in Rushmore are 1/8th scale, most likely 7 1/2” gauge (the American standard for 1/8th, I know it’s 7 1/4 in New England and the rest of the world) parlor cars, likely built from railroad supply Co. kits.

funny that New England is the only state that does that, as if all the New Englanders collectively decided to gaslight model train hobbyists from out of state

I love Anderson's commitment to getting stuff done in camera. The F7 model rig with leaf blower was brilliant, but old time-tested classics like "two wall plates and some drapes on wheels" for those inside lokking out shots. Stop-motion funiculars. Awesome.

Interesting how the trains in Asteroid City used real paint schemes (The F7 diesel wears the bumblebee colours of the Denver and Rio Grande, and the carriage on the Alien special is in Southern Pacific colours)

I also noticed that one of the freight cars, a gondola I think, had the word ‘Almonds’ done up in the Rio Grande speed style font, perhaps a nice little nod to the actual railway line.

This is a marvelous video. I love the mix of train lore and behind the scenes filmmaking facts. The bit about the overhead dolly in the Darjeeling Limited was one of those things where I thought, "Of course!" Simple and brilliant at the same time.

Nice video, really like the large-scale F unit and its train in the final one. One extra detail i would mention is that at 4:24 the funicular design ,the 1930's version at least (both the ,,3 steps shape" and colour palette) looks very similar to the funiculars at the Buda Castle in, well Budapest. The line isn't very long, (95 m) but the funiculars have been recently refurbished. They also have a name, one is called Gellért and the other is called Margit.

So much to love for this video! I adore the concept images, the hand painted crockery and details of the interior in the Darjeeling limited. So many clever ways of portraying the feeling of being on a train in the Grand Budapest hotel too, the actual shot compared to the behind the scenes in the barley field is so good to see, I never knew! I appreciate the special mentions of the cable cars and funicular too as they feature in so many of the films. You've clearly put a lot of research and effort into this video and the love for these movies shines through. My favourite line is "of course, the train within the play, within the TV show, within the film" about Asteroid city haha

😶👍very nice 5:31 - It was not a goods train that M. Gustave and Zero were on, it was just them in third class. I recall the line from M. Gustave of, "oh, third class". Then I recall Bill Murray had the line : "You'll need these for the dining car" as he hands the duo black ties.

Regarding the last scene. To me, it depicts the change transport that occured during the 50s. The train is leaving, being diminished, and replacing it is the automobile, going off into the distant future.

12:56 to 13:06 there is no way car can get behind billboard that fast, few seconds ago it was parked before fast food. On the beginning of Asteroid City, when train is moving through crossing to the right, outside of screen. When camera move to the right, train disappeared, only tracks are visible (same spot can be seen here 12:15). It is clear that railway tunnel is in fact wall with hole in it.
