It would not surprise me to see that the Empire allowed for the redundant troops as some sort of experiment to see what loadout and gear worked the best. Maybe some behind the scenes politics in the military forced the creation of separate but same in function units.

Same with the troopers that operate vehicles. First there were the troopers in Rebels that operated speeder bikes, tanks and walkers, then there's the one operating the tank on Jedah in Rogue One that looks completely different from the Rebels design, and then there were the other troopers using the speeder bikes in Solo that also have their own design. Or that there's two different types of Snow Troopers, the ones in Empire and the other design used in Solo. Huge amount of redundancy all around

My head canon is that some variants were phased out over time and replaced by other versions, and that over time more and more of them just wore regular stormtrooper armour with some additions or painted stripes.

I know it's always a moment of excitement when they introduce a new trooper variant or TIE variant, but some of these are just ridiculous. They should focus on the environmental specialty variants (of which are still redundant like coastal defense, swamp, and wet weather). From those you can have weapon specialists being some variation of their environmental specialty. Like a Rocket Trooper or Sniper attached to a Snow Trooper unit will wear snow trooper armor. Something like a demolition trooper would simply be a snowtrooper that can plant explosives. This will leave fewer armor variations/trooper types for the ever budget conscious Empire to produce. Then they can keep all the elite/special operations variants as those actually look cool and deserve to be set apart. Though ideally the standard stormtrooper armor should be engineered to handle each environment, just with some modular add-ons if necessary.

It's hard to disagree with that. Although they were portrayed as feared troopers and intimidating to ordinary citizens. Stormtroopers had to rely on sheer numbers to overwhelm capable opponents.

They were like similar fighting forces amongst modern autocracies like Putin's Russia for example; yeah they're really good at attacking unarmed civilians in hospitals or elementary schools, but when it comes to fighting other armed combatants, they'd get their asses handed to them.

According to Lucas canon, stormtroopers are the navy seals of the empire, which is stupid considering how much there were, and how they actually acted. Plus the death troopers have taken over that role. While yeah stormtroopers seem super loyal to the empire, rebels made it seen like stormtroopers enlist either out of fear for themselves and family's safety, or sometimes out of racist and xenophobic ideologies that align with the empire. So while that statement is mostly correct, from the way their portrayed on scene, and also never in actual war I might add, only in occupational roles, seem more like another way for the empire to control and fear monger its occupied territories by making people enlist for safety. And they probably save costs by making stormtroopers their poster boys, instilling fear with them, and safety by joining. While they let the actually well trained army and navy handle the war. Anyways my point is, instead of "Stormtroopers are the stupidity loyal soldiers of the empire, while the army does the real work" its more like "Stormtroopers are the way the empire controls its occupied territories by instilling fear into people and make them join the stormtrooper corp, NOT out of loyalty and admiration of the empire, while the army does the real work" idk doesn't really matter no screenwriter ever or will ever portray stormtroopers the same way.

Yeah that variant is just from a SW game as you probably kmow but is still Canon so included it. My least favorite of the list too.

Cavetrooper and spacetrooper are mentioned. According to Wookiapeedia, Hazard troopers are Legends only and are not listed in the Canon list of troopers from what l can see.

Tank troopers are not necessarily listed as stormtrooper variants. They are listed as their own category.

It differs slightly between Canon Legends. However, in this Canon related video, l wenr with what the Lore was telling me.

Nope, not missed any, l'm afraid. I have the same list as Star Wars Explained. Most people seem to get mixed with the Legends list of troopers, which is a much longer list.
