Do you have an Everyday Carry Camera, one you can slip in a pocket or bag? Do you go for film, digital, or both? I run through what I use and why.

I ride an ancient British motorcycle, and like many who do I have a grimy old shoulder bag. But unlike those many I carry a camera along with the bike stuff. The camera is a Sony A6000 fitted with the 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens, and it lives inside a 1950s British Army ammo pouch with a spare battery. One reason I chose this setup is that I get the 24mm= lens at the wide end; my favourite focal length. I used to carry a Canon G9 around with me, but in a belt pouch. The Canon's lens is a 35-210mm=, which at least made me look at the World in something other than 24mm=... 🙂 By the way, as a teenage boy I took an Ilford Sportsman with me everywhere.

First - i loved the Freudian Slip at the end 'Down in the colon'. Second - by bizarre coincidence, my EDC bag is the same as yours and was also a hand-me-down from my partner. Good bags, eh. I'm never without a camera - my landscape bag is always in the back of the car - but just doing normal stuff in town i nearly always have my EDC(B) with my treasured Oly E-1 with the 25mm f/2.8, the 50 f/2 macro, and some Takumars or similar. I love the E-1 with it's useless little screen and 5MP CCD. The viewfinder is good enough for manual glass and the whole shooting experience is very 'filmic', not least because you can't chimp. It's no low-light camera, but in good light it performs wonders. And every now and then i'll take the Spotmatic as well. Happy days. Cheers.

Last combo: Ricoh Caplio GX8 and Olympus AF-1 Twin Took one photo with the Ricoh and decided that I don't like it. It's a very nice camera, overall, but the noise - even at ISO 100 - is horrendous! The AF-1 Twin is really very nice! 35 and 70mm are perfect focal lengths for an EDC camera. I can wholeheartedly recommend this camera.

I currently don’t have any digital camera aside from my phone . I usually have several cameras in my truck at all times but I can’t safely carry one around while working but outside of work If I’m stuck with just one “pocket camera “ I’ll have either my Olympus AF10 super which I’ve had for nearly 25 years or a Pentax Espio 115M because it’s so tiny and can make great images including night shots with my mini tripod. If I’m going on a trip somewhere I’ve got a backpack with 2 SLRs, some lenses , 2 Zeiss Ikon folding cameras, my grandads old Voightländer Vito II and a finally a film point and shoot in my pocket

Hi Gideon, digital edc is a Canon Powershot SX100 IS 8Mpx. Pretty well featured and runs on AA batteries. Seems to expose for the shadows so have to use -2/3 or -1 to get some sky detail in high contrast situations. It may be faulty or normal behaviour for such a small CCD sensor. Film EDC varies, XA or Ricoh 500G. Bag is seasonal, if I'm not wearing my coat with big pockets then I use an innocent looking bag with an insert.

Nice combo's, I agree that an innocent looking bag is key, I actually can't wait for the one my wife gave me to get a big more beaten up, so it looks less new!

We're remarkably similar in approaches. I also carry a bag I bought off Aliexpress for 5 bucks and bring two cameras as well. I run a Bell and Howell Dial 35 (basically the 35-2) as my film, and a SONY Cybershot HX99 as my digital. I have gotten great results from both and I will continue to run these. At any point when I go places I'll usually alternate and leave the bag though just to be more agile. For instance, if it's hot outside I'll bring my film inside stores or whatever just to prevent the film from burning up in the car. I like that it forces me to find images with only one camera. And usually on my commute to work, I bring my Cybershot in a tiny little bag on my keys. When I go out specifically to shoot though I'm usually running a bag

The Canon 35-2 is a great camera, and close to being my film EDC, still have a few to test before making my choice.

@@gideonliddiardphotography It's great up close, not quite macro level but portraits and such are great. The camera can bite you sometimes though because of the auto aperture but you can pull the tab above the shutter out to manual aperture. A lot of my shots in overcast days suffered because it was using a low aperture and with the zone focusing it's very easy to go out of focus. I would recommend replacing the light seals around the door area and pulling out the aperture tab on overcast days. Also the graphite lube on the gears is a 100% must do it makes rewinding the film so easy

I had an xa absolutely loved it! It did eventually fall too pieces… but not before that sharp little lens gave some pictures I like!

Keep an eye out for a future video, I bought a £35 Olympus XA - it's rough but does it still work well enough...

A Minox EL is on my EDC film shortlist, great cameras, and I've just posted a video on it. Would be interested to know you thoughts on my experience with one.

I got a Fuji X70 because of its small size, supposedly together with the Fuji XF10, I think they are the smallest cameras with an APS-C sensor... but the X70 seemed to have better build quality and also had a more "retro" look. Now I'm thinking about getting a Pentax Q-S1, as I think it's great to have such a small system with interchangeable lenses (I'm excited to try the tiny "06" lens, equivalent to a 70-200mm) Similar to your choice, I had the Canon G12 on my radar (because it has the CCD sensor), but with your decision about the performance at high ISO... you have made me think if I will finally go for a G15 or G16... And finally, now talking in "actual" terms, the Sony RX100 VII is the best all-in-one small camera, with great AF, and great performance at high ISO.... maybe the RX100 V has better aperture but again, with the Sony high iso performance I'll get the 24-200mm zoom of the Sony RX100 VII

For me, due to costs of film and developing I only put film in my cameras when I'm going somewhere new, or at least with a purpose/project for a shoot then I'll carry. Otherwise it's my phone. I'm one of those people where if I've got film sat in my camera for everyday use then I'm devoid of ideas

I know that feeling, but I try and remember that it's better to have a camera and not need it than need it and not have one. So I take one with me (well two) just about every time I leave the house, even if I don;t end up using them most of the time.
