► An entire course on using tablets: f64.co/pen-tablet
(THIS IS NOT a link to the tablet, this is a course I made for getting the most out of the tablet. Get the tablet on Amazon!)
Do you edit with a Pen and Tablet?
My first run-in with a pen and tablet for Photoshop was in 2008 with a Wacom Bamboo Fun Tablet. I can still remember getting it. It felt awesome to use but was also very difficult to get used to. At first, I used it for everything because, well, I could! After a while, I realized the pen and tablet are just tools for post-production and it doesn't need to be used for everything. There are two main tasks I use my pen for while I edit.
Before I discuss what I use them for, let's take a look at WHY I use them.
The pen and tablet is kind of like a mouse with one very special characteristic that makes it stand out, pressure sensitivity. When you are using a brush in Photoshop with a mouse what you click is what you get. What I mean is, whatever brush presets you have set, the brush will respond with. Sometimes that means you will get a harsh line and the only way to make it less abrasive is to lower the opacity. However, you can only have one opacity set at a time, right?
Wit a pen and tablet things are a little different. A Pen and Tablet will use your hand's pressure on the tablet to respond with the appropriate opacity, flow, or size. So, the softer you brush with your pen, the smaller or lighter the stroke will be. The harder you press, the darker or larger the line will be.
As you can see in the photo above, with the mouse, what you click is what you get. With the Pen and Tablet, you have a lot more versatility and all with the delicate stroke of the pen on the tablet. This give you a ton of control when you are editing your images.
As I said above, I primarily use the pen and tablet for two things in Photoshop, Masking and Dodging & Burning.
You may have heard of a pen and tablet before. The term Wacom is almost synonymous with the pen and tablet. However, I have had my fair share of frustration with Wacom products and have since started using the ZP-Pen Star G640. In this tutorial, I will show you how to use a pen and tablet and why I prefer XP-Pen.

I just came across your channel. I really like it and I subscribed. This is my third video in a row that I'm watching. You got some great stuff! Anyways, I bought a pen tablet about 6 months ago from XP pen. I bought The Deco 3 with the wheel and 6 buttons. I don't use the buttons per se but me being left-handed I like the fact that I have the wheel for zooming in and out and that's all I use it for pretty much. But I actually just started using it about 2 days ago so I decided to watch your video and see what you had to say about these things. I must say though I can see a huge difference in my dodging and burning and wished that I had set this up sooner.

I have been doing competitive photoshop as a hobby for over 10 years. The tablet you are reviewing reminds me of one I used to swear by. It was a Pen Pad by VisTablet. Did nothing but draw. Coolest tablet ever! It too had a brain header but the drawing surface was a 1/16" rubber pad that you could literally roll up. It was fine, or looked so. So here I go and install this crazy cheap product recommended by some guy on the web. Well, from box to 100% operational, it took literally 8 minutes. Plugged it in, downloaded the driver and voila! Set the pressure to my liking and started playing. Far too easy. Admittedly I will be learning how to excel at using the pen, but already I can see the difference. The immersion you spoke of getting totally involved with painting my photos is amazing! Hey, David, I'm wondering what model number you Bamboo is. I've been playing with a few different used Wacoms I've been buying and hoarding for super cheap. I have noticed some weird quirks between different models and the different driver versions they need to work. Funny thing is i found the right combination of older Bamboo + old drivers to work better than newer Bamboo and Intuos models (that are still older than current generation).

@@LimitedSpectrum It's the CTH-470. The drivers were newer ones I found on the Intuos site but I don't recall the version #. I guess my problem had a lot to do with the problem Blake mentioned in his video - too many controls that, at least for me, got in the way of a smooth user experience.

Checking back in after using the tablet for a while. It's changed the way I do everything in post-processing. Dodging & burning of small areas to bring out (or hide) details is so easy now - just use light pressure and paint over what you want to enhance. I use it on the masks that come with smart objects too in order to control the amount of sharpening, for example. Some areas look better unsharpened or at least sharpened less than other areas. I use only the pen and tablet. I disabled the other controls because I don't want or need them. Best $30 I've spent on photography all year!

yes, you are right, often, before we buy an item, we think in this way "expensive = professional", it's not every time correct. I bought a Pen Tablet of $ 300 and I discover that what I use it is exactly the same future of a Pent Tablet of $ 30

I have the Wacom Intuos Pro Medium for a short while now, and I do seem to have driver’s problems. In term of buttons, I enjoy the wheel with which I increase or decrease the size on my brushes, but I hardly use anything else. So I will keep your recommandation in mind...
@kapseli86
@kapseli86 4 жыл бұрын
I recently bought same Wacom as well, main reason was the wheel which I though I would use a lot but that's not been really the case. Also seem to experience some driver issues, sometimes all pen related stuff are extremely laggy etc.
@WilliamLesourd
@WilliamLesourd 4 жыл бұрын
An other problem I notice sometimes with the wheel, is that when I turn it one way or another with my finger, the brush size goes irremediably to the maximum (5000px) or minimum (1px). I can’t figure why it does that. I usually need to restart my PC for it to work properly. Irritating stuff.

Hi Blake, Thank you for all your helpful tips. Based on your previous recommendation, I purchased the XP-Pen Star G640 pen and tablet once I learned that my very expensive Wacom tablet only had about 2,000 levels of pressure sensitivity compared to the G640. The G640 works much better than the Wacom. I also like the small size as I can carry it with me. I did have a small issue when I recently upgraded to MacOC Catalina, but the XP-Pen support team was responsive and was able to get be back up and running easily.

Great channel. I've been on the fence about tablets but I am both a photographer and traditional artist (oils). This one is affordable enough to try out and if it doesn't meet all my needs I can go to a different model. I believe it would be hard for me to paint on one surface that is being viewed on a different surface (my brain don't work that way I suspect), but I will find out. Thanks for all of your GREAT tutorials. SCOSLO is my new mantra! Aloha.

Just received this in the mail today and love it so far! Quick question since I’m new to editing tablets... can i zoom in and out of the photo i am editing using my fingers on this tablet? Or is it just for the pen to act like the mouse just more accurate and sensitive...

Just the pen, use ctrl+spacebar to quickly switch to the zoom tool.

@f64Academy
@f64Academy 3 жыл бұрын
It always changes. That's why its hard to make one that is evergreen. Between drivers, applications, and Windows updates, it is difficult to do a setup tutorial. But my basic concept, I have it so it only works on one of my monitors (not both) and I don't do much beyond that.

Watched last week, and just bought the XP-Pen Star G640S (under £28 on Amazon! The one in the video was £29.99) - the G640S supports Android too and my daughter will use it for that. Everything works fine apart from the occasional jump/spike where I get a random line. Sometimes is it short, sometimes the width of the pad. Anyone got any ideas? It could be due to other USB devices, my ports are all fully loaded.

Where was this a few months ago when my Wacom died? 😉 I actually replace my Wacom with a Huion. The first they sent me didn’t work. But the next one has been working great. So far no issues and only $60 compared with $250 for the comparable Wacom

Never got on with a tablet - it's always in the way on my desk, and I need direct visual feedback (I'm one of those who never liked this "move here, look there" way of working on images). Now I use a "tablet" for this kind of stuff - a Surface Pro … ;-) Okay, granted, much more expensive, but I can use it as my mobile device too, so it does the trick. But this little tablet you've shown is quite intriguing, I might actually give it a try (if I can get it here in Europe). Edit: Found it on Amazon right away, and it is dirt cheap here too! (They have other interesting stuff with this brand name on it, thanks for the tip!)
