This one illustrates a core problem I have with Saw as a series. I wish the series were a mix of clever kills and clever escapes that always keeps you guessing. Strahm escaping the drowning trap by giving himself a tracheotomy is surprisingly cool and creative, but the movie throws it away by giving him a stupid and contrived death shortly after, seemingly out of brand obligation to never let the good guys/victims have even the smallest of lasting victories.
@TheFatalcrest
@TheFatalcrest 9 ай бұрын
That's honestly what I want as well! It would add to the dance, does Jigsaw consider them rehabilitated if they escape? What happens if they break a trap without following his careful design? Does he consider it bad form to go back for a victory? If they relapse or have ANOTHER Flaw he perceives in their life, would he then justify it to himself he can return for them. XD I really also wish we maintained a cop! Someone that Jigsaw has history with and keeps chasing him (like Tap if he lived, or Donnie, or Strom) where he leads them to some growth on that chase.
@ab-gail
@ab-gail 9 ай бұрын
@@TheFatalcrest Man this is what we’re missing. I was hoping Tap would be that recurring cop character since you could play as him in the video game. Imagine if Hoffman was just as crazy but he’s a cop who working to catch Jigsaw. Willing to do anything, even kill fellow cops to catch Jiggy!

Jigsaw saying he never killed anyone isn't the problem; he is a deranged serial killer after all. The problem is the movies insinuating that he's right. Thank you for watching these movies by the way! You continue to make make bad media entertaining.
@RedStar_N7
@RedStar_N7 9 ай бұрын
I think they completely butchered their original point. Jigsaw's whole deal is that he's not like the typical murderers you see on the news, chasing a high and the power of hunting someone down and killing them. He could do that as easily as he sneaks up and kidnaps people. Rather he seems fascinated by the human mind and what its willing to go through when faced with unimaginable pain and suffering, and what it may or may not sacrifice to escape these fates. He feels he's been awakened by his own suffering in a way and his delusions compel him to seek individuals who he sees can share his view when they are reborn. All the trauma and agony in the world be damned. Its all worth it to him if they come out the other side better than themselves But like sooo many other things in this series. They really dont trust the audience to figure that out on their own. So they come up with a more simple-minded motivation to have law enforcement and other rational people regurgiate so everyone can understand. Not knowing or not caring the damage this does to John's already twisted philosophy

I can't believe Strom was actually supposed to die there. Apparently the actor started drowning for real, but his acting was so good, neither the director or anyone else on set had any idea his life was in danger. Fortunately the actor had previously done some improv work early on in his career and used that experience to save his own life with a pen as they were filming. The crew apparently loved it so much, they immediately called the writer so they could re-draft the whole movie around Strom surviving that encounter. Bravo James Wan

@proudtobeme1ashkente
@proudtobeme1ashkente 9 ай бұрын
@@squee116 I'm not sure that's a fair comparison. The active role Jigsaw plays in this plan and the outcome he had in mind are important aspects. He made many choices on the way to save himself, whereas taxes aren't paid through making an active choice. They're mandatory and usually automatically deducted from someone's pay (at least where I'm from). Most of us are also not involved in the processes of tax redistribution. If taxes weren't mandatory and you could choose to directly fund the local police department of which Riggs was a part of, then I would agree they would technically be trying to save themselves, as they'd likely be funding the police for their own safety. If I were nitpicky about it, then in the case of mandatory taxes you could say anyone who voted for politicians who vowed to fund that specific department with the voters' taxes (who then won and funded that department as they promised) should be concidered as trying to save themselves, as well.

I dont know why the directors have such a hard on for trying to get that across as if he's innocent. Why have police involved if there's no crime? Compared to the previous ones, except 1, this had one of the better elaborated games, since it was designated in a way where it may look where one has to die for room, but Jigsaw leaves the fair hint versus how people would behave. Once they started advancing thorugh the rooms, if they got the nobody dis result, they could've started to realize that nobody needs to dies, and the last trap would be easier (ignoring the work arounds of using non blood fluids). Also, in response to some people in the chat, and without offense, but they couldn't get previous rooms bodies. Besides the bombs detonating, leaving the corpses in almost impossible ways to be carried, but the doors of the prvious rooms were being sealed as well. You could argue they could take the body from the woman in the bathtube beforing letting the door seal, but if you check the timer they had only few seconds to take the cables off and carry her, besides they being stressed at that moment to realize. As much thinking logically seems to make some of this traps easy to solve, we as audinece has the hindsight and not stress o fear going inside our minds like the victims in these films do. Granted, it is not for all traps, some of them are really not hard to think thorugh when given more than enough time, and failling kinda makes the erson look dumb (like the ones in SAW 2).
@stoneymahoney9106
@stoneymahoney9106 9 ай бұрын
I'd agree that it makes logical sense, but the resources and manpower required to construct the contrivances to force it to make logical sense break the immersion. 1's main room was just a bathroom with stuff hidden in it, and it's side games were pretty simple. It was feasibly that one guy could set this up. But 2 onwards jacked up the level of engineering and mechanical complexity to a level that broke the immersion and turned the characters into weightless ciphers. The result is a movie with all the emotional attachment of a crossword puzzle. Only with torture porn and screaming. So it's not all bad.

I liked some of the Saw movies based on the ideas and themes, but they had bad execution most of the time. 4 twist and lesson is a perfect example of this problem. Honestly, I am not fan of the genre when it is gory over the top way having people getting killed in most scenes with the traps just for the sake of it. As you said, it loses a lot of weight and impact, with a few exceptions. And just as you also pointed out, it is ludricous as some of this traps and scenario can get. A former Channel Awesome member named Welshy had a incomplete retrospective of the SAW films and it had a gag of how many type of job masteries Jigsaw should have to pull this stuff (architect, electricist, plumber, etc), and he also must have been the one to teach his disciples most of the stuff.

I think a more interesting argument for John Kramer to make shouldn’t be, “I’ve never killed anyone in my life”, but rather he should say something like, “I’ve never condemned anyone to death in my life.” Because that, at least, is closer to the truth than the whole “I’m not a killer” argument. Because to his credit, all of Kramer’s traps, for the most part, are escapable.

Man, i think there was some amount of potential with this one... They should of made all 5 people work together and survive, as a twist on what you'd think a Saw movie would do. I'd genuinely be impress if they did that, might even make it the best one (though that's a low bar). AND have Strahmhoffman leave the trap room KNOWING that Hoffstrahmmen 'won' because he would escape. Then have Hoffstrahmmen as the spooky-ghost-jigsaw-clone-man that Strahmhoffman and gang are trying to hunt down as he does his trap-tisms. Overall, still very lost on this Saw Saga, it's probably in the middle somewhere out of the five.

I disagree on having all 5 survive. But it would've been great if they showed the contrast between cooperating and not in each trap instead of all at once later. By this I mean: 1-In the first trap. They all survive. There's really no reason they wouldn't, the keys just magically worked by plot logic so just have all 5 make it. 2-On the 2nd show the contrast by having it be so while the journo fights against everyone and gets himself killed, the blonde woman goes into a tube with whoever lets her, showing that indeed 2 can fit per tube had they cooperated. 3-3rd room same thing happens, black woman tries to convince them to kill the junkie just to get killed by the brunette, blondie mostly just stays back, given how she seems easier to scare on the 1st room it'd be easy to imagine she wouldn't intervene. So they fry the black woman. 4-Finally on the last room you now have 3 people, which makes it way more believable they survive. And can show how the electrocution could have been survived by all 5 (since they already know they could have beaten the bomb room and how). You still get 2 gruesome deaths and a horrifying gore moment. But you also get to show how they could do better and to some degree did. Saw is partially beaten, while the 2 with most pronounced character flaws get culled along the way. It. Would. Have. Been. Perfect.

Seems to me a trend with horror movies and horror movie fans that its not fun if things go well. Essentially people root for the killer which means the killed people need to be dislikable, and not just in personality but in how they act stupid at times as well. If someone dies from something dumb the common reaction is "good you deserved it for being so stupid" and thats how it works. The audience satisfaction comes from everyones gruesome endings, not their succeeding, which for anyone that isnt much of a horror movie fan is pretty dissapointing since we like to see people who are put in unfair positions succeeding.

@@thespanishinquisition4078 going along with your example. I could see the 3rd room playing out with someone dying but not really with the 2nd room, at least with how the tubes are shown. I still think a Saw movie where the whole group survives by working together would make for a more interesting story. (the unfair solo traps can still there to provide the gore.)

This is as far as I got. After this I was like...okay...this is just gonna keep going...ugh. I for one, did enjoy the "we should have worked together" aspect. It's asking the impossible of a person by assuming their human nature won't allow it. It has a small semblance of the 1st film where they struggled to get information to figure out the bigger picture of what was happening around them. The cat and mouse between hoffman and strahm was also nice given that these films were advertised as gorefests. So good on them for including some tidbits. Like I do agree, 3 is the one that angers me the most, but it's also the one that I keep thinking back on because of how frustrating it is. Good on you for slogging through them all. I'm interested to find out what all I missed...if anything. I agree with long man, 1,4,5,3,2 so far.

28:59 "If a subject survives my method, he or she is instantly rehabilitated." According to the Jigsaw-victim-list that Strahm found earlier, Seth Baxter (pendulum man) was victim #3. So, at this point, Jigsaw has had only two people in his traps: Cecil, who after succeeding in pushing his head through knives tried to kill Jigsaw, and Mark, who failed and burned to death. Of course, there's also Logan from 'Jigsaw', but as far as we know he wasn't even properly "tested".
