The hot-selling Ford Maverick has proven that customers have been waiting for a compact pickup at an affordable price. And buyers are rabid for this little truck for good reason: The Maverick is easy to drive, easy to park, returns great fuel economy, and can handle chores that other vehicles in this price class simply cannot.
The Maverick is unlike other Ford trucks that rely on heavy, old-tech body-on-frame construction. Instead, the Maverick is built like a car with a lighter-weight combined frame and body structure. It shares its mechanical bits with the Ford Bronco Sport and Ford Escape. And that's no bad thing because it drives more like a small SUV than a typical pickup truck. The Maverick has agility and driving ease that no large pickup can match. That said, when there's no load in the bed and just the driver onboard, the Maverick can feel bouncy. That's not the case with the Maverick's main rival, the smooth-riding [Hyundai Santa Cruz] (/hyundai/santa-cruz/) pickup.
The standard hybrid, front-wheel-drive powertrain is the fuel economy leader. But opting for the turbocharged model and all-wheel drive makes the Maverick more fun to drive and improves its overall truck capabilities. Those who plan to venture into the dirt can opt for the FX4 Off-Road package or the new Tremor package that provides serious trail prowess.
The Maverick delivers a roomy and thoughtful interior with a surprising amount of storage spaces and cubbies. It's easy to find a place to stash your stuff in this truck. The lowest-level XL truck feels downright cheap on the inside, so we recommend spending a few bucks for one of the nicer trims with power-adjustable seats, dual-zone climate control, and improved convenience options.
Every Maverick has a four-door (crew cab) body style with a short 4.5-foot bed. And that space can swallow 4- by 8-foot sheets of plywood and a payload of up to 1,500 pounds. Every Maverick can tow 2,000 pounds, and the tow package boosts that to 4,000 pounds.

These are one of the hottest vehicles on the market for good reason. Back in 2021, I did the Ford website custom build, and after delivery fees, I paid roughly $22,030 for my XL with Co-Pilot 360, and it's been nothing but fantastic. Let me put it this way: There is no other truck for $20k. There is no other hybrid vehicle for $20k. This does both, and the base model is awesome as is. It seats four comfortably, is pretty quiet, rides more like a car than a truck, can still haul 18 4x8 foot plywood boards, accelerates quick enough - certainly quicker than my Corolla - AND it beats the Corolla in fuel efficiency - I'm averaging 53 mpg in summer, and 39 mpg in winter. You're dreaming if you think you can find anything close to that sort of deal anywhere else. Just remember - if you don't ever want to pay a dime over MSRP, when ordering it, do it via the Ford website as a custom build, follow the directions, and make sure the purchase agreement gets signed by both parties and that you get a copy.

XL hybrid here, and I totally agree with you. I'd describe mine as accelerating surprisingly fast from zero to around 25 mph or so (I don't know if it's the electric motor or what, but it has great pull to it in that range), and then slightly less so after that, but still good.

I have a 2023 Ford Maverick hybrid and like it a lot. All modern cars are rolling computer networks, so the days of hackable wiring are past. However, as a consumer, I've been very pleased with my trucklet. I think it's all the truck most people really need. In the sort of mixed driving I do (and admittedly trying for best MPG), I've averaged about 47 MPG indicated (45 actual) for the several thousand miles I've driven. This is a "mild" hybrid built to a price point, so the electric drive is not strong and the battery is not big. In everyday city traffic, the motor alone will not accelerate with other cars, so you have to choose whether to let it fire up the engine (which it does seamlessly) or to annoy the guy behind you by being a slug. If you make very short trips, you will not get great mileage either, because the system warms up the engine when first started. High speed highway driving takes an MPG hit too, because the engine pretty much has to run full time over 60 MPH, and the truck has the aerodynamics of a brick. Running the AC in summer will cost you a few MPG too, like every other car. Still, I have never seen less than 40 MPG for a tank. Fuel economy really shines in heavy freeway traffic where everyone is lumbering along at 30-40 MPH, when I get >50 MPG. The planetary transmission in the hybrid is dirt simple and very smooth, so I will expect very long life from it, mechanically. The OEM shop manual is disappointing because it fails to cover many topics of interest to an owner, such as how to test run the engine to do an idle leak check after an oil change. It can be done, but requires a secret sequence of control inputs known only to dealership mechanics. Annoying, but normal for the industry. I give my Maverick experience 5 stars so far, the support experience less so. The only real complaint I have is common to many current EVs and hybrids: There are conditions under which the vehicle will perform significant regenerative braking WITHOUT the driver touching the brake pedal to illuminate the brake lights. This can place you at risk of being rear-ended, so the driver must be aware of this. I fully expect NHTSA to mandate a fix in the next couple years.

Excellent experienced info. I have been interested in a new Nissan Frontier 4x4, is overkill for retired in town. Like it a lot, but not sure want to drop to average of 20 mpg at best. And $46k price. On other hand, I only drive 6,000 Miles a year max, gas for Frontier would be about $80 to $90 a month. Not awful. Maverick I’m not sold on that info screen looking like just stuck on the dash like a goiter or barnacle, cheapens interior. I wonder how quiet inside, how smooth over bumps Maverick is. With tailgate down and bed extender, looks like heavy e-bike would roll in and lay down fine. Easy low height for that. If gas shot up in price, 40 mpg average sure would be nice. Thanks again great info. If a response, I ask on how quiet, how smooth. Any recalls or fixes ?
@ralphwaters8905
@ralphwaters8905 3 ай бұрын
@@Skunked68 - There are 4 or 5 outstanding recalls on my '23 XLT; all software patches. None are critical to me "yet" but the PCU emissions recall is a prerequisite for my 2025 registration renewal so I can't defer forever. I'm waiting for others to forge ahead and do integration testing before I follow suit. In the Maverick Truck Club, it seems that someone always has troubles after a recall update, but the reality is that the silent majority do not. I've not used the infotainment screen with my phone as much as I thought I would. Since Google Maps does their real-time navigation online, it eats up my mobile data allocation so I use a Garmin GPS instead. This also works beyond cellular range so is better anyway. One dirty secret nobody seems to mention is that text messages via BlueTooth to the truck are currently limited to SMS and MMS. Most Android phones prefer the RCS protocol (when messaging another Android) but I believe RCS is not yet supported in the Android/vehicle API so text messages thru the truck are NFG to me at this point. I hope Google will fix this soon. I've changed my oil once but not touched a thing otherwise. No mechanical issues, although I think Ford cheaped out on the 12V battery so I doubt it will last 3 years. I suffered a hand injury and didn't drive it for a couple weeks, so I put a float charger on it to head off the dreaded Deep Sleep (low battery) mode. I think all the new cars run too many emissions checks when "off" so this may be the new normal. As for quiet and smooth, I'm pretty happy, but then I think the stock audio system is decent too so some might think my standards are low. The smooth part is for real, though. I can tell when the engine starts and stops, but only if I'm looking for it. If you're not paying attention to the powertrain, you might never notice. The eCVT makes the Maverick run like a diesel electric locomotive, where engine speed is fairly constant and varies with load instead of MPH. Glassy smooth with no shifting, unless you put it in "Sport" mode where it simulates shifts so you can pretend you have a conventional automatic transmission. LOL Remember that the Maverick was designed to hit a price point, and this shows up in many places. e.g. The interior plastic is soft and scratches very easily, the paint is thin, etc, etc. My biggest gripe is in the documentation. The user manual covers ALL versions so you need to cross out many, many sections that do not apply. There is too much useless caveat boilerplate to please the lawyers and to make 1 manual fit all versions, there is no overall view of the dash or console showing all the controls and where to read about them. Some sections are simply WRONG. The printed wiring diagrams from Helm are OK but take a while to learn. The Service Information (shop manual "CD" on USB) is also terrible, and is geared to those with Ford factory diagnostic equipment. Ford does NOT want anyone to maintain & repair their own vehicle. We need to vote in a national right-to-repair bill! Funny: I FINALLY found out how to start the engine to do a leak check after an oil change. Leave it in Park and just stomp on the accelerator pedal! Easy peasy. (The dealer told me there was no way to do that.) Should be in the manual, huh?

@@ralphwaters8905 Hello, loads of good info. Is good not major troubles with your Maverick. The last Blue Oval I had was a brand new 1988 F-150 4x4 Lariat, 302 V8 and 5 speed manual. How about $12,800 ? But in one year, 15,000 miles, then traded away, I kept a clean conscious and told sales guy it was not good to me, he acted like he didn’t wish to know. One year, it required 3 alignments and special shims, 2 brake jobs, 3 leaks, dash dimmer only worked one narrow spot, emergency brake froze on, towed to town and thawed out, a new gas tank sender, first motor’s oil consumption dropped to 350/qt. A second new block and started out at just 1200 miles per qt. And if the transmission was shifted up a little too soon, lugged, second engine bucked and missed and ran on like 5 cylinders until 2000 rpm hit and zoom, all 8 fired. Dealer never figured that out AND charged me repair time. Doesn’t make sense while under warranty, I was young, should’ve gone over their heads to Ford. Every six weeks a new nasty problem, i was stressed and hot under collar. Twice I walked to work 5 miles. Several times out of my pocket, “rent a wreck” old used car for $14/day instead of like $30/ for a newer rental. Uff da the Norwegian heritage folk say. The good I liked was killer headlights, but got flashed often on low, and the seat sat higher with more knee bend, was very comfortable. The dash layout looked more sporty car like and that was fine. After that was a new baby Blazer 1989, excellent 4.3L motor, I kept it 80,000 miles and only an ABS control box was replaced and a door wind seal adjusted. Zero oil used in 4,000 miles. What a wonderful rig. I named it Buker. Don’t know why, it just seemed to fit. You discovered how to make hybrid engine to run, way back when, as a kid I fiddled with 66 Ford Galaxie 500 and discovered a sequence to turn AM radio on sans a key from a parental unit. Flick on emergency blinkers, step on brake, flip on either turn signal and voila ! Juice for radio. But not enough for heater blower fan. Seems like that overloaded a blinker that you hear into a very fast blink, radio stuttered on and off fast. I rather doubt many others ever discovered that certain keyless sequence. Trickle charge a battery, wife’s Subaru battery gets too low in winter. Short trips. I think also current drain from modern electronics keeping memories alive, anti-theft on, keyless receiver pulsed on. And the garage is insulated, never gets below about 28 degrees even when below zero out. About every 2 or 3 weeks trickle charged. Yes, manu installed cheaper southern battery. And I’m shocked what a new one costs now. Used to be $50/$60 maybe $70 bought a good heavy duty battery. Double, triple that now. Full EV battery after warranty, if damaged slightly in accident is not covered by warranty, have seen Canadian KZfaqrs struggling with physically damaged BIG battery and $50,000/$60,000 replacement cost. Auto insurance totals car, then jacks up their rates. What joy.. there is no “winning”, stuff just shuffled around. Bye. Eyesight strain, typos may be present.

@@scottm.5476 my Cruz was a 23 SEL AWD in phantom black, base engine. It had a lot of bells and whistles that my XL maverick doesn't have, the screen/system is much better on the Cruz. They both ride about the same, the maverick feels torquier up hills or from stops. The bed in the Hyundai is smaller, the little bed compartment was small, but would be good to hold straps and jumper cables. I didn't like the headlights on the Cruz at all, they weren't very bright at all, and being so low on the front, at night people would constantly think I was only using fog lights, I'd get high beams at least once every single time I drove at night/very early morning.

In a market saturated with massive; behemoth size trucks being driven by petite moms and people who don't otherwise tow, haul heavy loads or work the trades and are being maintained by people for status reasons, the Maverick is enough truck for most Americans.

I have 2023 Lariat Hybrid. The biggest cone for me is ridiculously low entertainment display quality. Ford had to work really hard to find that low quality set in 2023. And I am sure that they paid MORE for this lousy set than paying for more modern. Someone has to maintain 15 years old technology and equipment to produce this. Shame...
