DBK, I had literally the opposite results when I tried to strop like that any knife. My technique the last 30 years, is doing precise passes, using 1 or 2 degrees less, than the degree I sharpened the knife, because the leather wraps the edge and the angle is different every time, than what you think it is. That way, I polish exactly the edge bevel and not round (dull) the very edge. Results to a WAY sharper edge, tougher and more precise edge, than the random passes you use. I might be wrong, but that's my personal experience and I know, others, who agree with that, who also strop the same way, as I do. Whenever I tried that random passes, the edge dulled instead of getting sharper, and that's was always the result.
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives Жыл бұрын
Hey greek, Thanks for sharing! Our results are what you see on the screen so it does get sharper with what we do. But I think it's the same with stones there is no one right way to do it. It's also a bit personal with what method you get the best results
@scasny
@scasny Жыл бұрын
It boil down how thick and soft the leather is, also the compound, paste or powder is important, what you describe is thick and soft leather. I have similar results so i instead use ceramic honing rod with slow control passes. But i use wet stones so no stropping is needed and use honing rod just for bring bit of life to a edge after i use it for a while. They are using thin leather on solid backing with wet compound so it have almost no give and its quite used so its packed and smooth.

Would you guys recommend this to beginners for people how want to learn how to sharpen get a good edge on the blade without sending it back to the factory to get it done? Or is this for an average Joe who know how to sharpen to get a decent edge, or a combination of both? I’ve seen it before just don’t know where this is targeting to, Ik it’s for chef knives and such that’s one of the main market but since it can be use for outdoors people as well. When it comes to sharping skills who is this for average Joe or for beginners who want to get their knives sharp
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives Жыл бұрын
I'd say for the people who want to get good at sharpening and aren't yet this is not the right system. This is mainly for those who don't care about sharpening and just want their kitchen knife to be sharp. If you're into knives and want to get into sharpening this system won't help a lot learning the way of properly sharpening. So it's for the average adult who likes cooking with sharp tools

Surprising results from something that I thought could well have been a gimmick. I think the tip issues could be avoided if they provided a second magnetic clamp block that could be moved further up for support. Maybe as part of the extended kit. You could hold it down with your hand or it could be clipped into or over the pre existing block to keep them aligned.

This seems to be for very specific knife shapes. If you look closely the circle makes it difficult to hit the edge of the blade closest to the handle without touching the handle. You only have a set angle to work with, as mentioned, if your knife is too different it will be useless. In that regard its similar to the regular V bad sharpeners In theory youd have the best results if the knife was as tall as the center of the circle. Cool new interesting design but will be short to sharpen everything. It is also not cheap by any means. It is also not travel sized. For me it does not seem to solve anything as there are a bunch of other ways people without experience can get similar results. If you have never had a sharp knife and you need to hold the angle and dont have the money for it, there are a ton of solutions that you could make angle holding gimmicks yourself for very cheap and you could even just use sandpaper stuck to a piece of glass or so. When i started my cheapest attempt was under 2$ from a piece of scrap wood, scrap glass and sandpaper and it worked very well. In these days you could even just 3d print something. I would always suggest to try learning to sharpen using stones or anything similar even if its cheap as that skill will take you very far and is very versatile.

Your comment is very accurate. I bought the horl 2 thinking it'd be an easy solution to teach my wife and kids so they could get in on sharpening with be, but as you say it really only works well for larger blades and stiff blades, such as butcher knives and a few other kitchen knives it worked well, but almost all other knifes it doesn't hardly work at all. Pocket knives it really struggles, and flexible knifes such as my fish fillet knife it would bend too much as you got closer to the end. Long story I returned it after two weeks and trying it on about 10 different knifes. Ended up getting the work sharp belt system and it's AWESOME!! Luckily i bought the horl off their Amazon store and Amazon is awesome about no question returns, so i got my full refund from horl
@magicshon
@magicshon Жыл бұрын
@@texast2595 Glad to hear my theory from just seeing it has some backing in practice. DBK have a bad habit of being too enthusiastic about everything and so whatever negative points they make in any video are easily overlooked even if it can be a deal breaker for many. This is a good example. That belt system is a solid choice as a tiny belt grinder can be used in many ways outside of sharpening too and can sharpen anything and it feels more reasonable to pay the price for it as building a tiny belt grinder is much more difficult than cutting a jig and gluing magnets to it
