George Russell was one of the most hyped up young talents in Formula 1, but how has he gone from being supported by just about every F1 fan, to his every move looked at under a microscope? With George Russell partnering Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes, the two seem to have a good teammate relationship, but why have a lot of F1 fans turned on George? Enjoy!

Max and Lewis built their fanbases many years worth of experience at the sharp end and carry their nationality behind them, George is more of a young pretender by comparison, beyond that, there's little difference, you just feed yourselves reasons to dislike George, much like Max, Lewis and Fernando haters do, granted George doesn't make himself the most easy to like at times but he's just in that stage of his career that the others were in the beginning.

I think you missed the point here. One big reason people dislike George Russel are his on track antics. He gets into accidents way too often, and ruins the races of other drivers, while rarely taking responsibility. This is not necessarily something new, think of his crash with Bottas in Imola 2021, but it has become much more frequent, ever since he has gotten that Mercedes seat. If you also look at how he was at Williams, where he often tried to lift up the team in their difficult times and was a generally positive guy. These qualities haven't totally vanished, but he has become a lot more arrogant, whiny, and corporate. A prime example being in the Singapore gp in 2022, he complained about having to race against Mick Schumacher, who should have just let him by, because he was in a much quicker car and thus deserves to get a pass. Or him taking no accountability in the 2023 Azerbaijan sprint, where he drove into the side of Max Verstappen, leaving him with a massive hole in his sidepod. Add that to the annoying begging for position with hiis team, instead of just proving that he is faster , and him being a corporate PR mouthpiece outside of the track ad you are left with someone who is very hard to like. Feel free to disagree, but that is why I think people dislike him so much.

Can you name one other driver who takes responsibility for accidents they get into ever? because the example you gave from the Baku sprint was not a cut and dry incident that was 100% the fault of one driver however there is no desire for max to apologise when he realistically stood to gain nothing from being in that situation and if he just let George past he would of passed him probably on the same lap anyway. Unsurprisingly when a race is going terribly for George in Singapore he isn't exactly on top form and is being whiney... have you ever had a bad day before? its easy to do. You also heard Charles Leclerc begging for position over Carlos for a podium at Brazil last year... don't see loads of people hating on Charles for it and holding a grudge. The same happened in Silverstone and they are only off the top of my head I'm sure there are other examples from Ferrari specifically. Every driver has their faults and George is by absolutely no means perfect... he is also a long way from being the closest to perfect on the grid but people seems to blow everything he does way out of proportion.

It feels like the reasons people dislike George are the same reasons people like and adore Fernando. I think with George, he was arguably more humble at Williams, and coming into his own and speaking his mind at Mercedes makes him seem to have “lost” his humbleness. I don’t necessarily think that, because there are still stand-out moments where we see what an incredible driver he is but also that he is a very grounded human being. I think ultimately it comes down to exactly what you described as people THINKING they know his entire personality from the few on-track excerpts and incredibly scripted PR interviews, which as it sounds is just ridiculous. I think his perceived “poshness” also kind of adds to what I can understand is a less likeable personality. Again, however, Fernando is the perfect example of this (more so in the past than this season) and yet everyone loves the guy 🤷‍♂️

Fernando acts like “the guy” and carries himself with arrogance and bravado because he’s EARNED IT. 2 WDC, a Le Mans win, and countless other accolades. I don’t even like Fernando personally but his personality fits the resume. George has 1 win. He has no championships, no real victories outside F1, and has got to stop making errors to assuage that. I used to love this dude but his lack of awareness has led him down a nasty path. He acts entitled and impossible to relate to, which is what made him so great before. Watching him get his chance in 2020 and then watching it get torn away from him absolutely infuriated my friends and I, but the driver I cheered for them has been swallowed by this toxic new personality, and it makes me sad.

It's also happening to Lando Norris. People don't like Russell because they are Disneyfying the sport and the people in it. Russell has always made strong remarks. At Williams, it was seen as the young kid trying to lead and defend the honor of the most under of underdogs in Williams. Now at Mercedes, there are no underdogs. So it's seen as a young brat who is just talking shit. Because he's not defending the underdogs, he's defending himself. And people don't like that, they want their Disney-protagonists to be humble. No offense man but this video was very strange. You’ve missed the mark on all of the points imo. People dislike George not because of a “strong personality” or him “acting like an F1 driver” or something like that. Lewis, Max, Fernando, etc. all have arguably stronger personalities and are well loved. People dislike Russel because of his on track behavior. Crashing with Bottas in Imola then wacking him in the head and running away while bottas was still strapped in, the failed dive bomb on Perez in France last year then the non stop complaining that followed, hitting Mick in Saudi then blaming him, hitting Sainz in COTA, complaining about Mick defending in Singapore, colliding with Max in Baku, and several other instances. He comes off as arrogant and whiney (even more so than the typical driver). These mistakes and this attitude combined with him no longer being a Williams underdog are why people dislike him. I don’t have anything against him but this is the general sentiment. I suggest reading the other comments here as they have a similar sentiment and are more realistic than what you came up with

"I miss Bottas" yes because he was willing to twerk for Lewis without the team having to tell him to move.. admit it, the definition of a "good teammate" according to LH fans is someone who is willing to bend over for Lewis, not someone who maximizes the team results. Zandvoort, George would be a sitting duck if he didn't pit for softs, which was what happened to Lewis. If anything he maximized the result after the team didn't pit Lewis, are you saying George should've told the team to pit Lewis? He is a driver, not the head engineer. Spain, George needed a push lap while Lewis was safely through to Q3, even Lewis himself said it was a miscommunication.. why the hell was Lewis pushing behind George when he was safe? Atp George can say "the sky is blue" and you lot will find ways to hate on him.

@karussoul Zandvoort, if Lewis won and Russell ended up 3rd then that would've netted more points for the team so your math isn't mathing there mate. Spain, maybe the miscommunication was the team not telling Lewis he was safe hence him pushing for another lap. At the end of the day George has delusions of grandeur and is putting himself ahead of the team. This isn't Williams, his teammate isn't another driver with the same seniority as him and last I checked the car has improved with Lewis' input, not George. So why is this even a debate? George needs to know his role and play it.

If it wasn’t for Russell crashing into Bottas in Imola, Lewis would have lost way sooner

@@fun364 "If Lewis won" yeah, but Mercedes didn't pit him while George asked for a pit stop, and you lot are blaming George instead of the team.. if George accepted the team's decision, they would end up Lewis P3 George P4 instead of George P2 Lewis P4, that only convinces me that LH fans don't care as long as Lewis is at front. My point is never about Lewis being at fault, but again.. LH fans like you are quick to blame George instead of the team. George is just assertive enough to take matters into his own hands when the team messes up, and you can't accept he isn't willing to twerk for Lewis like Valtteri would. Where was this energy when Lewis was a rookie against the literal defending champion?
