Everyone hates leaf blowers. We have laws banning them. So why are they everywhere?

I moved to the middle of no where from Phoenix because it was a nightmare. Leaf blowers at my complex going up and down my corridor hallway, standing on top of the carports and roofs. Going on my patio right next to my windows while im working from home. I take walks and would hear them daily in the neighborhood 6am - 6pm. It was life in hell. Unfortunately I found the sacrafice is to live somewhere that had no manicured landscape at all and is desolate. HOAs., home owners and renters pay a lot for this worthless, destructive air and noise polluting hazard to keep low paid landscapers in business.

Let’s not start with the slippery slope theory. The noise decibels of leaf blowers are not the same as kids playing or even traffic. Even the people using them cover their ears. The discord they cause is disruptive and intrusive on our peace.

I take issue with noise pollution. If we require vehicles to have mufflers to lower the noise, so too should lawnmowers and leaf blowers be less noisy. Reality is there's people that get off on disturbing the peace with loud music, ricer cars, loud V8 engines, etc. These idiots forget there's people that work nights, or may be chronically sick, requiring more sleep than normal. Every neighbor I've had that decided to be loud and disturb my peace and sleep during the day, I returned the favor during night owl hours by blasting drill music in my resident whilst the windows open, and sometimes park my vehicle near their house and blast drill music. They call the police, but the swine never do anything about it. If you refuse to let this night owl sleep during the day, I will refuse to let you sleep at night.

They are loud and completely obnoxious and impact the quality of life of people around them . People who use them become obsessive about ridding property of any leaf and use them excessively. They should be banned along with wood stoves due to horrible impact on air quality.

I sooo hate theses things I cannot believe how these frigging things disrupted my life. I am a 12hr night shift and I can not get a wink in when they start. It brings me to tears. These guys will start up these thing 3 or 4 at a time. Killing all the bird song, quiet moments that me and my pets seek on our balcony. And it’s every day at any hour. I have so grown to hate were I live, which otherwise ain’t would not. Th sacrifice made for living in an historic district with numerous trees means that these workers are wreaking havoc almost every day of the week and any time they feel like, I guess; of course except late evening. They get to go home and sleep in quiet and I’m left to return to work with way less sleep than I needed. These things need to be banned. And I hate that word but so much enjoyment of peace, quiet and just being able to relax with some mental freedom!!! Is lost due to the over use, misuse, unnecessary use of these tools.

I think banning the sale of all gas powered leaf blowers is a good idea. They are too noisy, release partially consumed hydrocarbons into the air, and there is a good alternative, battery powered leaf blowers, much quieter, effective and non polluting. If you are out in the country, that is another thing.

I accept that electric will be mainstream eventually but banning gas is just stupid as lots of equipment will be thrown out to landfills and I still prefer gas so if some people still choose to use gas then that's their right to do so. Gas will naturally not be mainstream within 10 years even without these stupid bans because electric has little maintenance compared to gas and you don't have to pull a cord to start so once batteries last longer and charge faster then most people will switch to electric and emissions will be much lower than today so making gas equipment use illegal is just stupid.

@@albertpintor3522 you talking about batteries or electric? Your using a electric power source that emits waste. Electric Power has consequences. Batteries require power to Charge, CO2 is a byproduct of coal. Hydrogen is a byproduct of lead acid discharging. Lithium is super dangerous when it fails. Just because you use a battery doesn't solve anything. Unless you never paid an electric bill, or watched the electric meter spin. They cost money to charge. They also cost you money to dipose of. Extra power is consumed with DC you don't see it. read some history on why we have Alternating Current instead and direct current lighting, heating. AC is more efficient than DC, but batteries, no way. Its a sales pitch. It's not going to save us. Especially small gas engines. Yet the same people complaining here will complain when your landscaping bill gets way higher. Hey I have an idea! Why don't you people take care of your own property yourselves!!! Gas equipment outlasts,has more power and gets further on fuel than any electric or battery model out there. To do one day on the job I would need 25 batteries charged and ready to go at all times. There is no time to stop and charge over and over. Yet I can go all day on a few gallons of gas to run all my gear. Where is the electric coming from that charges these batteries? Nobody wants to talk about that though

A more realistic solution would be to pass ordinances limiting the days and hours of operation. If it was just me and people like me, we could ban them but there's an entire category of labor that relies on them to compete with others performing the same task for money. I don't understand, however, why there aren't more and better leaf vacuums which seems like it would go a long way to reducing much of the air pollution caused by leaf blowers. I rake my lawn. My next door neighbor once asked me why I didn't buy a leaf blower and I answered, "because they're too noisy and raking is good exercise." He stopped using his and started raking instead. I'd do almost anything for that neighbor now. My neighbor across the street uses an electric leaf blower and it's significantly quieter than the commercial leaf blowers. I'm considering having the tree in my front yard cut down and xeriscaping the lawn. I can remember using a manual edger when I was young and if you kept it sharp, you could edge a lawn faster than if you used a noisy gasoline-powered edger. Also, I think maybe the need for a gasoline-powered lawn mower is caused by having too much grass on a lawn that would be better covered mostly in shrubbery. The entire architecture of the typical American house is obsolete with its exterior oriented facade. I wonder if our society would be a better society if we started building houses with interior oriented designs with courtyard and exterior walls with no windows since cameras are cheaper and provide more advantageous vantage points to view the exterior. It would be more energy efficient, more quiet, more secure, more comfortable, more private, more resistant to storm damage, more cool when it's hot and warmer when it's cold, possibly less expensive, more like an oasis serving as sacred space for your family away from the harsh profane space of the exterior. Would people spend more time outdoors in their inner courtyard than they spend now in either their front yard or back yard? I think they would.

Boy, talk about a gross generalization. I'll emphatically throw "the flag" on that one. If such a thing were even partially true, it would most likely be due to "the dust stops here". In other words, if you're the only one not using the belching blowers, you may be the only one not moving debris from your property up into the air and down the line, to the next neighbor's yard, car (Car-washes and window washer fluid sellers love blowers), house (house cleaners/dusters hate blowers), nostrils (allergists are giddy for blowers), etc. Oh, and if you're a non blower-user, we can ID your house by the fact that you still have a little dirt in your planters. Hmm...where did all that dirt go? Maybe it just settled? Yes, on your neighbors car windows, lungs, etc. People who employ gardeners who use gas blowers should be willing to pay their gardeners a little more (Their car, houses, lungs, etc. will be much cleaner for it. As will mine.), or accept that their manicured property won't be as perfect as it is, for the 12 hours that it is, after a good blow. But they won't. It's going to take numbers of folks who don't like having their gardeners and neighbors who use said dust-blowing scofflaws, externalize some of the real costs of their own convenience. Pay a decent wage. Bring back the broom, for the sake of health and a few moments of rare peace and quiet in the world.

@@LuisRodriguez-sb1nb so far my favorite electric blower noise wise is the current toro super blower vacs or ultras. My neighbors black and decker bv1000 electric blower is a high pitch scream that I find more annoying than my gas blower lol. @@albertpintor3522 My idiot neighbor got an electric leaf blower and you could hear that thing screech for blocks and blocks. Honest to gawd, if I told you just how bad it was, you'd think I was making it all up. He kept using it and then one day put it out at the curb for FREE. I feel for the neighbors of the guy who took that bastardly machine home. I swear ---- I've hated gasoline-powered leaf blowers for 40+ years and that electric monstrosity my neighbor had was the worst. As far as gasoline-powered leaf blowers go ---- where I live we've had a ban on them since 1997. In just the past week I had to go over to three different properties, all right near my home (one next door, one across the street, etc) and tell the workers to knock it off with their polluting gasoline blowers. Today I emailed a letter to the Chief of Police re: enforcing the law. If you think using a machine with a 2-stroke engine is A-okay, you need to read this: www.quietcleanpdx.org/leaf-blowers-dangers-pollution/#:~:text=Gas%20blowers%20create%20much%20more%20noise%20impact%20than%20electric%20blowers.&text=Emissions%20from%20gas%20leaf%20blowers,%2C%20cancer%20and%2For%20dementia.

@@chrispixley1372 I assumed they were being used responsibly and the people using them did so with consideration towards one’s neighbors. I see your point in that most people probably wouldn’t use them correctly and clean up after the collected mess afterwards. I live in an area that is in a drought and leaf blowers are a much better option than watching everyone’s driveway pool up with water . My neighbors are all good people who communicate well and often so the occasional leafblower used to handle drive ways and walk way leaves on to the grass to be raked later is no big deal and really doesn’t bother anyone here.

Ban leaf blowers, then how you gonna enforce it? Certainly don't involve the police in this kind of non-violent "criminal" activity.
@Cara.314
@Cara.314 2 жыл бұрын
here ya go, i did that research for you! "A civil penalty is a non-criminal remedy for a party’s violations of laws or regulations. Civil penalties usually only include civil fines or other financial payments as a remedy for damages. An action seeking a civil penalty can be brought by the government, or by a private party in the shoes of the government." here is an example of that from a particular community: "Enforcement Based upon increasing concerns from the community regarding the adverse impacts of gas-powered leaf blowers, the Village of Wilmette has made it a priority to enforce the ban this summer. As such, there will be a dedicated staff member to address ordinance violations as they are observed or reported. The Village’s intent is not to be punitive but to improve compliance with the existing law and enhance the quality of life in our community. The Village is not intending to seek fines from landscapers unless there are gross and repeated violations of the ordinance. The landscaping company will be cited for violations of the Gas-Powered Leaf Blower Ban, not the user of the leaf blower themselves." Pretty amazing what you can learn on the internet eh? imagine actually making the attempt!

Gas leaf blower powerful than electric blower. Electric blower not enough blow on bigger yard. Pay more money electric bills than gas leaf blowers. Battery blowers run in 40 minutes then dead battery. People are stupid! Gas leaf blowers run longer and blow faster than battery & electric blowers. Take 2 days blow leaves on bigger yards. If people complain about noise then people need to work on their own bigger yards. People are lazy!! for work on their own yards!! YOUR CHOICE: "People let landscaping use leaf blower blow leaves faster or People work on their own yards. People use their rake leaves & riding mower mulch leaves on their yards" If people not want to mow on their yards then city will fined money to people. RoundUp sprayed smell more than leaf blower and get cancer from RoundUp sprayed!!
