@@FatYokel I do think that money is the key corrupting influence here. Yes there's doping in high end amateur sport too, but I think it gets far worse when there's a paycheck involved.
@FatYokel8 күн бұрын
@@christopheroliver148 Money and pride are the incentives to cheat/dope, and they will never go away. Of course amateurs too have these incentives, and the educated ones know they won't make it to the top of the sport without them; it's no different than bodybuilding in this aspect. As long as people keep watching/consuming/the money keeps coming in, there is little incentive to care about cheating, the money IS the incentive. Not even using basic thermal cameras to catch bike doping shows everything about how much the shareholders of the sport actually care about it.

LOL... All the fun of cycling begins when you can ride at 30+kph constantly between traffic lights, for the thrilling; or when you can ride 3hr+ or 60 80 90 100 kms at a time so you can see your surrounding in a completely different view, for the experience; or when you can bike 20km or 30km without a sweat to commute and get around and you start to feeling that "I don't need a car", for the practicality, and the freedom. Not to mention the mountains, that's where all the true fun begins... Unfortunately for most general population it's something that's just too hard for them to experience. I always say the best friend for general population or beginner cyclist actually is a CAR. Take them directly to some iconic climbs or scenery routes, skip the 20/30/40km "warm up", then they can get the key idea of about what you are talking about, and if they like it, they might want to go faster next time or go further. I find most of times in this way people can get it, especially family members. Oh I forgot there's another thing called E-bike, I think that's also great in these scenarios.
@christopheroliver14811 күн бұрын
Given that I don't have a car currently, I'm happy that there are many very nice rides of 30 to +100Km right outside my doorstep. That being said, I did carpool to races back when I had a license. I did pedal to my local TT to warm up though.

I know they don't understand and don't care about it. But, I'm going to do it anyway. If I have to listen to them talk about things I don't like nor understand, they do too. And if you can't abuse your friends, who can you abuse? My closest friend is obsessed with mopeds, for god's sake! I'm talking to old school ones with pedals and two stroke motors. He has about 20 of them! So, he can listen to me talk about my last gravel race or the new crankset once in a while.

So true, no point talking about it to normal folks. Everyone that meets me nowadays questions me - "Are you still Cycling?" I just twist and respond - "Yeah, I still workout a little" mere mortals don't get the real feeling of being on a bike, wattabombing on a slope.. let them be.. !

I truly believe that, even considering that I am absolutely that annoying cycle-boy that constantly talks about cycling, that bros talking about their jiujitsu thing is absolutely the worst example of this phenomenon. My theory is that they catch some organic neurological parasite from a nasty mat that makes ‘em stoopid.
@paulthorn6437Ай бұрын
Honestly, this applies to any niche hobby or fandom that people get deeply into. You want to have someone else to talk about the thing that eats up your mindshare, but most people only want to engage at a surface level of not at all.

I think one problem these days is that it's too easy to technologize your rides where any talk can turn to a dull recitation of zones and watts. That might interest your coach, sports physio, or DS if you have one. Anyone else will find it horridly dull. No one cares about your Strava. Now maybe if a ride had an interesting feature, the weather was spectacular one way or the other, or the scenery was interesting, normal folk can relate, but they aren't going to relate to physio stats unless they too are an endurance athlete, and even then it might be a stretch. I've never had the ick about the shaving. I did have an interesting talk with a lady about the relative difficulty of shaving around the chin as opposed to knees on lean legs. Conclusion: knees are way harder. I just think fuzzy legs sticking out of bibs look way unkempt. BTW: where did you find the funky jersey? Oops. Saw your answer to this later. Also saw the "F--- this. Let's Ride" socks and was reminded of this short by Phil Gaimon: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f61loZupsdTYqWw.html
