I've watched a 1000 reviews on leatherman products your the 1st to explain why that blade is designed that way, and your 💯 right thank you for opening my eyes to that.

As a biomedical engineer who works on anesthesia machines and critical high risk equipment , my signal has been the perfect tool and has allowed me to get by in hairy situations. 👍🏼

I am an engineer too. Can I ask how did it helped you? I read a lot of fan of multitool but I never read a real use case scenario that is not about trekking and cutting pieces of wood. All engineer I saw here have a little toolkit made of a scissor, some scredriver some tape and maybe a plier. Not very much more.

I carry the surge on my belt everyday for 7 years now , don't really notice the weight (way more useful) in an offbrand nylon sheath with velcro instead of push button. Anyway , you're right about the fact that everyone should carry some sort of multitool with them.

Diamond files really need to be used with as little pressure as possible, relying on the abrasive and very light strokes. Otherwise it'll chip off like you've shown

Enjoyed the opinion and logic on the Signal👍 My one possible supporting thought would be that if your using the signal as your emergency kit or "Bag" multitool then it should be a tool that is affordable enough to just leave in a kit. I think this supports selecting the Signal over other offerings from Leatherman that have been suggested in the comments. However there might be some other more affordable Leatherman options that would work as well. I myself have dedicated my Wave as my E bag multitool since I rarely need a multitool plier in my daily life since I work in the trades and have convenient access to pliers in my tool bag that is with me or in my vehicle 24/7. My daily edc multitool is a Victorinox One Handed Trekker which serves my personal daily edc needs quite well paired with a Keychain attached Victorinox Classic SD for the little scissors primarily.

Mine lives on the right hip of my belt, just behind my Buck Knife. I do use it all the time. Even for spreading peanut butter on a role! I’ve used all the tools, except the can opener, but it probably works well, like the rest do! My Wave now lives in a get home bag in my vehicle. It’s also a great tool!

A scissor feature on that tool would be great. Or if it be possible for leatherman to create one for this type of leather man and somehow create another blade and fit it inside the leather man.

I really like the design of Signal but it's falls into a middle of the road wasteland for me. Lacking some tools that I consider a must have and not small enough to justify a secondary tool for the days when I need a minimalist tool. I'm looking into the Skeletool with the hammer mod for a minimalist tool. I'm not an outdoors person so a saw isn't as much of a need compared to a file with metal cutter. I still want a saw but have used it less than the file by a lot. Good scissors are also a must for a full tool. For small, stranded wire, scissors can't be beat as a wire stripper once you develop a feel for it. One of the two features that I wish almost every multitool would take from the signal is the knife sharpener. Having that on board for days where you use your blade a lot but are away from home that thing would be great to get you by. The other is a hammer surface. The only other Leatherman I know of that has it is the Arc and it's way too expensive.

Own a Surge and have the same pouch for it but the extra amount of space is useful for instance u can fit an 1 AAA battery powered torch 🔦 small it can fit under the tool and still be able to snug clip it . Or a small head screwdriver with bits in its inner shell. Then hanging duck tape on carabiner. Or small pack of 3 inch length cable ties. Is just endless with a bit of fantasy8
@toolsonduty
@toolsonduty Жыл бұрын
But that would also add one more complication using the tool in the sheath. do you use that extra space?
@tothtibor2622
@tothtibor2622 Жыл бұрын
@@toolsonduty yes I do use that extra space that way as I've mentioned with the precision screwdriver paracord loop with electrical tape. Then one rubber strap ON SIDES for sharpie and "pencil " torch and other for 150 knipex cobra . Yes it is doe heavier but as Mechanical Fitter I'm use to heavier stuff then just that 🤙💪. It is obviously everyone's choice but if there is a space we'll I choose to use it wisely. 😉

I had a couple LM when i was collecting knives. Ive always respected LM products but they seemed heavy and pricey After i stopped collecting i grabbed a wave plus for half price. Its been my primary ever since, 2.5 years. Its seen abuse.. ive done almost zero maintenance. There are burn marks on the pliers, homemade flat precision bit after breaking the original, and losing the replacement. All ive done is sharpen the plain edge a few times and scrubbed it like a dish with dawn a few times Im sold, its heavy but not "big for nothing" at all and absolutely worth the money.. bit kit and all. If anybody is debating purchasing one, do it.

The sheaths used to be able to store the pliers while open tip down which maybe the reason why it’s loose. I haven’t carried a Leatherman in years so I can’t test it out.

The loose sheath is so that when you squat or kneel down the flexing of the sheath doesn't so easily pop the stud and the tool fall out.
@toolsonduty

That makes sense! However the tighter sheats never popped open for me whilst kneeling down or flexing. And if that extra space is intended for that purpose, i still think it’s a little much 😕

@toolsonduty
@toolsonduty Жыл бұрын
Hi! Tough question to answer. I lean towards the prepared mindset. So if I would carry only one, probably the signal. Practicality on the daily non-emergency basis: wave+ all the way. I do carry the signal religiously daily in my bag. The wave almost everyday on the belt, almost. I feel like it depends on why you want to carry a multitool. I hope that helps 🙈

No one should be using that "hammer" for driving nails. It's not exactly a hammer in the true meaning of the word. Literally, the sole purpose for that flat blunt area is for driving in tent stakes, NOT nails.
@toolsonduty

I didn’t mean that you should use it for that. I just said that I saw people using it for that and be fine. Just to state that it is obviously more robust than I thought.

Okay so writing at 2 minutes in (paused) what you're saying is: on the end 3 useless tools (hammer, clip, bit driver) but you can open bottles with it; HALF a firesteel as half of it is embedded in plastic; and HALF a straight blade. Not sure how you're gonna convince me to shell out the equivalent of $150 for something I can't even legally carry where I live.
@toolsonduty
@toolsonduty Жыл бұрын
I explain why the blade is that way and why I think it is good that way. I agree - it is not much of a firesteel, but it is one. I also say that I think the name signal speaks for itself. If you are in a pinch, you‘d rather have half a firesteel than none. Just my thoughts on it

@@toolsonduty I prefer the way Victorinox do the half serrated blade on the Soldier 08 and other models, with the straight part closest to the tang, for controlled cuts such as whittling wood, and the serrations nearer the end, for slicing through rope or fabric etc.

I think the glassbreaker is probably redundant -- I don't use this tool for survival, but it can almost certainly break windshield glass if you pull the awl out, lock the handles together with the tab, and then hit the window -- the hammer will prevent you from going through it, stopping it about 0.75 inches from the awl point, and instead tearing the windshield. If you're going for survival (or in general! I carry this for utility) I'd suggest a Volty, actually -- I just leave mine in the handle. It's a voltmeter that uses the Leatherman bit holder to retain itself, and the body of the leatherman for the probe. It seems like you're less likely to need to break a windshield, than to need to know the rough levels of batteries (You can figure it out from voltage, but it requires math you'd need to at least be familiar with) pcpoodle.com/collections/home/products/volty-bit-for-leatherman-multi-tool I mostly use mine for checking flashlight, camera, and vaporizer batteries, but it's come in handy for a lot of things I wouldn't have expected, just around computers and household stuff. Things I would just live without knowing were it not in my pocket.
@toolsonduty
@toolsonduty Жыл бұрын
That’s interesting! I agree, you probably would be able to break glass with some other part of the tool. Since I carry a wave on the belt and the bit kit in the Organizer, I figured why not tho can’t hurt. I‘ll check out the volty tho! Thanks for the tip!
