The Lark's Head knot. Very simple. On one cross-country flight I looked out on the wing and saw that knot. It held up to everything thrown at it.

if you do the second phase but wrap upwards you can make it friction hitch also. hard to untie, but sometimes you need a knot that wont untie.

@recklessroges2 жыл бұрын
That's like a Siberian hitch with extra steps. Your "Panic knot" is harder to undo once it has been under tension, and provides insufficient friction within the knot compared with a good knot. Too much of the knot in the video depends on the friction with the thing upon which it is tied; so it seems good on the skin of your fingers, but will require a large tail on any slippery surface or where it is continuously loaded and unloaded. With a little practice a bowline can be tied in under 3 seconds, can be under tension for years and still easy to undo.

Cool! Though starting around the post there's only one strand. Any way to make it with more strength/strands around the standing post?
@RiylanCorma2 жыл бұрын
Strength is determined by the breaking strength of the rope/cord. More passes around a post isn't going to help. But yeah, just pretend that the post is your hand.

There is another panic knot, put a half hitch into rope like truckers hitch, put your hand through the loop, pass the end around the post with the other hand , grab the end in the other hand and pull. The loop will come off your hand, tighten up and the knot will turn over and be a bowline knot. Can be tied in half second.

indeed, in all seriousness, and sort of off topic from knots please forgive me, lol, I have been trying lately to practice and coach myself to “remain calm and steadfast simultaneously”. It is my new personal rule, considering all the ridiculous fear mongering and overly panicking that so many, and even myself, participated in during 2020 and or 2021. And considering that personality-wise, I had always been sort of temperamental. Panicking was never a good solution and imo caused us all more harm overall. Well panicking does not ever seem to be a wise solution to any dire situatio eh? Anyways, now I got a good knot for it too. lol

@Hellsong892 жыл бұрын
Issue with this is A if you are as name states panic, last thing you want is to wrap rope around you hand. Its great way to delete your hand if what ever is on the another end pulls hard. Secondly not really good way to tighten this. I do like its easier to open than some knots but best panic knot is pull tight around the object, loop over and then into the main loop and start making slip knots over each other using last free loop, so essentially one slip knot secures one behind it. This is then easy to untie just by pulling while strong enough to hold basic stuff in place, but as with this, its not something you want to relay with your life.

Essentially you are tying a double timber hitch with only two wraps of the tail end instead of wrapping until you run out of rope.
@libertarian16372 жыл бұрын
This is nothing like a timber hitch which is a fast way to essentially make a fast slipping knot; a double timber hitch would simply involve an extra pass around the timber. The grip of this “knot” would very based on the material it was tied to as well as the material of the rope, where as a timber hitch can function well tied around nearly any shape of about any material and depending on the number of wraps out of about any rope. I wouldn’t trust this “knot” for anything; but as a pioneering instructor for more than 30 years while I may know of many many knots, I seem to go back to a few that are tied and true.

the two loops under the original loops make it NOT easy to untie. Dislike. Should be two half hitches outside the loop. Then it would resemble a rolling hitch.
@LeslieBergh2 жыл бұрын
I think this is a poor knot to teach people onsidering the other knots easy, secure and quick knots available.This knot is very dependant on being dressed properly, to achieve consistent results and being able to loosen it. This makes it a very cumbersome knot. Once a fair amount of tension gets applied to it you'll really struggle to undo it, if at all.
