I am so glad you had this Vidcon panel, and that you uploaded it so people not at Vidcon could watch. I'm in my forties now, about to row solo around the coast of Britain so am thinking about my past, as part of mental strength training for the expedition and because a tv series is going to be made afterwards and very few people who know me realise I had a traumatic past, and just assume I'm always happy and that my life is perfect. I was diagnosed with PTSD after years of struggling to get help and working out what was wrong with me. So many people just assumed I was being a difficult teenager, and the stigma of mental health has followed me throughout my career, especially in the health service, even though I had treatment and was pretty much OK once I received support. The stigma was way harder to deal with than the actual mental health condition, especially being in the UK and that it was still fairly taboo back then. I hate being defined by my past, rather than being defined by who I am today, and in that way the system is very much broken still. These conversations are making life and support much easier to access. I hope to start sharing more of myself and my past on my own channel over time, because these are things I will organically come face to face with on my expedition, especially as I get tired, afraid, or get asked tricky questions by the media. I want to be authentic and true to myself, but also to help others in some way so they know that everyone struggles. It is easy to present a perfect world through the photos we share online, especially at Christmas time, but in reality we all have ups and downs, and that is totally normal. So look forward to continuing this conversation, and well done on a really awesome panel, you guys were superb!
