An incredible country with great quality of life, beautiful nature, and thousands of animal species is a perfect choice for digital nomads. Recently, the Digital Nomad Visa for Costa Rica was launched and we couldn’t be more excited!
Before this visa, Digital Nomads had to arrive on a tourist visa and do dangerous and stressful border runs. Last year (2021) June, the law was approved, but we can finally start to benefit from it as of August 2022.
What are the main requirements of the Costa Rica Digital Nomad Visa?
* You are able to work remotely with technology: you can be employed by a legal company or be a freelancer.
* Being able to prove an income of $3000 USD monthly. It is arguable if you must have this income every month or if you can apply with savings that cover this monthly quantity. You need those bank statements; create a sworn statement that you do own this quantity; and it is convenient to add a legitimization from an accountant (if it was done outside of Costa Rica, it needs to be apostilled).
* If you want to apply with dependents, you would need to show an extra $ 1000 USD per person either spouse, child, or elderly adults you must look after.
Benefits of the Costa Rica Digital Nomad Visa:
* Its original duration is for 1 year, but you can extend it for 1 more year.
* You do not need to get a Criminal Background Check: the government will revise your background internally.
* You are not considered a tax resident for the whole year, even though you are staying in Costa Rica for more than 183 days.
* You do not need to pay import taxes for any equipment that you import (you usually do when they come from abroad).
If you want to live long-term or migrate to Costa Rica, then the Rentista Visa might be a better option for you because after 5-7 years you can apply for citizenship.
* You need to show an income of around $2500 income that WILL be arriving in your account every month for the next 2 years.
* You need to pay “CAJA” or healthcare which is around $ 300 USD monthly for Dentists.
