This is the movie that got nominated for the most Oscars this year, this is insanely impressive. Generally the Oscars tend to ignore movies that are too "out there" but this one was just too good to ignore. Hope it's gonna win Best Picture, it truly deserves it.

I love that "What IS this movie!?" & "I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't THIS!" are two phrases I keep hearing in relation to EEAAO.. especially by the end after we've been hit right in the feels over and over again, we all seem to collectively take a breath, look back at the movie, and go "WTF did I just watch? 🤯". It's great 😆

This is such a great movie, it displaced Amadeus as my favorite film, which held that spot for 30 some years. The action, the humor, the heart, and the ease with which they were able to translate to the audience the concept of the multiverse and how to traverse and benefit from it. Ke Huy Quan got his groove back, Michelle Yeoh is a contender for Best Actress, and Stephanie Hsu--with whom I'm not familiar as an actor--does an amazing job. Also there's the beloved Jamie Lee Curtis playing Michael Myers and and the legend James Hong (Lo Pan for my generation). I predicted six Oscar noms for this easy, with 11 on the outside, and it did indeed get nommed for 11 Oscars (though not all in categories that I would have predicted). Whatever, it won a bunch of awards already and the proof is in the pudding, FYI, the principal actors who played Evelyn and Joy and Waymond are all teaming up again for a series called American Born Chinese. I don't think it has anything to do with the story of this film, but it will be great to see them all together again in a year or two when it releases. Finally, as this film deals with the "attraction" of adopting nihilism in the face of loss or pain or regret, "Why Everybody Everywhere needs Waymond Wang" is a great video essay tonic on the power of his character, and how it goes against some firmly established Hollywood traditions can be viewed at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hZ2JocV42ODHkmw.html.

Its my new favorite movie of all time. If it makes you feel any better, I don't think you 'don't get it' yet. Having seen it 7 times in the the theater alone, its not so much that you didn't understand the whole thing, but that I think there's always a new way to look at it, a new detail a new 'Easter egg' so to speak. You could write a novel with all the themes that it touches on.

Remember the Kareoke machine "tax deduction" at the first IRS meeting? Waymond says at the time that Evelyn is a fine singer. Later we see an alternate universe where she is singing for a theater full of people, and sounding wonderful. I took great delight in what I consider to be a great joke. In one of her alternate lives, the one where she connects with rich Waymond, she had the life of a Michelle Yeo, world famous lady kung--fu master. They even use actual clips of Michelle from Michelle's past to explain how successful she was in that life. A similar joke was foisted on us in a confusing way when we see rich and famous actress Evelyn seated in that theatre and watching that universe's version of EEAaO, one which had a different ending to the movie.

This came out in the UK a fair bit after it did in the US so I'd heard how good it was and not much else other than "multiverse" and the casting. I went to the cinema the week it opened and it blew my mind. When the scene with the rocks happened it was silent in the cinema except for a few uncomfortable/nervous chuckles, but that just made it so much better. I feel the absurd nature of everything breaks you down to the point where the central part of someone desperate to find meaning and reaching out for that help hit home. I felt back then that if it didn't at least get a nomination for Best Picture something was wrong with the world. It isn't a film that will appeal to everyone (there are many who won't connect with it), but that's fine. We need more cinema that takes risks and tries different things rather than just going for mass appeal. Seeing it get 11 nominations was crazy, but awesome. The fact that it's Michelle Yeoh's first oscar nomination feels like a crime. Same for Jamie Lee Curtis. Ke Huy Quan not having had one before makes more sense given him not acting for years, but it was such a triumphant return.

And I love that EEAAO is true to its name by being a movie with almost every genre (family drama, romcom, comedy, action/adventure, martial arts, sci-fi/fantasy, absurdist/satire), have about 5 different themes, and 5 messages, in an actually cohesive, connected, touching but funny story.

I always tear up during Waymond's monologue about being kind when you don't know what's going on. This move came out at the perfect moment, where the world is just coming back from a global pandemic filled with a ton of hate, misinformation, and vitriol; and having Waymond tell everyone that during the moments you don't know what's going on, you must be kind to others, and most especially to yourself was such a much needed message. Which was a big theme I got from the film, of self-hate/disdain that Evelyn and Joy were feeling because they were experiencing universes where they were more than what they had personally felt in their own universe.

You have come up with some deep insights into this movie that I have not seen other KZfaqrs do. That is impressive. The idea that the triggers for their verse jumpings might actually be connected to aspects of the multiverse is a cool idea. I also like how you succinctly recognize how the abilities in kung fu or singing are not as relevant as an ability as connections with family in terms of importance.

18:17 Haha when you jokingly said if everyone with depression is actually dealing with all the multiverses in their head, you actually weren't far off. The writers/directors, the Daniels, have confirmed it's an allegory to all of us growing up in the age of the internet and smartphones. That because most of us have the internet at our fingertips, we have access to information and knowledge of everything, everywhere, all at once. And ALL this information and access to a constant news cycle from all over the world shows how absolutely chaotic the world is and is what's causing a lot of depression and nihilism in people. And then yes, this is further connected with one of their other messages which is that if you're feeling depressed and nihilistic, if you think everything sucks and nothing matters, then... you have the ability to choose what matters. Even in the stupidest worlds or lives, there's always something to love or care for, you can always choose to be kind and loving.

I was overwhelmed the first time I tried to watch it and stopped it after part 1. The second time I thought it was so funny and laughed a lot. The next time I found it so emotional. Another time I focused on the dialogue and realised how so many details connect across the span of the movie. It’s bonkers how much the Daniels throw at you, but at its core it’s such a beautiful story of family, struggle in many forms, connection and kindness. And although this has been told before this hits differently for some reason. Mind boggling that all 4 main actors are Oscar nominated. But my bias is Michelle Yeoh 😁

I’m not usually into “popular” popcorn style movies, like Marvel movies, but this is one of those cases where the critical acclaim from general audiences AND critics is so well deserved. So many complex ideas are addressed in a way that is digestible for non-philosophy nerds… absurdism vs nihilism especially.

The first Best Picture nominee I ever intentionally watched because it was a Best Picture nominee was Moonlight. I was absolutely floored at how good it was, and it kicked off a tradition of trying to see as many of the nominees as possible each year. I probably would have missed this movie if I hadn't started that tradition, and I'm so glad I did because for me it's the best movie of the year. I 100% understand the criticisms that the Oscars get for nominating movies that aren't very popular or widely watched, but going out of my way to watch the Oscar nominees (or potential nominees, or nominees for categories other than Best Picture) every year has really opened my eyes to how many genuinely good movies actually are being released--it's just hard to hear about them until awards season unless you're a deeply committed cinephile, which is a real shame.

The movie is about shifting your perspective, trying to understand and empathize with others. The first obvious hint is when she had to “switch shoes on her feet” (reference to “walk a mile in their shoes”, and “if the shoe was on the other foot”). Diedra started as Evelyn’s nemesis. Evelyn needed to learn to love everyone, even her worst enemy. She only truly “loves” Deidra at the end when she realizes that love solves more problems than fighting. There is a lot more to be said but this is a comment section, not a thesis paper. Glad you enjoyed it!

I believe the movie was at it's heart about depression and family relationships. The bagel represented "ending it all" because nothing matters. This uses the multiverse to show path's not followed and life not lived. The googly eyes are the exact opposite of the everything bagel (eyes = white with black center, bagel = black with white center). The googly eyes represented happiness and acceptance (as stated by the husband) and the bagel represented giving up and nothing matters (as stated by the daughter). When evelyn realized that she could go on destroying and making all her lives worst she was feeding into the grief but then she finally decided to do what her husband said and try to make her lives better and in turn the people around her's lives better. This is a beautiful movie and I think it's my fav of the year but I also LOVED RRR (the best indian movie). I would highly recommend it, it's very good.

Circles and circular objects are scattered throughout this work. Examples from this reaction video includes the party at the laundry mat when Evelyn is talking about life "going in circles." On the barren planet, instead of being any rock shape they were like marbles. Is there not a better symbol for infinity (everything, everywhere, all at once) than the circle. I can't claim these comments as my own brilliant insights but what I've picked up from conversations and reading.

@@crankfastle8138 I'll admit, Bruce Lee would have been better at executing the martial arts moves. And he actually WAS of Chinese descent. So he would have been a better fit in those respects. But I don't think he would have been as good at portraying the calm, controlled, philosophical, inner peace side of the character. That's where Carradine was the better fit. And to me, that was the most fascinating aspect of the show. A young Keye Luke would have worked great though.

One of the modern masterpiece. Besides an interesting theme done well (multiverse), over-the-top hilarious action sequences, great editing and heartwarming drama, it's philosophically thought-provoking too. It tells the opposing approach to existentialism that questions our life's purpose and cripples most of us. Pessimistic nihilism vs. optimistic absurdism. The yinyang of everything bagel (black outside, white inside) vs google eyes (white outside, black inside). Empty void inside vs pure core inside. "Nothing matters so might as well destroy everything" vs "Nothing matters so might as well enjoy life". Waymond taught Evelyn and us the latter.

This film speaks to me deeply. Joy and Evelyn take the entire journey from nihilism to existentialism in 149 minutes. In a materialist universe, there is no objective meaning to existence. Impersonal forces drive the evolution of the universe and there is no goal all of this is working toward. For many, like the Wangs, this realization leads to a destructive, apathetic place. "Nothing matters, so fuck it. I'll do whatever I want." Believing that it was the only alternative led me to hang on to god long after I no longer believed one existed. After I discovered humanism and existentialism, where Evelyn and Joy end up, I realized something. The fact that nothing else tells me what I should value means that the things I choose to value mean more to me than they did before. There is no universal standard that tells me where to invest my time, attention, passion, care, or values. As a result, when I choose one of those things, it is because it really matters to me. The fact that there is no external meaning of life means the meaning I choose to imbue it with is more profound. As Evelyn whispers to Joy, "Nothing matters. We can do whatever we want." Whenever I watch this movie, the tears flow and I feel seen. Thanks for inviting me into your experience with it. On a mostly unrelated note, the multiverse presented in this film is very similar to one described by the Many Worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics as proposed by Hugh Everett III. Many worlds is a respectable interpretation that basically takes something that is well understood and follows it to its logical conclusion: when a quantum system is isolated, it exists in multiple states, e.g. an unentangled electron will be both spin up and spin down at the same time. When it becomes entangled, for example when its spin is detected in a lab, there is a probability that it will be measured in one of those states, but until it is entangled, it is understood, not just that we don't know its spin, but that it has both properties. Everett basically says that these superpositions continue even when a system is entangled. If we are performing the electron spin experiment, there is part of the system where we observe the electron as spin up and another where we observe it as spin down. Both are equally real. It becomes useful then to describe those two parts of the system as universes that split from each other at the moment the spin is measured. Hollywood and literature that deal in the multiverse always place the moment universes diverge at moments when we make choices. That's not what Many Worlds says. Splitting happens all the time when things entangle with each other. That said, EEAAO feels like the same sort of multiverse. The differences are largely subtle, though there are outlying universes that are radically different: hot dog fingers, anime, child's drawing, rock, and pinata universes come to mind. In the same way, there are universes in Many Worlds where only the unlikely things happened and everyone thinks the laws of physics are bizarrely different because they only see the outlying experiment results. Sean Carroll is a great resource on Everettian quantum mechanics in The Big Picture (an examination of a materialistic philosophy and worldview) and Something Deeply Hidden (a look specifically at Many Worlds). Both are written at a popular level and assume very little scientific training. I highly recommend them. The Big Picture in particular plays with a lot of the philosophical themes that drive EEAAO and he keeps the chapters bite sized. Keep being awesome.

I think the "I love you" versw jumping trigger is so much sadder than it lets on. Essentially you have to do something wildly unpredictable in the current universe to take yourself out of it to follow another life path. I felt like the movie was saying that the likelihood of someone telling Jamie lee Curtis's character that they genuinely love her was so unlikely it could be used as a jumping pad to another universe. Of course, it could just mean what that in that very moment its unlikely, but when you tie her story arc about being unloved, it can't help but to feel a little intentional.

What I got out of this movie: every person has an ideal reality, where they are truly happiest. It's not necessarily rooted in how successful or skilled they are, but just in having what most makes them feel at peace. Toward the end, when Evelyn was fighting all the jumpers, what she wound up doing was giving each of them their ideal reality (the old man and "big nose" found companionship, the other man got his neck fixed, another (played by co-director Daniel Scheinert) got to be dominated, and Chad got to have something sitting on his head controlling him). Deirdre, it turned out, just needed to feel like she was worth loving. For Evelyn, a crucial part of her ideal existence was having Waymond and Joy with her, in all their dysfunctional glory together (and for Joy, it was just feeling like her mother cared for and _understood_ her). In essence, the old adage about the grass not being greener on the other side.

My Review * Directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, Everything Everywhere All at Once is a movie about nothing. More precisely, nothing matters. * At first, I was not too fond of the movie. The “over-the-top” humor was too much for my sensibility. On the surface, it is a tired story about a dysfunctional multi-generational Chinese family in America. Underneath, it is about “nihilism” across the multiverse. * I notice more on each rewatch: (1) the set design, (2) the symbolism of circles everywhere, (3) the range of acting, and (4) the fight choreography. I realize that the over-the-top humor was intended to shock the viewers out of complacency and to think “outside the box.” * Michelle Yeoh, the lead actress, gave the performance of her life. Jamie Lee Curtis, a supporting actress, was hilarious. Stephanie Hsu, a supporting actress, gave a breakout performance. Ke Huy Quan, a supporting actor, gave an award-winning performance. Hey, just hopped back on your channel after the House of the Dragon reactions, some of the reactions after that wasn't for me so I never check it out ( I am a subscriber don't worry lol). Can't wait to see this journey you are about to embark. I watch all kinds of movies so I've already checked those movies out and can't wait for your reactions to them. Please Please Please, I hope you get to finish the nominees by the time the Oscars come out and can't wait to see your personal rankings.

This movie was a fastball right down the middle of my tastebuds. I went in a huge fan of Yeoh and watched both Yes, Madam and the Wong Kar-wai film In The Mood For Love to prep. I also understand there are people with a background not unlike Evelyn’s or Joy’s who related to it and got more out of it. It’s my favorite movie of 2022 (RRR is right behind) and the best film I’ve seen in quite a while.

Absurdism is actually less so a comedy sub genre and more so a philosophical theory. Coined by the French philosopher Albert Camus, it's the theory that, because there is no inherent meaning in life, we have greater freedom to give it meaning ourselves. Camus distinguished between two types of suicides in his philosophy: The real kind and the philosophical kind. By the latter he means trying to give your life meaning through outside sources. For example the belief in a god. For Camus this irrational behavior, not recognizing the absurdity and meaninglessness of life is also a form of suicide (albeit an intellectual one). The only recommendable response to the absurdity of life in Camus' eyes is the rebellion against it: Aka giving it your own meaning. This film explores that through Joy seeking suicide, before ultimately recognizing that "nothing matters" isn't this terrible thing. If nothing matters, we are free to follow our own paths and make our own rules. It's actually a very freeing thought, if you look at it that way.

Looking forward to the other reactions to these movies. You might have some trouble finding these movies to stream because many of these movies got limited releases, so unless you live in LA or New York (or like I do in the SF Bay Area) you might not have had any notion some of these movies came out. Good to see you branch out into movies outside of the mainstream. I've been a film buff for so long, I sometimes forget most people only ever see or hear about mainstream movies and miss out on so many good films.

Pretty much just scene after scene gets me to tear up. It starts with "somehow this feels like it's all my fault", then his big payoff line ("laundry and taxes") but just gets bigger when you get that last "fight" between Evelyn and Joy and Evelyn's fighting stance is to just reach out to her daughter, then the just... brilliance, majesty of the editing as they flip through universes frames at a time. Movie is so so so so so so good

The point of the film is that nothing matters, and that we put meaning to life, we make it matter. The small things in life makes something as pointless and absurd as life meaningful. Well, is not the point of the film, is what I took away from it. Maybe the connections we make also give life some meaning.

I don't think this movie will win because it doesn't have the gloss that Academy voters usually prefer and I haven't seen the others to really be able to judge whether it should win, but it would certainly put a smile on my face if it did.

The Oscars are just about what a small coterie of rich people think kf movies. It's heavily biased by genre as you point out. Sci-Fi isn't some shallow genre for kids, it's often exceptionally deep with real themes and human stories. I'd argue it actually carries more dramatic weight sometimes precisely because it can go places these more "grounded" films cannot.

This film is a masterpiece. And the reason that a lot of older people don't like it or don't understand it is because they haven't come to grips with the how the modern world is, what generational trauma is and what having the internet be an integral part of every day life means.

For me whats so interesting is that they pulled off this absurdit film that is also deeply and explicitly Asian American, and it was a wild success. I mean if they'd pulled this off 20 years ago (around the time the matrix came out) it could have been done, sort of, but it would have been an oddity. A cult underground film that no one watched because the characters are all Chinese and they actually speak Chinese with subtitles A LOT. They even intersperse it with English meaning you need to flick your brain between subtitles and English listening. As i say it wasnt that long ago this would have gone nowhere. If it went anywhere it would have been as a remake with an all white family because "regular viewers" i.e. white audiences would have found the Asianess to be off putting. It's nice to see we've moved on.

If you love something, let it go lol. When Evelyn says yes to her daughter's request of letting her go and let her make her own decisions, that isn't tragic. It's necessary and stops the controlling, overbearing parenting that could ensure otherwise.

Yeah the concept of the multiverse has the tendency to become too big and too convoluted to manage after a while. DC comics learned this decades ago before Marvel was even a concept, with their own multiverse growing so large and complex to manage they just had to reboot the entire thing via a large multiverse spanning story where it was destroyed. Of course they'd walk that back eventually and slowly reintroduce the multiverse as the years went on. This movie as insane as it was with the multiverse concept, it was surprisingly easy to follow it all, and grounding it within the family worked so well.

The real lesson of this movie is that women need to listen to men more. If Evelyn had listened to her father, she would have been much more successful; and if she had respected her husband, she would have been happier and less stressed-out. Just sayin'. Don't shoot the messenger.
