My understanding of the game's story with all this cool new information I never thought to dig for is that Corvus occasionally messes with the simulation specifically to keep you immersed, keep you from having a chance to question anything, or at least to distract you when you do start questioning. It hurts the simulation's accuracy, but Corvus would decide that it's worth it if it keeps the Player calm and contained. Corvus is probably saying "It's just a game, don't think about it too hard" with such tricks.

The naming scheme behind CORVUS goes even beyond the whole raven imagery (Corvus being the latin name for Raven). The corvus was was also a military device used during the time of of ancient Rome. There is was used by their navy to board enemy ships and take them over, just like CORVUS does over the DNI of the different team members.

If anyone wants a quick rundown on what the actual story of BO3 is before watching (especially since the video gets some things wrong), I've got you covered: All of the missions except for Black Ops, New World, and Life are taking place in Taylor's memories, but not exactly as we the player experience them. Before any in-game events, the events of those missions occur in a similar way, but instead of Player, it's Taylor going with Hendricks to track someone down. The person we see as Taylor in game is actually someone named Dylan Stone. Hall, Maretti, and Diaz are also stand-ins for three other operatives named Alice Conrad, Joseph Fierro, and Javier Ramirez. None of these four were augmented or had DNIs. (So Conrad was not interfaced with the way Hall was, she was interrogated via more traditional methods before being executed by Taylor.) Then the events of the levels Black Ops and New World occur, exactly as seen in-game. After all of his old team were killed for defecting, Taylor was put in command of the three we just spoke about. The player does not die immediately at the end of Black Ops. They are sent to a hospital and given emergency treatment, and implanted with a DNI alongside Hendricks. The training we see in New World does actually happen in "present time." However, Player doesn't survive the procedure, but somehow they "infect" Taylor via some weird Corvus shenanigans. From this point on, the real world Player is dead, but their consciousness lives on in control of Taylor's body. Taylor at this point is basically trapped in his own subconscious and/or the Frozen Forest. Hendricks begins to suffer the actual symptoms we see in the game, but not in those contexts (since again, those events aren't actually happening). The final mission, Life, is actually the final mission chronologically. The first part of it takes place in the real world, where you play as Player in control of Taylor's body. This is true up until Player shoots themself, at which point the level entirely exists within the "mindscape" up until the DNI purge. This purge effectively eliminates everything within the Frozen Forest except for Taylor, putting him back in his body. Why we experience Taylor's previous missions but modified isn't entirely clear. Also Kane was in a relationship with Taylor at some point. It's also unclear if she knows that Taylor isn't actually the one controlling his body during the actual events of the game. Any questions?

Black Ops 3’s campaign would have been intriguing if the twist was actually conveyed properly instead of being in rapid fire mission text that you would think is just for aesthetic purposes Treyarch wanted to make something cool but then didn’t bother actually leaving tangible narrative hints and expects you to read a comic to understand more.

My opinion is that it had cool concepts and solid ideas, but extremely poor execution. It saddens me too because BO3 campaign has some imagery like the Frozen Forest or the giant hearts and the weird babies that stick out with me after playing it through the first time. They delved so hard into the weird aspect of the story concept they had and I love it, but it eventually proved itself to be a double-edged sword that tries to say so many things but ends up saying nothing.

You did a great job covering most things in the story, but there's still so much you didn't cover. My favorite weird mystery: Reznov might secretly be a major player in this story. There's a LOT of smoke here, iIm not sure if there's a fire but it's interesting. First of all, Reznov didn't actually die at Vorkuta. Look up John Trent from the Black Ops 1 CIA server, as well as the serial numbers in BO1 translating to "Reznov is dead, or is he dead, there was no body, is he who he says he is" We know that the test subjects have an influence over Corvus from Jae Xiong. With that fact in mind, there are two collectibles in Bastogne that are quite strange and out of place. We have a Russian Field Compass and an Ushanka Hat. First of all, the Ushanka Hat was later used in Black Ops 4 as Reznov's special item. And secondly, the Soviet Union had zero participation in this battle and there's no reason for these items to be here. My idea on this is that this is Reznov's influence on Corvus shining through. The mission takes a strange turn after Bastogne, as we are suddenly in Stalingrad. None of our 2060 characters have any connection to Stalingrad, as far as we know. But Reznov does. Corvus constantly shows us crows and ravens. For the ravens, the youtube video by DX "Chasing Rabbits" has a great explanation. As for the crows, the first time we ever see Reznov in World At War, we see crows picking at the dead. We see in the Black Ops 3 Data Vault that the CORVUS program actually took test subjects from Vorkuta Labor Camp. We also see that Sebastian Kreuger asked the CIA for information about Reznov (amongst other BO1 characters). Both Corvus and Reznov were victims of mind control experiments, and tried to turn that mind control against the people who first perpetrated it, obsessive about revenge on these people. In the last mission, Corvus leads Kane to dying the same way Dmitri did. As this happens, Corvus says "I... was born in the minds of others." Taylor's Journal entry from the last mission is a jumbled mess as he is infected by Corvus. But one string of text stands out. For some reason, Corvus spells out the following phrase: "Delta-Romeo-Alpha-Gold-Oscar-Victor-India-Charlie-Hotel-Kilo-Romeo-Alpha-Victor-Charlie-Hotel-Echo-November-Kilo-Oscar-Sierra-Tango-Echo-India-November-Echo-Romeo-Tango-Hotel-Echo-Sierra-Echo-Mike-Echo-November-Mike-Uniform-Sierra-Tango-Delta-India-Echo" of course, if you spell this out it is D R A G O V I C H K R A V C H E N K O S T E I N E R T H E S E M E N M U S T D I E There's so much more to the Reznov mystery but it gets into the weeds of the Black Ops 4 "story" and is outside the scope of this video. There's also plenty more to BO3 including Nightmares, the data vault, tons of interpretations on the last mission. But anyway, it's nice to see a big channel stepping into what I consider my super niche obsession.

I know this is a year later now, but I’m hoping you get to see it. I’ve known about that last journal entry for years and I have never seen anyone mention it in a single video or comment! Now that you’ve expounded on that and mentioned the two items you an find on the Hall level I’m convinced that Reznov’s consciousness is definitely in the DNI “system” if that makes sense to you, but I haven’t quite figured out how. However, i had never heard about John Trent or Kreuger mentioning Reznov, but now I want to know more about that…

The multiplayer was fantastic, the 4 player online co-op for the story was awesome, especially since things would change, like on the first mission alone you might be sitting off to the right side instead of the left, or instead of being behind the window in the interrogation room you could stack up on the door. The only thing I never really liked was how confusing the story the game was trying to tell was. Like I somewhat got it but never fully processed it.

Another take I read about regarding the story was that the player dies at the end of New World but his mind is scrambling so he thinks he’s ok and about to enter surgery. Then yes, player relives Taylor’s memories with constructs in place, however he’s also fighting for control over Taylor’s body and Corvus has woken up, thanks to player’s and team’s new memories. But Hendricks, having gone out of surgery, likely calls Kane to try to get through to “Taylor”, as his team, who also interfaces with him, die off one by one. The “Taylor” and “Stay with me” is her first thinking she woke up the real Taylor and then realizing she didn’t. Also the very distinct “Where is Taylor going?” As if she’s playing along. By the end of Lotus Towers, Hendricks has had it. Having had second thoughts about the Stone mission, having had to kill his comrades, having lost his entire new team on the first op of a seemingly much safer job, having witnessed his friend and his whole team die off due to a virus, he’s had it and he goes to attack Coalescense. And that’s where the simulation ends and Life mission happens.

fun fact, if you upgraded the cyber core abilities enough you can take control of every robot in the game except for the gi units

I played it when it came out, and completed, I didn't understand shit until the ending where player was in Taylor mind, then I understood a little bit more but still i didn't care about understanding it more than with the simple thing that it provided me

It did take me a few play throughs but how I interpreted the story was the belief that cyber augmenting are the future for infantry soldiers as we can see. Stronger, faster, more aware, sturdier, and so on you become super human having your body augmented with technology. But with that benefits if technology you also have their weaknesses and the biggest weakness as we seen portrayed with Corvus a computer virus and how Corvus completely messed with the player and everyone to the point of insanity. So it raises a question of which is better augmentations or natural. Training and being ol natural has it’s limits cause the human body has limits and that is were augmentations excel at but as I mentioned with cybernetics wired to your brain you are subjected to viruses and hacks (as we can even see in gameplay) and possibly even EMP type attacks that can shut down your cybernetic parts possibly even killing you.

BO3 is Deus Ex: CoD Edition and the soundtrack is godly, Ignition and Safehouse are just *chef's kiss* They just chose an extremely inconvenient way to tell the story.

To be honest, I didn't really enjoy this game when compared to previous two black ops and even Advanced Warfare. To the point that when the game crashed on me during the section with Hall and the frozen forest I didn't end up picking the game back up again (it didn't help that the crash also deleted all my progress). I felt the same way for the most part, that I was just kinda bored and it wasn't at all what I was expecting since I had really enjoyed BO 1&2 and as a result I actually stopped playing CoD until Black Ops Cold War came out. But otherwise your break down of the game was once again really well done and I am looking forward to seeing what game you go over next.

I never finished this campaign annoyingly so I was kind of lost on this video but yeah could've been better because I was bored when I played so I tried to play it with friends but never we finished it. But this campaign will always stay in my memory because playing this story was when I started to believe in ghosts LOL I was eating my dinner while playing left my chips (I'm British) went down stairs for a minute came back up and they were gone. Parents and dog was downstairs and my friend who I was playing the campaign with didn't hear anything through the mic. We were also on the 1st mission so I know I didn't eat them LOL. Anyway BO3 was my most played COD game with multiplayer and zombies with this story wasn't so complicated and boring to play would've probably been the best COD game.
