Noland’s story is so tragic he was such an epic man but his name and decedents were ruined because of some king

Just a note, this is a big part of Sanji I enjoy when they got on the ship, he said that he didn't mind sacrificing Usopp to save Nami yet he showed up to put himself in the line of fire to save Usopp

Oda does flashbacks so well because they always give only a snapshot of other people's lives as it impacts the current story but we see that these characters have their own stories and this is just where it intersects with our heroes.

I would like to say a lot of people in Skypeia did their research on Eneru. Wyper knew about his devil fruit power and obtained sea prism stone. The white beret leader and the shandorian village chief learned about Eneru destroying his home island of Bilka so they arent shocked he would plan to destroy skypeia too... Everyone is so competent!

The Noland Kalgara flashback is one of my favorites in the series

The funny thing about Robin giving names to everyone is a cool plotpoint. She still doesn't feel really part of the crew so she doesn't use their names yet. After some things later she will feel part of the crew and will call everyone by their name. :)

Usopp and Nami's stuff around Enel is just peak fucking comedy for me, it's so goddamn silly and then Sanji just had to be a cold badass needing a light - and having done his stealthy shit in the engine room, but also also Usopp stays back to grab Sanji after. But then the flashback, the tragedy of Montblanc Noland; not a liar, not a fool, but a man of great compassion. What a flashback it was too, the plague, the conflict of faith and science, the culture of the Shandorans and their Gods, Shandora how it was, the memories from the snake Nola, it brings all these once aggressive forces to the crew together in a single cause, a promise to be kept - carried forth generations later, a desire, a dream, a will. And I continue to be haunted by the sfx they use for the bell, it's so otherworldly yet melancholic at the same time. And Luffy's speech to Nami, about wanting to ring the bell so Cricket will know, so he wouldn't kill himself diving for something that's in the sky. Moments like these are why Luffy, despite his silliness and idiocy, is one of if not the greatest anime protagonist for me.

Honestly though isn't this the best written plot ever? So many twists and turns and I tell you rewatching Skypeia Arc after knowing everything is a different experience!

“I was just about to ask… for a light” this moment made Sanji my favorite character and he has NOT gone lower from that since!!

It really dumbfounds me that so many people consider Skypea as boring filler, and recommend new viewers to skip it. This is one of the most amazing, interesting, and heart-breaking stories in the series, but they say to skip it pretty much because it doesn't happen in the Blue Sea. That's an injustice as great as what happened to Calgara and Noland.

I really like Sanji and Usopp’s friendship. I think Usopp is probably one of the few men Sanji has never had to impress or compete with in his whole life (Luffy too - but he’s the captain so it’s different dynamics), especially if you know his whole backstory, his relationship with other men is always somewhat aggressive, even with those he cares about like the Baratie cooks, so to have a weaker guy who has no interest in competing with him, and who he has no need to impress…is probably one of the most healthy male relationships Sanji has ever had. And it’s a subtle friendship that really sticks around the whole of pre-time skip

The writing in this arc is absolutely stellar, the way everything falls together makes this one of the top arcs on my list. Especially some of the smaller details you might not think about. For example, if Noland had kept the gold when he left the island initially, the king would have been far more lenient when they returned there 5 years later, since clearly the gold had come from somewhere. Then the reason that they left the gold behind tied in with the rest of their time on the island, making it all flow so organically. For sure a tragedy, but really well written.

4:05 I understand why you didn't win this, as it's not made clear at all in this translation, and is a rather crude joke anyway, but I feel I should still explain it. When Luffy talks about the "golden ball", he uses the word "Kintama" (I think that's how you spell it?), which can also mean "testicles". So when he says "I can't get this Kintama off", he is without realizing it making a mastubation joke, which is why Aisa yells at him. 24:59 I also love Norland ending with "Are you _that afraid_ of your gods!?" It might have put Calgera on a way of thinking that he wasn't on before. 36:47 I'd also lo point out that it's "god" invading. That must have stung espicially hard to Calgara, as he and his people had thrown off worshiping his false gods just five years ago. So now to be told that this man is "God" must have felt like his demons were coming after him.

Noland's backstory, the moment we all fell in love with Sanji (again), Luffy's plan, these just are some on the best Skypiea episodes, and only better to come!!

Some fun observations: The gold ball on Luffy's hand is just 1 long, episode-spanning testicle joke (kintama). :D Jaya, being close to the Knock-Up-Stream whenever it emerges (and its volcano), likely had a lot of earthquakes before the tragic one that knocked up half the island. Thus the earthquake that trapped Noland, as well as possibly the enduring superstitious beliefs (recurring natural disasters have that effect). Nola being virtually immune to all attacks by everyone except Enel and his OP fruit abilities and how comparatively easily its parent and grandparent were killed by Noland and Calgara shows the massive difference in the current martial ability of our crew and Wyper when compared to those 2 legends.

01:25 Sanji: "If it's for Nami-san's sake, I don't care if you die" 07:23 Sanji saving Usopp and Nami by sacrificing himself. Sanji gets much hate for the things he sometimes says. People fail to see it's just a façade since his actions contradict these words. Personally, I love his contradictory nature and everything else about him.

One of my favourite Sanji moments, and a highlight of why I like Oda’s writing as a whole. The fact that the characters bluff the entire time. Sanji tells Usopp that they’re running for the goal, and that he would sacrifice Usopp to save Nami…only for him to be the one delaying and going for the bigger picture, and to technically take a bullet saving Usopp. It’s the same as in Alabasta where Zoro says that Sanji only saves girls - only for him to go running for Usopp and Chopper, saving Ussop’s goggles on the way. Sanji does it the most, but Nami, Usopp (obviously), and even Zoro often lie about their true feelings and motives, and it’s often done more subtly than this scene which keeps things really interesting

I had forgotten this back story of Noland and watching this video made me appreciate just how deep, complex and tragic the story was. We all highly appreciate Kozuki Oden's story - but this has to be on par with it, no?!

When I started watching One piece proper, this was the saga that was out (waaay back in 2004). After Arlong Park got me invested, I had been watching the show for hours a night to get through the episodes to get caught up to the release schedule. Alabasta was fresh in my mind and it is for sure one of the best sagas it's emotional pulls, but Skypiea is my favourite. A know of many people that rate this as one of the weaker sagas (just imagine right?) but there is just so much more to this saga. The scale of the destruction up to this point, the constant overwhelming threat of eneru with the fit of Luffy's devil fruit being a perfect counter to him, the delving into the wider scope of the history of the area and it's peoples along with the ponoglyph reveals, it just hooked me. I caught up to the release at around episode 183 and waiting for the next week to pass to see what was going to happen was just agonizing. I've been watching week by week since. Been a very large part of my life at this point. It's one of those shows I really struggle to convey to people who haven't seen it. It's bad enough trying to recommend someone to watch a 12 episode modern show theses days, trying to ask someone to start one with over 1000 is just impossible xD So having this series on your channel has been a joyful stroll through memory lane and seeing your reactions and enjoyment has been fantastic. I hope that next week the vote keeps this going, there is still so much more brilliant story ahead and many many more moments that will just blow you away for sure.

Noland’s backstory is my favorite part of skypeia. His background with Calgara and the Shandians makes everything in the arc more meaningful. Oda is the King of lore. Everything is connected, everything matters, and fans will try to keep up.

Noland's backstory was so tragic, it always pulls at my heart strings... It's very relatable for me... ...I had a best friend which I knew from grade school. She suffered from brittle bone disease. We were best friends throughout our childhood, but lost touch when her parents moved away. We promised to see one another, again, in our old hometown. Same day of her departure. We promised to come back there. I did go back every year on that day, but she never came. two years ago, i learned that she died in an accident, when falling down the stairs to her basement cellar... ... ... Much like Noland and Cagara... ...I cannot see my friend again... ...

In episode 187 I think you misunderstand. You see 100 villagers died of the plague and now they are doing one sacrifice...

People often believe that Jaya was split in two by just one big KnockUp Stream. However this is likely untrue. The big earthquake that half buried Noland (and possibly others before that) were probably caused by KnockUp Streams. They kept hitting Jaya from different directions and little by little the land became unstable. So when the big one came, it was enough to basically explode that half of the island to the White White Sea. That's my interpretation at least. As far as I know, this hasn't been officially confirmed.

About win 5881: There's a reason Robin doesn't use the crew's given names but calls them by their roles aboard the ship. We learn about it in the next saga. Also, she calls Usopp "Long nose" because at this point in the story, Usopp doesn't yet have a specific role on the ship. This is also explored in the next saga.

I'm going to save my proper thoughts about the Skypiea arc for next video so for now I'll just comment that Enel really is such an underrated villain in the grand scheme of One Piece. He was like one step up from Crocodile in that he also had control over the island he lived on although unlike Crocodile his control was much more apparent and arguably more encompassing. He was one of the first villains in the series where opposing him meant risking the entire island turning against you and did much to develop the running theme of rebelling against authority. Then there's the man himself, his cockiness is wonderfully paired with the fact that he really couldn't care less about any of his subjects. Then when you learn more about his past and the fact that his army just showed up from Birka and asserted control, displacing the native Skypiean leader, it starts to become a pretty clear-cut metaphor for colonization but I'll elaborate more on that next video.
