Wheelchairs are magical, precisely engineered devices that give unparalleled freedom to their users. Like their owners, every wheelchair is unique in its own way. No less is true about Helga, my (sorry Jane, it's a technicality) closest companion.

My custom wheelchair is being built right now. I can hardly wait. I love how colorful you are! I wish I could’ve committed to a chair color haha, I just ended up going with polished titanium. Thank you so so much for this video. I wish I had seen it months ago.

OMG I have tose tires...NEVER AGAIN...cheap rubber. I went through a set in a couple of months. I thought Kenda Quick Trax were bad...but nope. At least those lasted 6 - 7 months. Beautiful colours on that chair...you wouldn't think purple and orange go together, but that's a nice looking chair! In Canada TiLite is known as Permobil Manual...that threw me at first.

Thank you for this! I’m waiting for insurance approval for this exact model, the Aero T. Huge upgrade from my current one from Ki mobility. Will have a new e-fix drive, and an armadillo backrest. I can’t wait for it but also a bit nervous about it.

I absolutely love the back on your chair (and the colors). My chair is a similar size, but my DME demanded I get a higher back despite not being comfortable. Can I ask you how high/tall your back is?
@CharlotteThroughTheWeb
@CharlotteThroughTheWeb 2 жыл бұрын
I believe it is around 8 inches. It is the short back, but with the adjustment tubes removed. It's the shortest you can get it without a custom job. It used to be 13. 5 inches, but it hurt my back and bruised my arms a lot. I went back a year latter with that documented and insurance forked out for the short one. They tend to push for a higher one at first because it can take time to develop the core strength.

Regarding the adjustability, why would you want to change the casters? Your ultralite wheelchair has to be 5 pounds heavier with all these add ons...is it?
@CharlotteThroughTheWeb
@CharlotteThroughTheWeb Жыл бұрын
Note, this was a hot minute ago, so I don't remember exactly what I said. There are lots of reasons why a person would want to change their castors. A lot of people tend to move from larger castors to smaller ones as they gain experience as large ones help roll over larger objects and the smaller ones have a smaller turn radius. Honestly, at this point if I changed them it would be a a style thing only, so I haven't. I do regularly pull them out to service them and replace the bearings when they need it though. As to the weight, it is actually lighter than when I got her, if you don't count the power assist. Yeah, the brackets all probably weigh an ounce or so, but the removal of the hardware for anti tips, lowering of the backrest that actually doesn't have insert posts at all, just the frame and fabric, swapping the handrims, and swapping to a less-wide camber tube all more than offset the weight increase. Honestly though, I, like many people, have an ultralight for the ergonomics, rather than the weight itself. The balance and tuning of the frame makes it much more agile and energy efficient than lower "tiers" of chair. I can actually lift my friend's whole mobility scooter into the back of a van and I frequently go places towing my power assist with it turned off. In my chair though I can open the door of a building with a step up and get inside on my own, whereas in a standard chair, even the nicer ones, I struggle to get over those 1/4 inch flooring transfer strips without falling flat on my face. So for me it saves more fatigue for me to not have to awkwardly dig around in a backpack looking for my phone or wallet every time I need it than it would for me to not be carrying that extra ounce or two. It also means that, if I just need my essentials (tools, phone, inhaler, and credit card) I don't need a purse or backpack at all. I am never caught without them, which is important when having an asthma attack in the garage or when my footplate screw snaps in half in the middle of an airport terminal. Hope this helped!

@@CharlotteThroughTheWeb what a great in depth answer. This helped A LOT! However, I was asking why would anyone adjust the angles of casters? Sorry if I didn't ask right. Would that be for the reason you cited?
@CharlotteThroughTheWeb
@CharlotteThroughTheWeb Жыл бұрын
@@morgancalvi6675 Ahh! Thank you! So, generally, you want the castor angle to be 90 degrees. On some racing chairs, they angle them a bit to help keep the chair straight, but that is a different thing. If something happens though and you switch the wheels or you increase the dump (lowering the butt so you sit in a bit of a pocket) of the chair, we'll then the rest of the frame's angle with the ground has changed a bit. We don't want that, we want them at 90 degrees. But with the ability to adjust the angle, you can now make those kinds of changes to the rest of the chair safer. Wheelchairs are really fun to do work on because, when you change one part, it has little following adjustments all across the chair. Especially with a chair usually seeing 5-10 years of use, it helps to be able to change up to adjust with your body, style, part availability, etc.
