Oops, never used them so these new gouache tutorials are great. Please do more, I'd love to get something out of them. Like you, I'm a watercolourist at heart. Very good explanation of the different whites, I've always wondered what the differences between them meant. Thank you Emma, you're a Star. 🤗🎨💗

I have been a calligrapher for over 40 years and used gouache in place of ink. You should try writing with it with a broad nib.

Emma, I really enjoyed your new pieces using gouache! Beautiful, thoughtful, clever. It truly is a different medium, but like you, for me, I prefer the "alive" nature of fresh watercolor & its transparency. Loved the floral pieces you created in this video. Well done! Many thanks & continued health. Frances Turano Denver, CO USA

It's interesting that you loved it enough to go out and bought a lot of colors. For me, I have a lot of water colors but for gouache and acrylic I just have a white one and a black one.

Great video. I believe using gouache along with water colors is really handy when you want an opaque lighter color or darker color on top of the translucent watercolor. They are really fun to do splatter with also.

I use Canson for every paint I use - acrylic, watercolors (paints and pencils), and now gouache paints. I recently bought a cheap set of gouache paints from Michael's, and I swatched the paints to make sure of their opacity.

Thanks for that informative intro to gouache, I have wondered about it and love the effects you got on those flowers but I can see I would waste paint....one of the reasons I do like watercolors is how you can reactivate and use what is left.....acrylics I like too, but again the clean up and waste is hard to take.

Gouache can be reactivated with a spray of water, just wait ten minutes for this to sink in. Acrylics can be kept on a stay wet palette, put in the fridge and they'll be fine for ages. There are youtube videos about making your own stay wet palettes.

Good information. Never used gouache before accept white to touch up watercolor highlights. I want to give it a try now. I also heard you can use colored pencils and pastels over gouache when it’s dry with great results. I’m gonna have to give it a try! Thanks for a very informative video!

If you wet your colors about an hour before they’ll be good as new I do that plus I store mine in a medicine organizer and spray my paints with a little water everyday 4 months later their still like fresh outta the tube and if I miss a day or 2 forgetting to spray I just spray them when I remember and their still good to go the medicine organizer keeps the moisture sealed in good, I also see people use little round containers with lids and I’m sure those work great too I just like to carry my paint around so it’s nice to have them all in one place...

I mixed a dollop of natural honey to my gouache and let it dry in my palette. To activate it I add water and mix it up and let it sit for about 1 minute. It becomes thick and creamy almost like acrylic paint coverage and it glide's smoothly

This was excellent! I am 73 and have never painted in my like till 2 weeks ago and tried watercolor....that was rough haha. I know I know practice practice! Yesterday I saw a vid by by Ellen Trent Crimini called 'Gouache 101'. I got so excited and thought yes! So today I went to Michaels and got a little starter set so I'm going to set the watercolors aside for a bit (and also in the meantime try watercolor pencils also with a water brush). I've been watching truckloads of vids just learning stuff. A Question: How well and often does one rinse out brushes in between colors? You said you were going to have to scrub your palette when done and so does that mean it's harder to get the brush cleared of paint during a session? I thank you so much and I love your channel. Tfs

I'm almost 70 and without any previous art in my life (except color books) I began watching videos over a year ago & started to buy up all the good watercolor deals I could find... for about 6 months I've attempted watercolor... hits & misses. Have a great adventure with your watercolor journey and enjoy. God bless you!

She scrubbed her palette because re-using gouache that is dry is not advised, unlike watercolor which can be easily reconstituted. You don't get the same viscosity or color intensity as fresh gouache paint. I scrape my porcelain palette off with a palette knife then wipe clean with a wet rag so no pigment gets in our water. Re-using acrylic gouache that has dried is impossible, scrape it off. I hope you enjoy gouache as much as I do!

Help! I just tried gouache this am (arteza) for the first time, trying to do the yellow background one with the purple flower. Idk what I am doing wrong but I am using 140lb fabriano cold press and there's alot lf drag and coverage appears off. Do i just need to use more paint or layer up the background?

Pretty, but I guess I don’t get the point in using Gouache. Why not just use acrylics? Thank you for sharing about it and your paintings did turn out vibrant and pretty.
@muskndusk

Normal gouache can be reactivated, it doesn't permanently set like acrylics unless you use the hybrid acryla-gouache. It was originally used by designers who needed to photograph their work, so they liked the non-reflective matt velvety surface of gouache; whereas acrylic usually reflects light.

Dorland Wax is supposed to act as a good fixative, but I've also heard you can use pastel fixative, though I'm surprised the latter doesn't reactivate the gouache.

What nobody tells you is in Acrylic paint there is the addition of plastic. Think acrylic nails. So you must wash brushes after use in hot water. Keep during use in water. All these groups of colour are water colour. Just have different additives. Pronounced Goo ash French for watercolour. It’s unblendable and Matt when dry. Not good for natural subjects. Ps hold your brush correctly. It’s important for control.
